We can do a sample return, but not by ourselves


Since Lupex is even now in Conceptual stage, if only we could do a feasibility study of sample return with Jap collaboration


@Vamsi would I be right in saying that

We should abandon this sample return mission.Lunar soil has been extensively studied and there is very little to discover.Rather they should plan for a manned landing mission.

Also they have given a timeline of 10 years which is just too long.By the time our lander would arrive to collect samples,some rich individuals would be celebrating their honeymoon in the moon.

It's a technology demonstrator

Getting a piece of equipment on the moon, and getting it back safely back, it has implications in future manned missions
This is the route that China took and Americans before them

It is not explicitly for mineral analysis of the regolith, which is an additional benefit imo, if we can return enough of it we can donate it to various universities and schools across India

Correct. Or we can go the (easier) Japanese route of collecting from asteroids. Either way we need some samples to analyse for ourselves.

A bit overdone. Nehru's contribution to many things was immense, ISRO among them. Dismissing it is pointless just as all credit being given to him is stupidity. Some nuance is necessary.
As far as space, defense programs or R&D is concerned, Nehru's contribution to ISRO as much as Mao's contribution to China. Both only get Credits for first leaders otherwise nearly destroyed these entities.

ISRO's present form is a result of UR Rao & Narsimha Rao's era in early 90s. It isn't even remotely related to Nehru.

We can do sample return even on our own with vikas engine powered LVM-3 itself, but we have to use 2 LVM-3's instead of one....if LVM-3SC becomes available then we can do it with single LV....but our samples will smaller when compared to that of Chinese which bought 1kg back to earth

We can do Mars Sample return with 2 LVM-3SCs

Primary aim of Unmanned sample return mission will be to demonstrate lunar orbit docking & sample transfer....which are key for future manned moon mission, hence sample return mission is must

Like Pokhran II, of course merit goes to ABV also, but Rao is often unduly not given credit for Pokran II.

What exactly isp and powerful rocket u want to have india?
Isp is specific impulse, in simple terms it is exhaust velocity of the engine exhaust....more Isp means, more exhaust velocity, more exhaust velocity means, less fuel to burn for same amount of thrust .....so engine with higher ISP is efficient, if engine is efficient then more payload can be carried

For eg our CE-20's Isp is 443sec while S200 boosters Isp is 237sec ....hence CE-20 operates 10 mins & gives half of the orbital velocity required, while S200 burns less than 3mins

We should follow Japs way to bring samples from Saturn's moon Encelaudus, the orbiter can directly go into Encelaudus' plume & collect it samples, it will be a very unique mission if we do it.....there is a possibility of those plume samples having evidence of microbial life

I predicted many years ago that all the nuclear powers would be future space powers.
