NSG pulls out 900 commandos from VIP security for anti-terror
NEW DELHI: For the first time in two decades, the elite National Security Guard(NSG) has pulled out its commandos--numbering around 900--from guarding high risk VIPs, scaling down its security duties.

The NSG, according to sources, is now guarding the least number of protectees-- 15 VVIPs/VIPs--after a long time following the de-induction of a large number of commandos and redeploying them for operations for which they were meant for.

The commando force has shifted around 900 of its commandos rendering VIP security duties for training in specialist counter-terror operations as part of its original charter, an official said today. It has de-inducted these 'black cats' from one of its three VIP security units - the '11 Special Rangers Group (SRG)' - from its existing duties, the official said. NSG commandos were deployed for VIP security duties in 1992.

It was raised under an Act of the Parliament in 1984 as a federal contingency force. The formations of the NSG are segregated into five units, two Special Action Groups (SAGs) manned by officers and jawans from the Army and three SRGs comprising personnel from para-military forces.

Re: Indian Counter Terror Operations Pictures

Wow, NSG got some really usefull equipment. And I thought that the NSG modernization programm got stuck in bureaucracy, scams and co.
That's the opinion one gets from tabloid news reports. It is really hard to differentiate BS from real concerns (and since the media cry wolf all the time, it's even harder to know when they actually print the truth).

I remember seeing a few reports of how they claim NSG "lost" to the terrorists because the terrorists had MP5s and NSG had AK-47. Then they uploaded a pic of an NSG commando with an MP-5, and a pic of Kasab with the T-56 rifle. :pound:

But the pictures speak for themselves: NSG in 2012 isnt NSG from 2008

The thing should be concerning, till date i have seen NSG only with MP-5, they have better optics than anyone even SPG but there firearms are mainly consist of MP-5 sub-machine guns, Now they are purchasing SIG-551 short barrel rifles which is better than MP-5..

But are they in good quantities ?

From NDTV about recent weapons purchases by the Central Police Forces (But Sigs have ´been in NSG service even before 26/11)

"The inventory of the assault weapons procured for security forces, including ITBP, CISF and Assam Rifles, during 2010-2013 show that while 29,260 pieces of the 'AK' series were procured, only 17,609 units of other weapons in this category like X-95 and SIG were imported."

"So while the CRPF got 6,382 pieces of X-95 for its troops in Maoist operations, the elite National Security Guard (NSG) got 675 pieces of the Swiss-make SIG assault rifles."

NSG has procured around 500 SIG 551 rifles.
BTW wouldn't the G 36 series be be better instead - more compact and lighter?

SIGs too are compact and short too just as G36s are.Plus sigs had a reputation as a weapon having kalashnikov grade reliability among the whole 5.56 famiily. plus price could also be an factor to strike out G36.Any way not sure about the later thing.

Finally an Indian SF command on its way ! :thumb:
Soon, commandos to come under single command

A plan is afoot to integrate commandoes of the army, navy, air force and the National Security Guard (NSG) under a single command.
"The planning has been going on for the last three and a half years or so. It will result in a single commando force for special and incisive operations. As many as 15,000 well-trained men with sophisticated weapons, who are supported by sound logistics, will come under a single command," said an official familiar with the developments.

The plan has received a fillip after being recommended by the Naresh Chandra Committee, a 14-member task force on national security, which submitted its report to the government in August.

"A combined force for operating in absolutely covert conditions is long overdue. Most countries, except India, have such forces," said retired Lt Gen PC Katoch, who commanded special forces in Sri Lanka.

Understandably, this force will operate both within India and abroad.

At present, the Indian Army has about five battalions of para commandoes with another three in the pipeline, the navy has two marine commando battalions— popularly known as Marcos — while the air force has the Garuds numbering about 1,500 commandoes. The elite NSG has five battalions for special operations, excluding substantial numbers of fighters who take care of VIP security.

The commandoes to be commanded by a Lt General of the army will have capabilities and skills to battle it out on land, air and sea and will have the facilities to reach anywhere within the shortest possible time.

Incidentally, last Friday, PM Manmohan Singh had indicated his intent when he called for synergy among the armed forces for 'comprehensive responses'.

"We should aim to abandon single service or segmented approaches and develop synergies across services. Compartmentalised views will only delay our response," the PM had said addressing top commanders

Re: IAF Mi 17 V5 documentary

Indian Army TAR-21 use MARS Reflex Sight :

ITL MARS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

----------------------
----------------------

CRPF, Garuda & Marcos use MEPRO MOR reflex sight :

Military Optics - Electro-optical, optical sights and devices
But Kunal do you know what's really interesting/confusing- the IA SF ALSO use the MEPRO MOR sights (albeit for their M4s):

And I why wonder why it is the PARA (SF) went for MARS but every other operartor in India of the Tavor family (CRPF,GARUDS,MARCOs etc) went for the MEPRO MOR sights?

True, I think the older batches of TAR-21 were with MARS sight now Mepro is in demand..
