i am sure, IL-76 is more than capable of doing the same job.
Strategic lifter? remember MoD have cleared this planes (c-130) for Special force deployment in short notice, plus IL- 76 might not be available in short notice, IL-76 is more a strategic lifter while C-130 a tactical lifter, those C-130 would be every ready for the Special Forces to operate.

I remember the thread where Armand talked about how the French could take AnN in no time. I guess the powers to be read that thread and decided to make AnN the drop point. They checked how fast they could get our boys in if such a contingency came about. :D :D

kunal bhai,

can IL-76 achieve the same objectives?

i do not think An-32 can :(
Maybe this is the reason, why this C-130s are being brought, i.e. rapid deployment of Special force.

IL-76 for strategic airlift untill C-17 arives..

IL-76 have more capacity as well as range so does more speed than C-130J..

But the C-130J are not meant for Strategic lift, we got are SOF C-130J for SF mainly..

The thing is why use C-130J for such a long trip where IL-76 can do it in short time with more payload..

The comparison of IL-76 and C-130J are not relevant. The comparison should be between Il-76 and C-17, which are much bigger than the C-130J.
IAF does not really have anything similar to the C-130J (Medium air-lifter) - the An-32 is the closest we have as a medium air-lifter, but it is smaller with less range, speed and capacity.

The C-130J cannot deliver as much payload as a Il-76 or a C-17, but can definitely land in places where the other two cannot.

C-17 and C-130J need same runway where IL-76 need lot longer runway..

Broadsword: IAF practices a long range Special Forces deployment to Andamans
.
.

On Monday, 12 December 2011, IAF simulated a piracy contingency at Campbell Bay in Nicobar Islands (the furthermost Island territory of India) based on an intelligence input that an Indian merchant ship had been hijacked with hostages. The mission simulated launching of a Para Special Forces team into the objective area using C-130J as airborne platform.
Planning revealed that the objective was about
3500 Nautical Miles away. The route was via Kolkata and Port Blair to the simulated Drop Zone over Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar Islands. The
round trip would require a staggering 12 hours of flying time.
The ground crew prepared the aircraft in the early hours of the Monday morning while the air crew finished pre flight briefing procedures. After the
walk around at 0430 hours, the four mighty
engines roared to life. The aircraft took off at 0500 hrs and the crew commenced the 3500 Nautical Miles trip. Despite encountering inclement weather over the Bay of Bengal, the crew flew C-130J to Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar Islands and achieved the planned objective. The aircraft returned to Air Force Station Hindon after a non-stop mission of 12 hours 03 minutes without refueling enroute. The simulated launch of long range special operation mission was successfully accomplished.
Nice job done.. but going slightly off topic, I think it is time we change the colonial times' names especially looking at the world status we have today. Such names make us look petty post-colonial remnants like Seychelles and Caribbean. We are a world power and we need to have our own names.

Always have separate aircrafts for different roles. Iam glad IAF conducting an exercises like these, or else buying those aircraft would have been useless.
We did learn few things from Kandahar Hostage and 26/11 Mumbai Incidents. If Special Forces had separate wing rather relying on IAF for transport they would had reached in time.

IAF brought IL-76s for Heavy transport roles. They may can also be used for SF operations, but wont be effective. IL-76 need a huge runaway and most of IL-76s fleet stationed in Agra undergoing Transport roles, transferring and readying a Il-76s would waist a lot of time.

Besides, C-130Js are designed to even land on sabotage airfields - Thats their specialty!!

But why do we need 15 C-130 when 6 Aircrafts are enough?. For Medium lift we already have Hundreds of An-32s in our fleet
Even i dont understand, What the big difference can a C-130J design for SF can it be from a normal C-130J/IL-76s. What so unique modifications can be done over C-130s for SF operation?
