Its not about having a nuclear submarine. It is about having them operational. The Han class vessels have been mothballed and kept away by China for a long time...as the new jin class subs are coming the whole operational data must be regenerated and everything must be re-evaluated. This is the problem of having Nuclear submarines. You also have a reactor in it which has to be maintained, you have to develop a credible SLBM and maintain it. There is one more issue...The missiles in the SLBM are the only ones which is always kept mated with the nuclear warheads the land and air based ones are always kept far from the delivery system. Thus if any trigger happy captain commands the sub then God help us all. The Pakistanis may have the Chinese to help them get one but the Chinese cant maintain it for them...The Pakistanis can lease the submarine but will the navy's budget be able to maintain it?...that is questionable. And the Chinese cant sell the SLBM as it will be a direct violation of MTCR.

Saya when our dear navy can make a deal for 45k crores yes we can maintain 6 submarines easily. Our navy gets a very good budget...and the budget seems to be increasing only. No decrease is going to be seen for the next decade.

satish by mistake i read this post

For a effective control & monitor of its supply lines, INDIA needs at-least 12 SSBN's supported by another 30 / 35 SSK's, to counter Chinese interference in the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea & Bay of Bengal.

The numbers might sound huge, but if compared with the Chinese Sub Fleet, this futuristic projection will still fell short.

Chinese SUB Fleet :
Nuclear-Powered Submarines = 8 no's ( Jin, Shang, Xia & Han Class )
Diesel-Electric Submarines = 56 no's ( Yuan, Kilo, Song, Ming & Romeo Class )

The Indian Navy has to plan now for 2020 or be ready to loose its control to the Chinese.

:vehicle_plane:
that is why i said do we have money for all the above subs

its my mistake

INS Arihant makes NPOL scientists proud

First Published : 27 Jul 2009 11:49:26 AM IST

KOCHI: Many a heart at the Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory(NPOL), Kochi, would have swelled in pride when 'INS Arihant’, the country’s first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine, touched waters in Vishakahpatnam on Sunday. For, the eyes and ears of INS Arihant were designed and developed by scientist of the NPOL.The sonar(Sound Navigation and Ranging) system installed on Arihant are a combination of two communication systems named `Ushus’ and ‘Panchendriya’. Panchendriya is a an integrated submarine sonar and tactical control system, comprising a passive surveillance sonar, a passive ranging sonar, an intercept sonar, an active sonar and an underwater communications system. Ushus is a new-generation sonar for `kilo-class’ submarines.During the past two decades, the NPOL had given the Indian Navy an impressive 87 percent self-reliance in acoustic sensors for warships and submarines. All the warships of the Navy, including ships acquired from foreign countries, are fitted with DRDO sonars like the APSOH, HUMVAD and HUMSA. Sonar is a technique that uses sound propagation(usually underwater) to navigate and communicate with or detect other vessels.

Going by what Shiv Aroor has drawn on his blogspot, as his recollection of the sub, then it shows very little resemblence to any Russian nuke sub designs, but has a close similarity to USS Ohio class Ballistic Submarine. Look at the Dive Planes, Slight gradual hump etc, Russians dont use dive planes on their nuke subs, since it is a part which might easily break while breaking Ice in the artic.

Do take note, that Borei, Akula, Yassen, Charilie II, none of them have diveplanes; it is a serious design difference.

AFAIK,

The first ATV ie INS Arihant will not carry a towed sonar pod. The next two will.

Launch of INS Arihant a 'destabilising step', says Pakistan

STAFF WRITER 17:34 HRS IST
Karachi, Jul 27 (PTI) Pakistan today termed the induction of an indigenously-built nuclear-powered submarine by India as a "destabilising step" and said it was capable of defending itself in the face of all such regional challenges.

"The government of Pakistan is fully aware of this issue and is prepared to counter it at all levels. Pakistan's defence is fully prepared to face this challenge," Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar told reporters in response to a question about India's launch of 'INS Arihant'.

"We don't want any wars but we know how to defend ourselves," he said adding, Pakistan is capable of defending itself against all such challenges.

A Pakistan Navy spokesman told reporters that India's launch of a nuclear submarine was "a destabilising step which would jeopardise the security paradigm of the entire Indian Ocean region".

