Army has been given a hall pass for individual cases. Not a complete blanket ban. Thus there will be no field or 'hard' postings for women.

The court noted that such a restriction was not imposed when the JAG and AEC branches were opened up for grant of permanent commission.

It then observed that an absolute bar on women seeking criteria or command appointments would violate Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before law. The Army, it said, had also failed to provide a justification for the restriction.

The court, therefore, ruled that whether a particular candidate should or should not be granted a criteria or command assignment “is a matter for the competent authority to consider having regard to all the exigencies of service, performance and organisational requirements”.

It, however, added that if the Army does have convincing reasons for excluding women from a particular criteria or command appointment, “it may provide them to the relevant authorities and, if necessary, to future courts”.

Now here is the problem. Male units who get easy postings for R&R will have to spend more time at the field.

“The Army, which is heavily deployed along the borders and in counter-insurgency operations, has a limited number of ‘sheltered’ or peace station postings. With more women PC officers occupying such positions, hard or field postings for male officers will be more prolonged,” another officer said.

The judgement entails non combat roles only for PC. What is noteworthy is that there is no blanket ban on command posts. These promotions begin at Colonel and determine whether you join the ranks of Generals or retire after 20 years of service with pension benefits. About 30% of officers receive these postings. So you might have some tussle with peace postings after this judgement.

Army might try to siphon most of the 600 eligible women to Cyber, Languages and Space Commands.

Anything where you are not actively looking for people to kill with your own two hands, by implements or by a vehicle of war wherein you are exposed to the elements and mortal danger within the area of operations is NOT a combat posting.

Thus those women are engaged in simple policing duties. When SHTF, these women are called back to safe zones away from enemy fire.

The Army Act 1950 requires an Official Gazette notification for this to even be allowed.

Ineligibility of females for enrolment or employment. No female shall be eligible for enrolment or employment in the regular Army, except in such corps, department, branch or other body forming part of, or attached to any portion of, the regular Army as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify in this behalf: Provided that nothing contained in this section shall affect the provisions of any law for the time being in force providing for the raising and maintenance of any service auxiliary to the regular Army, or any branch thereof in which females are eligible for enrolment or employment.

This combined with an earlier decision limiting interference by SC in policy decisions by the Army will prevent this unless the government explicitly allows for this.

In an ideal world, maybe. But not present day India. The Media is so throughly penetrated that you will have Anchors running prime time about how Indian Army FORCED these units knowing BAT was in place. First saying why we don't get intelligence then saying intelligence was known but was hidden on purpose.
It's not the dedication of women I doubt but the Spin Doctors who I believe are well oiled machine at this.

Well, govt should insist on equal opportunity and insist man = woman, i.e, no special treatment for anyone.
Have a all women regiment and send them off to the valley on the border.

If few get killed, blame on Jihadis for killing women.
If some inside crib, insist on man = woman and stand firm on women's rights to kill/be killed.

Firstly, there will be NO induction of women in combat - Infantry, Armour or artillery units.

Secondly, command only in non combat units.

Thirdly, cannot command brigades and above due to no experience in combat roles.

Fourthly, can be promoted to the ranks of Brigadiers. Maj generals and Lt generals but only within their corps.
