NSG functioning without top commander for six months!!!

New Delhi: The country's elite counter-terrorist force NSG is functioning without its top operations commander for almost six months as both the Home and Defence ministries have not been able to get a suitable Army officer for the job.
The last incumbent of the post - Inspector General (Operations) Major General RS Pradhan was repatriated from the elite commando force on July 12 last year even before he completed his stipulated three-year tenure.
Pradhan had joined the 'black cats' on June 21, 2010 on deputation from the Army.

Sources in the Home Ministry said that at a time when the NSG has spread its security web by deploying its crack commandos in various important cities across the country, the absence of the top commander can turn out to be a costly affair for the force in the possible event of a terrorist attack or an hijack attempt.
"The Home Ministry has twice drawn the list for appointing an eligible Major General rank officer in consultation with the Ministry of Defence but they have still not been able to find a suitable officer for the crucial post. The NSG's fighting forces are under the command of the IG (operations) and the officer is next in command to the NSG DG in terms of operations," a top source said.
According to sources, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had some time back approved the name of a senior Army Major General but the posting has still not taken place. The Ministry of Defence, according to sources, is still to give its nod on the selection.

If the Marcos did things like the SEAL, then would it be worthwhile.

But then, yes, there has to be a political will to employ them so!

A Soldier's Wish : NSG commando paralysed in 26/11 ops, wants to see Oberoi again

A Soldier's Wish

Paralysed because of the Oberoi rescue operation of 26/11, he wants to see the hotel again

When the 26/11 attacks were happening in Mumbai, PV Manesh was one of the NSG commandos airdropped into the Trident Oberoi. He spent 24 hours inside, battling terrorists until a grenade fell near him. Now paralysed along his right side, he harbours a wish: to see the hotel again.

Manesh says he wants to do it because he is not able to recollect anything about the hotel. It was dark when he entered and he was unconscious when being taken out. He had dropped, as he remembers, into 'a pool of blood' on the terrace. He recalls the room-by-room search that began from the top floor. On the 22nd floor, he almost came face to face with one of the terrorists and shot him down. Within minutes, Manesh too was hit—by the grenade. "We rescued 42 inmates trapped inside their rooms. Many of them were foreigners .When we broke open the doors, we saw inmates huddled in corners with terrified faces," he says.

After the grenade went off, shrapnel fell on his head. He had his helmet on, but it went right through it. "I woke up four days later, only to realise that the right side of my body was paralysed," he says. He was in a Kolkata hospital for one year after that. He slowly regained mobility, aided by Ayurvedic treatment. Two pieces of sharpnel have been removed, but one still remains lodged inside. "It is in the left side, on the back of my head. Doctors said it would be risky if we try to remove it," he says. He can walk now, though his right arm and fingers still remain motionless. Manesh is now posted at the 122 TA Battalion in his home town Kannur in Kerala.

He now wants to jog his memory of 26/11. "I saw the video of the commando operation on the internet after months. On that occasion, I hardly noticed anything other than the movements of terrorists inside," he says.

Manesh had made a couple of personal visits to Mumbai before 26/11, but never saw the Oberoi Trident then. "I want to go to Mumbai again to see the Oberoi. Not in the uniform of a commando, but with my wife and child," he says.

Dude this is Indian Air force Garuda SF , My 100 Rs !! I am never Wrong :cool2:
If you notice the guy in the left most in pic # 1 is the exact same guy in the middle in post # 6. He is now a Para commando.

I want to know the former unit (pic 1) from the insignia.

MP.net photos say they are garuds though I am not sure.

Are Garud commandos recruited from Paras ? Wiki says No. So how come a Garud commando become a Para ?

Garud airman wear the "Airman Beret Badge" on the cap. They are also parachute trained, and wear the Operational Paratroopers Brevet above the right pocket. The "Garud Force Patch" can be seen worn on the sleeve. The Garud Commando Badge, which was worn on the right pocket and resembles the NSG badge, is no longer in use. Instead they now have a Garud Winged Badge which is gold in colour and worn on the left chest, similar to where pilot/aircrew wings are worn.

The Garuds used to wear a black beret, instead of the traditional maroon beret of the other Indian Special Forces units, but now wear the maroon beret. They sport the operational paratroopers brevet on the right chest. The formation ensignia is worn on the left shoulder. The Garuds are also entitled to wear "IAF GARUD" titles on the sleeves.

All Jats look the same to non Jats! :)

Paratroopers are the only ones who can wear the maroon beret and that too when serving with a Para unit.

However, many still prefer to wear the maroon, even when not with the Paras and instead on Extra Regimental Employment, which is not correct.