N-submarine still wrapped in secrecy- Politics/Nation-News-The Economic Times

N-submarine still wrapped in secrecy
27 Jul 2009, 1616 hrs IST, IANS

VISAKHAPATNAM: India's first nuclear submarine remains shrouded in secrecy -- despite its public launch.

The cloak of secrecy over the project, the existence of which has been denied by successive governments since its inception in 1984, was lifted Sunday when the defence ministry took journalists for the launch ceremony at this port city. However, no photography or filming of the submarine was allowed.

The official photographs of the event did not show a clear image of the submarine either.

The only glimpse of the vessel -- that has made India the only nation in the Indian Ocean region to have a nuclear submarine and the sixth in the world to have the capability to design and construct a nuclear submarine -- was in the photograph of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the ceremony.

But the journalists, naval officers, 143 Russian technicians and diplomats could see the 110-metre-long and 11-metre-broad sea leviathan from the closest possible distance.

The design of the submarine that has a surface displacement of 6,000 tonnes clearly resembles the Russian Borei class nuclear-submarine. Its surface is uneven and its hull sits on a mat rolled with black square tiles, which are capable of absorbing sound waves and help it in maintaining stealth.

The white snub nose of the gleaming black submarine is the sonar (sound navigation and ranging) sheet of the vessel. It helps in recognising a vessel in the vicinity by receiving the reflected sound waves from its surface.

The conning tower is closer to the bow rather than the centre as in conventional submarines.

The orange beacon atop the conning tower came to life Sunday as the prime minister's wife Gursharan Kaur pressed the button to symbolise the launching of the vessel into water. On the conning tower stood the commander of INS Arihant Captain Anshuman Dutt.

In the middle of the body -- comprising an outer hull through which the water goes in and and an inner pressurised hull -- on the starboard side are two rectangular vents, meant to take in water when the vessel dives into the sea. It is like a "cocoon within a cocoon", explained an official.

INS Arihant is longer than any of the submarine in the Indian Navy's fleet so far. A nuclear submarine is powered by a nuclear reactor, which generates tremendous heat driving a steam turbine. It has unlimited underwater endurance and speed twice that of its conventional counterparts.

"Miniaturising the nuclear reactor was a big task and if you want people inside the vessel, it has to be self sufficient in terms of energy and power," V.K. Mehra, director, Reactor Project Group, Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, said.

The submarine can carry 12 nuclear missiles K-15 and is the sea-leg of the nuclear troika of India -- capability to launch nuclear weapons from land, air and sea. Keeping in line with its "no first use policy", the submarine will help India in developing a "credible second strike capability" in case of nuclear attack, said officials.

Indian Navy has been operating conventional diesel-electric submarines, which have to surface to charge their batteries.

Pakistan seems to be speaking for China, the ATV is unlikely to be used against them;other diesel-electric subs are more than adequate for pakistan.

They can't do " we too have" thing with types of tech/weapons. Hence the outcry.
You can also interpret this as one form of Begging their donors for NSUB.

they can beg all they want i don't see anyone donating one, nuclear subs are pretty expensive.

from bay of bengal, Arihant should have missile of atleast 5000km range to reach beijing and from Indian ocean its more than 6000km. So if Agni-IIISL has 3500-4000km, it may not be enough from Indian Ocean, Arihant has to patrol near phillipines, japan, korea.

I agree with you ajay, India should have more longer range missile to deter the threat comprehensively.

I can tell you Categorically that there is not going to be any design changes in the Arihant-2 and 3. Which means no Towed array sonar,Look at the Akula-2 Improved, why it is not needed at all.
And stop comparing Arihant to Borei, Yassen, Akula and Charlie, it is none of those. It is simply Arihant, a brand new design.

but than russians helped us with various things, and ATV project faced lot of problems. So Russian influence would be there with design and construction of submarine. India has never designed a submarine before, not even conventional.

considering we have uranium shortage, would be interesting to see how India would manage to supply enriched uranium for Arihant and future nuclear submairnes.

may be its time to start indigenous diesel-electric submarine class too. L&T would have got enough experience by now.
