Absolutely and in my opinion, this is a huge problem for the Indian Army, and then the propensity of the commissioned officers to take charge literally from the front on each and every occasion further aggravates the situation........ I mean these folks give a new meaning to the phrase 'lead from the front'!! While many consider this 'trait' to be virtuous and what not and leave no occasion to glorify such incidents, in my opinion, it's reckless and stupid waste of an extremely valuable or perhaps even irreplaceable human resource i.e the officer.

I think the leadership and command ability of our NCOs are needed to be brought up asap and this is one area where the IA can draw some lessons from the US armed forces.

PS - I think an RR unit could have done the job, albeit with a bigger force.
Absolutely agree ! Valid point.

So what's the training for SOF snipers? Just shooting a lot more than regular infantry snipers or some extra training?

Also, wouldn't developing a comprehensive sniper course plug a HUGE hole in COIN ops in Kashmir?

As for your point on education, that's true. Coriolis effect is not anyone's cup of tea, much less a farmer's son from the village but I have noticed that a lot (seriously LOTS) of airmen happen to have graduation degrees with em nowadays...
Fingers crossed.
I may be wrong but I remember reading somewhere that SF snipers are sent to US and EU countries from specialized training.

thtswht it is for now....... ......
A great book to read about Sniper Training and Utilization is the The Red Circle by Brandon Webb. (available on Kindle) - You will get a sense of the Delta in our capability.

Havnt heard. Maybe just a cross training ex.

because the quality of education is low in rural india.IQ levels r not of that level.basic education is there but advanced not.
I have always maintained (with no proof ofcourse) - is the expansion of the SF lead to degradation in capability because of the above reason. SF the world over share one key trait. They IQs tend to be near the Genius level (Pentagon study in the late 90s - Will try and find that paper again)

now imagine the result if regular infantry were deployed to take out that terrorists that's why our generals prefer to use special forces as super infantry.
Sorry but that doesnt compute. SOF units dont train to go up against SOF units. Regular infantry and Specially Ghatak Units SHOULD be training to do just that. If a General has to rely on SOF every time he fears a better trained opfor then our system is failing somewhere. Infantry should have the advantage of numbers and superior firepower and the ability to fire and manouver at will. which will put a cornered "SOF" at a disadvantage.

It cannot be that everytime an Indian Army unit is roling through an urban center (in a war senario) - SF has to come and clear the path first. That is the tasking of Ghatak, Sniper/Scout units, Pathfinders. SF/LRRP job is to sneak in and provide advance intel and overwatch to the rolling infantry.

In recent years almost all ops done by SF in Kashmir could/should be the domain of Ghatak.

They do, when retrofitted with some sort of foliage penetration radar.
A DPR will not fit on a micro UAV. And DPRs on larger MALE drones have also been found to be wanting. the Americans have been using them in Central America for a while with a big mixed bag of success.

Training is basic.Best marksmen of a battalion are sent for the course.

The school is a sub branch of the Infantry school Mhow and not a independent school in itself.

No advanced training on the use of technology is provided.

This youtuber tested the Indian Army helmet , wonder why he put the flag at the back where he is trying to shoot. Should have avoided that.

Russian SOF in 2010 (during INDRA exercise) and in 2019-20 : The Russians have made a remarkable improvement in their SOF equipment over the years, even though the regular infantry modernization has somewhat stagnated.

In our case, reverse is true - the regulars are improving at a brisk pace but SOF has largely stagnated over last decade or so.

Dont insult them Russians by comoaring them to us. Have you watched their shooting drills which are different than americans and the west but still effective..

Which shooting drills does our SF have?

The only thing Russians lacked was equipment.. once it was procured they went boom boom. We dont have the training also in many departments.

Imagine this.. Russians hate the west and still procured equipment like the west... whats stopping us?

Our SF dudes are having weird trainings...most i say again most infantry troops dont have proper grip to fire a pistol.

SFs shooting drils are slow like they have all the time in the world. Advanced shooting techniques dont exist.

Sniper schools are not there.Instead of sending only Para jawans for NSG to retain skills in the para unit...infantry guys are also sent which is of no use as all the skill and training is lost towards the end.

I dont even understand the setup of Indian SF.

As per my understanding of Indian school of thought there is no concept of specialist. You may find such mindset in PSU also,a staff is rotated across dept. The so called rationale behind it is that you don't become dependent non the staff while allowing the person to grow. May not be a perfect analogy but I find some similarities in defence forces. NSG should have been a specialist forces but you find members being rotated. Some would argue dissemination of experience across the force.

Show downed aircraft or it never happened.
Don’t hide behind army .
IAF is already incompetent enough , they don’t need more apologists like you.

Also insulting me is OK . I don’t mind it on forums . But don’t go above that else you will be sorry for doing that.
I used to think you are a sane and rational guy until I read this masterpiece from you... do enlighten us on how "we" can show you an aircraft which went down well within enemy territory..

and " it never happened" ... so its your word over the IAF? Isnt that a tough one !

Take it easy bro. He was abusing me that time.
Also if you don’t have visual proof of downed jet, it is designated as unconfirmed kill.
It’s an unofficial rule. Otherwise you have paki fizayya killing Su30 like mosquito and their ruhani pilot shooting dozens of enemies jets within fraction of seconds as if all were nicely lined in the air for that marde momin to get shot

Don’t mean to butt in to your conversation, but was interested in what you said earlier.

“Also insulting me is OK . I don’t mind it on forums . But don’t go above that else you will be sorry for doing that.”

How would you make him sorry for doing that? Just curious, as usually people say these things and makes one wonder why they say it, can they really follow through....
