....why can't we have a specialty military occupation like the USMC Scout Sniper doctored and modified for Indian needs?

If anything, the current zeitgeist requires specialty sniper courses.
The way jihadis and paki snipers are fucking with us specially in the borders is just frustrating.

.......
That's just not the way Indian Army is structured. Within Infantry we do not have trades - all infantry men are the same by profession. There are 10 snipers or designated marksmen per battalion, 2 per rifle company and 2 in G platoon. But there is no sniper trade within infantry as such.

MoD aims to buy hi-tech sniper rifles for Army

The Ministry of Defence has launched a global hunt to procure an advanced sniper rifle with thermal imaging night sights and a strike range of 1,200 metres.

A request for information has been sent to international and Indian weapons manufacturers. The new rifle will replace the Indian Army's ailing Soviet-era Dragunov guns.

"As per the Army's field requirements, the MoD has decided to procure about 5,500 advanced sniper rifles with night sights. The procurement will be carried out in phases and the desired quantity must be delivered by the supplier within six to 18 months from the day of signing the contract," a senior official with the MoD told TOI over phone.

Army snipers have been using the obsolete Dragunov since it was first inducted in the Indian Army back in 1990. The weapon's ammunition has become expensive and there have been reliability, ability problems. "The 7.62 mm-calibre Dragunov has been suffering from several problems," a senior army officer with an infantry division, currently posted in the North-East sector, told TOI. Army higher-ups and the ministry know about the gun's problems but procurement has remained pending since 2012, due to various reasons."

Army sources said these rifles fail to "recognise" targets beyond 300 metres at night. Also, the shoulder-fired Dragunov does not possess adequate stability. Pakistani snipers, meanwhile, have been using advanced Austrian rifles against Indian troops along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, the sources said.

Every infantry battalion of the Indian Army has about eight to ten snipers. Commenting on the role of snipers, another senior officer, with extensive experience in the North-East and Jammu and Kashmir, said snipers are an invaluable part of operations. "Snipers are force multipliers. Their expertise often gives that desired advantage to operations," the officer said.

Along with Sniper doctrine, we should have DMR specialization in Infantry Sections. Every Section should have atleast 2 DMRs. Repurposed 7.62 Isapore SLR kept in storage should be modified with scopes for this use. Around 50,000 DMR can be inducted in one month at a minor cost of Rs. 100-200 crores.

Truthfully they want Barret or Accuracy International sniper rifle at a cost $20,000 a piece. Unmindful of costs they will set GSQR requirements such that anything less is unacceptable. They have done the same to Vidhwansak Anti Material Rifle, which has 2000 yards range with a bigger bullet. Army complains of its weight and that reasoning is flimsy for a two man sniper team. They want plastic made rifle with lower weight so that two soldiers carrying it are very comfortable.

Like it or not 1990s GSQR were written after a senior officers visit to an arms show and gave greater consideration to weight but less to durability.

This total consideration for this purchase including spares ammunition is close to $500 million. May be more.

Are Army generals pay taxes and then they would know, that these purchases would come out of their taxes too?

There is a general notion that Pak Army is employing snipers on LoC and we are not, or they are getting more kills than us. While I agree that PA has better sniping rifles than IA, we do not hear about PA casualities at all while we have concrete info on our own sniper ops.

See below for some evidence of our sniping work.

Shatrujeet latest expose clearly tells that AMRs are being employed on LC to fire through the loopholes:

Titbit from Surgical Strikes:

http://www.newsx.com/national/76627...ght-into-the-fear-psychosis-of-pakistans-army

Surrounding the target

The main aim of the strike party was right in front of the target, the snipers were deployed right in front where the sentry posts were. The main goal was to silence the sentry. The rocket launchers were deployed on both the sides of it. So if there was, anyone else at the post after one of them is silenced, say if another had been sleeping or tries to retaliate to destroy the post completely the teams had positioned rocket launchers as support beside the snipers.

Other than that, at the LP-OP posts, the enemy had HMG etc. to cover that too, Indian troops had dispatched multi-shot grenade launchers, and rocket launchers.

The Indian side had deployed three different teams. First was the sniper team, another for control and one of them was in our support weapon team. Support weapons and assault teams were similar; there wasn’t much difference but the snipers were kept separate at a height but everyone was in touch

We need to make local version of traking point for SLR

Once its made, put it on SLR, use modern rifle accessories on it.
Such automatic fire is very bad. Never should any army buy such a rifle. What if it fires on a wrong person? What if electronics fail due to temperature variations or battery failure?

Automatic sniper is for squad level.Army never going to buy it because it costs approximately 17k.
How does it fires on wrong person?
Never heard of extensive testing.

These electronic items can't withstand the heat, cold, sand and dirt of battlefields. Also, in battlefield, it is sometimes important to swim past rivers or lakes. A gun has to work even in such conditions.

You can do trials of them, and I am sure they will not pass any of the trials. They are just toys meant for amateurs. Even guns like SA80 was considered a failure due to its fragile body which bent and broke during combat conditions.

Reference these Twitter posts for example of this propaganda:

We need to counter this, as there is an impression being formed that our boys are sitting ducks and are being picked off at will by Paki snipers.

They are made to with stand anything.Never heard of Mil standard.By the way we use lot of electronic equipment in heat of rajasthan and severe cold of siachen.

You can do trials of them, and I am sure they will not pass any of the trials.
Yes most fail at first attempt they will go back to drawing board and comes back again and again until it passes mil standard tests.

I am sure they got tons of these laying around, wonder the probability of them being used as DMRs like this.
I've been saying this from long ago. A bit of re engineering could achieve you wonder with this in 762. But then again, if it solves the very purpose, from where our GSQR guys would collect the kickbacks?
