good points when topic is related to foreign policy.

but when it came to domestic politics, they couldn't rise above their ideological leanings, of course PB mehta won't, dhume's wife won't.

case in point, when question on CAA came, all of them refrained themselves from clarifying what CAA is i.e CAA gives fast track citizenship to minorities of three islamic countries and does not deprive any Indian citizen of their citizenship. meaning they would rather allow issues to simmer rather than let the truth come out.

another of those cases of attempts to manufacture a new stick to beat India with, in continuation of indications that is popping up these days, that western think tanks have an issue with Modi emphasising Bharat as civilisational state. i suppose we are going to see more of this in coming years.

thankfully another of those rare occasions where non-mainstream ex-foreign service officers defends GoI's positioning (not the civilisational part). but retired foreign service officers need to ponder on the fact that, if western think tanks are getting jittery about this civilisational aspect, there must be some India advantage they see in it which they don't like.

pragmatic view on state of affairs by the ambassador.

brown coolies tried to corner him in Q&A, but he asked the right counter questions for them to ponder on, answers to which are beyond their pay grade, only murican establishment and pentagon can answer those.

The Trajectory of India-Russia Ties Amid the War in Ukraine

A Conversation with Ambassador Pankaj Saran For decades,

India and Russia have enjoyed positive bilateral relations, strong arms trade and expanding diplomatic cooperation across a wide breadth of issues. However, Russia’s war in Ukraine has exposed challenges in its defense production sector and alienated Moscow from the broader international community, posing challenges to its relationship with New Delhi. And as the United States and India seek to expand their relationship across the defense, diplomatic and political spheres, New Delhi’s commitments to Moscow have become more closely scrutinized since Russia’s full-scale invasion two years ago.

Join USIP for a conversation with Pankaj Saran, India’s former deputy national security advisor and former ambassador to Russia, that will examine the strengths and challenges of the India-Russia relationship two years into Russia’s war in Ukraine and the implications for the trajectory of U.S.-India relations.

pretty sure, murican fandom on SM in India will cut clips and showcase as if garcetti is saying nice things about India.
the audience he is talking to are kids, as far as policy space is concerned it is as good as talking to an empty room.

Both sides discussing the behind the scenes events of the nuclear deal. The generation of American politicians and bureaucrats presented here won't come again as far as attitudes and optimism towards India is concerned. Along with a President like Bush who was determined to push things through with improving ties with India. Unfortunately we had congress at the helm which could neither take economic nor technological advantage of a once in a generation pro India environment in the US despite the deal. Also quite revealing that the American side asked "and what was Sonia Gandhi's opinion of the deal?".

the usual suspects, the fact that this lot is still able to get away for years without participating in proper debate on their opinions which have inbuilt deniability, that are essentially dog whistling in favour of extermination of native culture and religion of India, is a travesty on "intellectualism".

Typical Western homo-theoreticus - ".....but but but we are the good guys here, muh rules-based-liberal-world-order; we are ONLY giving free reign to Khalikhopdis to consolidate and train for their non-existent secessionist movement in the Americas because we care for free speech, and totally not because we have a history of overthrowing governments........also, we are only trying to train OGWs in India to help the children; think of the children...also maybe a little bit of FuckinAroundWithIndia'sStrategicEnergyRequirementsAndCauseGeneralDisharmony but trust us you goofballs, murican-desi bhai bhai..."

This one is an oddity by washington DC think tank conversation standards, washington think tanks almost never allow india's point of view be articulated so plainly, but it has happened here, perhaps this has more to do the sponsor of this event rather than change of policy wonks hearts in DC.

it is true, practitioners are ahead of policy wonks, in the current stage of Indo-U.S relationship.

india focussed policy wonks seem to be scared to come out as atheists in their world dominated by religion called liberalism(inspired from samir saran's recent quote), which is why current Indian govt pov is not articulated clearly in DC policy circles.

no, there are few right/centrist wing think tanks which allow pro india discussions.

libbies care more about their ideology than sponsorship (for ex brookings).

Was in my notifications . Checked out the duration. It's 3 hours. 3 hours of brain assailing discussions can have serious repercussions on your mental health.

It's like over indulgence in biriyani. We love it. Let's not overdose on it.

Seems gora sahib is a big fan of pappu and has taken notes from pappu for this low level opinion piece.

"As of now, the BJP is positioned to maintain power after the 2024 election, making it unlikely to impact the trajectory of the relationship barring an unforeseen anti-American faction gaining footing. Should the party expand its hold over Parliament, the surface of the relationship may remain the same, but centralizing Modi’s power would only exacerbate his authoritarian and hawkish leanings.

Still, India’s growing illiberalism shouldn’t be a barrier for the moment. The United States has a long history of working with dictatorships that have questionable human rights records. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pinochet-controlled Chile immediately come to mind. Security interests frequently trump moral qualms."

"security interests trump moral qualms" As if the US had deep misgivings about Saudi, Turkey and Chile. Or for that matter Pakistan for so much of its history, including 1971. Let's not forget Portugal under Salazaar, and whom the US and West sided with in 1961.

They weren't grappling with their conscience, not the people in power in the US anyway. They actually preferred dictators, military regimes, repressive monarchies, they are easier to handle and understand, than chaotic, pluralistic democracies.
