It is designed to target both missiles and shells, Iron dome is a part of Air/Missile defense of Israel..

70-80% of casualty is caused by arty fire on both sides, Kargil was also the war of dual of arty guns..

I said it cannot target batteries, i.e. artilliery guns or missile launchers. It is only a defensive weapon, not an offensive one. Offensive options such as Rudra and LCH will be far more effective in such situations.

OTO Melara Draco

OTO Melara 76 mm naval multipurpose gun ( Same on P-17 & P-28 class ships ) on a vehicle. This new concept offers direct and indirect fire support, air defense with guided projectile (Strales) and unguided rounds (proximity fuse), CRAM with guided projectile (Strales) and unguided rounds (proximity fuse).

It is a remotely-operated turret, armed with a 76-mm rapid firing naval gun. The gun is completed with an automatic revolver-type ammunition loading system. It can use all standard 76-mm ammunition, guided DART ammunition, C-Ram and top-attack ammunition. Rate of fire is 80-100 rounds per minute. Ammunition revolver contains 12 indexed rounds and can shift from one type of ammunition to another. Twenty four additional rounds are stored in the automatic magazine, located in the hull. Modern SPAAGs are usually fitted with 20-40 mm guns. Such a powerful gun was selected because of it's long range. Maximum range of fire is 6-8 km. Such range is similar of the current hybrid gun-missile air defense systems. The Draco can engage helicopters before they release their anti-tank guided weapons.

The Draco SPAAG is intended to engage air targets, such as helicopters, aircraft, UAV and air-launched weapons. Also it can be used against ground targets. This air defense weapon can be used for combat support operations, convoy's defense or point defense. Also it can be used for coastal defense. Maximum firing range against naval targets is 20 km.

India Presses Israel on Joint Missile Project

India Presses Israel on Joint Missile Project | Defense News | defensenews.com
NEW DELHI — The Indian government has asked Israel to speed up development of its joint medium-range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) project, which has faced technical snags since its inception in 2009.

MRSAM topped the agenda when Air Chief Marshal N.K. Browne, commander of the Indian Air Force, visited Israel last week, Ministry of Defence sources said here.

During his Jan. 21-23 visit, Browne was scheduled to meet with Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak; Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, chief of the General Staff; Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel, commander of the Israeli Air Force; and Rear Adm. Ophir Shohaim, director of the Directorate for Defense Research and Development.

Browne also discussed with the Israelis air-to-air missiles and precision-guided munitions that India might want to acquire.

The MRSAM, a joint weapon development project being undertaken by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), along with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), seeks to deliver at least 18 firing units along with related systems at a cost of more than $2 billion. Each firing unit has 16 missiles. India also hopes the system can be used by the Indian Army, but that remains unclear, the sources said.

The MRSAM prototype failed its first test, held late last year, Defence Ministry sources said, but they provided no details. Development is being carried out under secrecy here.

MRSAM is intended to intercept enemy missiles at a range of 70 kilometers. It carries an active radar seeker and a bidirectional data link for midcourse guidance and kill assessment, an Indian Air Force official said. It will also be equipped with an advanced rotating phased array radar to provide a high-quality air situation picture.

The Indian Army also has a requirement for an unspecified number of MRSAMs to move with mechanized forces and provide organic mobile air defense protection. The Army requirement of MRSAM is also worth more than $2 billion.

Defence Ministry sources said that in addition to discussions on MRSAM, Browne reviewed information from the Israelis on air-to-air missiles and precision-guided munitions that India could acquire.

The Air Force already has purchased 18 Spyder surface-to-air missile systems from Israeli company Rafael to protect high-value assets following the failure of India's homegrown Quick Reaction System, the Trishul, after nearly 15 years of development.

Last year, the Air Force bought the Israeli Derby medium-range active radar seeker air-to-air missile, made by Rafael, to be mounted on the homemade Light Combat Aircraft, which the DRDO is developing. Earlier, the Air Force had purchased Israeli Python-5 air-to-air missile systems.

Israel also has helped Indian scientists develop the homemade Prithvi air defense ballistic missile system. Though no formal agreement has been signed, DRDO and Israel are developing India's land attack missile project, including a land attack cruise missile.

India, France sign $6 bn deal on Surface to Air Missile

After a comprehensive talks, the leaders said views were exchanged on a number of bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of common interest including defence ties, civil nuclear cooperation, counter-terrorism and situation in Mali.

Observing that India is Hollande's first Asian destination for a bilateral trip, Singh said this demonstrates the importance of this relationship between the two countries.

"President Hollande and I exchanged views on a number of bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of common interest. We reviewed progress on the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project and reiterated our commitment to its early implementation as soon as the commercial and technical negotiations, which have made good progress, are completed," Singh said at a joint press event after the talks.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress in defence cooperation, Singh said, "Discussions on the MMRCA contract are progressing well. We have also concluded negotiations on the Short Range Surface to Air Missile, which, once approved by the Government, will be co-developed and co-produced in India," while noting that the defence ties were poised to reach a qualitatively new level.

The Rs 30,000 crore worth of SR-SAM project is a co- development joint venture between India and France and would be developed by MBDA of France and DRDO from the Indian side. The surface to air missile defence system would be deployed by the IAF and the Navy.

Hollande, also accompanied by a large contingent of French business leaders, including Dassault chief executive Eric Trappier, whose company is hoping to seal the deal to sell 126 Rafale warplanes to India in the world's biggest defence contract currently under negotiation.

On his part, Hollande said he has come to take the Indo-French strategic partnership to "yet another level" while noting that the defence cooperation reflects India's trust for French technology and France's trust for use of technology by India. "India is a country of peace", the French President added.

The two sides also inked four pacts, including one in the field of railways

No idea why not go with Spyder itself.
This was for VSHORAD, not SHORAD = two different class of missiles. If India wants SHORAD they would go with VL MICA development.

A Concrete layer of IADS which consist of the following :-

1). VSHORAD :- ie hand held n optionally remotely guided MANPADS like IGLA-S, Mistral etc,

2). SR-SAMs N QR-SAMS:- RAFAEL SPYDER, MBDA MAITRI etc....

3). MR-SAMS:- such as BUK-Ms, RAFAEL SPYDER MR etc.....even sovet era SA-6 Gainful packs a lot of punch.......

4). Long Range SAMS :- AKASH, S-300PMUs, Land version of Barak-8 called LR-SAM we r co-developing with Israelis etc.......

5). And Last but not the least anti Ballistic SAMS :- S-300VMs, S-400, PADS, AADS etc..... Arrow 2 of Israel does not get mentioned b'cause U.S. prohibits to sell it to us Indians Sighting MCTR rules n regulations.........

What about Radars to plug holes in the airspace?
There was some sort of Air-defense radar competition to procure some advance radars from Italy, France n Israel participating in don't know the status abt it now....However BEL, DRDO n i guess BHEL made AD radars r currently actively present in inventory....

Do we have a seperate RADAR thread on DFI..........

My View : Based on Present

1). VSHORAD :- IGLA & SA-13

2). SR-SAMs : OSA-AK

3). MR-SAMS : Akash & SA-6

4). Long Range SAM : Indian BMD`S Inter-Atmosphere Interceptor
