Great informative article from Vishnu.

Why a nuclear sub is so important?
Vishnu Som, Sunday July 26, 2009, New Delhi

There are stealth fighters jets like the American B-2 which are invisible to radar, but in fact the ultimate stealth weapon is the nuclear submarine.

Diving the depths of the oceans, submarines universally run on one principal -- run silent, run deep; for all practical purposes make a hole in the water and do everything very quietly to avoid sonar searches from other submarines, ships or reconnaissance aircraft.

Detecting the latest nuclear ballistic missile submarines is often next to impossible.

It's a cat and mouse game which has gone on for decades, particularly during the Cold War when the US Navy went to any lengths to track the movement of Russian nuclear submarines particularly ballistic missile submarines.

The goal for both the US and Russian forces was to stay submerged and hidden off each others coastlines while being prepared to launch a volley of nuclear missiles at each other. Fortunately, that instruction never came.

Typically, Russian nuclear submarines were thought to be more noisy than their American counterparts and often and easy picking for the electronically advanced detection systems on board American attack submarines.

But there were areas where the Russians were ahead. Though noisier, several classes of their nuclear submarines were faster than their NATO opponents and more deep diving as well.

The Russians also built what NATO calls the Typhoon class, one of the most feared Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) ever made.

This largest class of nuclear submarines ever built was armed with nuclear tipped missiles so long ranged that they could actually strike their targets on the US coast without having to leave the safety of their docks.

In fact the nuclear missile complex lies at the heart of the nuclear ballistic missile submarine and some of the deadliest nuclear weapons ever created have been Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs).

American and Royal Navy nuclear submarines are armed with the Trident II D5 missile with a range of 8,000 km. French submarines have the M45 and M51 missiles with a range of more than 8000 mms.

Russia operates variant of the missile designated by NATO as SS-N-23 Skiff. This can strike targets 8,300 km away. Russia is also testing a new missile called SSNX-30 or Bulava with a range of more than 8,000 km.

And China is now developing the JL-2 missile which can also reportedly strike targets more than 7,000 km away.

India will now join the select group of nations with its own nuclear ballistic missile submarine. But it may be decades before the Indian Navy picks up the expertise to operate these submarines -- the most sophisticated and deadly military hardware ever built.

“The second submarine will have more indigenous components,” Verma told IANS.

According to sources, construction on the second submarine has already begun.
that means we have got parts from (Russia), but we are reaching stage where everything will be home made :d_training:

INS Arihant to take long time to become operational: Experts - India - NEWS - The Times of India

INS Arihant to take long time to become operational: Experts
PTI 26 July 2009, 07:23pm IST

VISHAKAPATNAM: India's first indigenously built nuclear-powered submarine launched on Sunday will take much longer than the projected two years to become operational, according to naval experts, who say the real big test now is to ensure that the on-board reactor attains criticality.

defence minister A K Antony, Andhra Pradesh CM YR
Reddy and others at the launching of India's first
nuclear submarine, INS Arihant at Visakhapatnam.

Noting there is still lot left to do, the experts said scientists had a onerous task to see that the on-board nuclear reactor - the heart of the submarine - attains criticality without any hitches.

Naval officials said INS Arihant (Destroyer of Enemies) codenamed Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) will undergo two years of sea trials in the Bay of Bengal after which they hope to see the submarine commissioned for full service.

"It is little optimistic only for one reasons because it the first of its class. In the first of the class there are a large number of checks to be carried out. It could take much longer time frame than the two years being projected (for INS Arihant)," said Vice Admiral A K Singh(retd) former Captain of INS Chakra, the Charlie-class nuclear submarine.

The second ATV or the third ATV will definitely come out much faster, Singh said.

C Uday Bhaskar, Director, National Maritime Foundation, said, " I don't think we should over-interpret the capability of the Arihant at this stage because there are many more complex technological steps before the particular nuclear reactor on the Arihant acquires criticality."

Bhaskar said hopefully three to five years down the road India would be a credible naval power because the country would then have the capability to fit the submarine with nuclear propulsion.

Former Naval Chief Admiral (retd) Arun Prakash said a lot of work lies ahead for the country's scientists and engineers.

"The big day will however come when the nuclear reactor attains criticality," he said.

Admiral (retd) Arun Prakash said painstaking series of trials are necessary because even a minor malfunction can cause catastrophic results as the Kursk(Russian Submarine) accident showed.

"They will also be long drawn-out and time-consuming because each defect that appears will be carefully analysed and rectified," he said.

Experts also said the state-owned Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) could take two to three years to indigenously develop cruise and ballistic missiles which can be fired from the submarine.

L&T plays crucial role in building India's first nuclear-powered submarine

L&T plays crucial role in building India's first nuclear-powered submarine
BS Reporter / Mumbai July 26, 2009, 19:03 IST

Engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) today said it has played a critical role in building India’s first nuclear powered submarine, which was launched today.

Based on the design provided by the Navy and Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDO), L&T’s submarine design centre carried out detailed engineering, using the latest 3D modeling and product data management software, said a press release.

"We feel very proud to have contributed significantly to realizing India’s dream of an indigenous nuclear submarine. Over the last four decades, L&T has played a crucial pioneering role in building India’s strategic sectors by successfully executing several technology-intensive and challenging projects," said A M Naik, chairman and managing director of L&T.

Building the first nuclear submarine was the latest milestone in L&T's association with the Indian Navy and the DRDO. L&T was looking forward to building more submarines and warships, he said.

In May, the company had entered into an agreement to float a joint venture (JV) with the largest defence equipment maker in Europe, EADS Defence and Security, to tap the Rs 50,000 crore Indian defence market. The JV is to design, develop and manufacture electronic warfare equipment, radars, military avionics and mobile systems for military requirements. L&T was planning to invest about Rs 2,000 crore over the next three years on defence-related business, Naik had said.

In addition to being the country’s first nuclear-powered indigenous submarine, the new vessel is also the largest and heaviest vessel ever built in India. L&T made the single largest contribution in the construction of this vessel, right from the stage of plate cutting to launch, said the release.

L&T also has co-operation agreements with three major nuclear reactor makers. These are Atomstroyexport (ASE), part of Rosatom of Russia, Toshiba Westinghouse of the US and Atomic Energy of Canada (AEC). The company is also in talks with General Electric Hitachi of the US and Areva of France.

Man, if I am not wrong... this is the retired submarine on the Vishakapatnam beach road.
I did my MBA from Vishakapatnam. We used to sit on the beach road every day.

It's the foxtrot class which was decommissioned.

India launches nuclear-powered submarine

MOSCOW, July 26 (RIA Novosti) - India launched its first nuclear-powered submarine on Sunday for sea trials, national media reported.
The launch ceremony of the 6,000-ton INS Arihant (Destroyer of Enemies) was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur, the Times of India said.
The submarine completes India's nuclear triad, making it the sixth country after the U.S., Russia, China, France and the U.K. to have land, air and sea-based nuclear strike capability.
The submarine will be armed with torpedoes and missiles, including 12 ballistic missiles, and can also be armed with cruise missiles, the paper said. It is powered by an 85-MW reactor, and can reach a submerged speed of 44 km/h (24 knots). It will carry 95 crewmembers.
The long-running project to build the submarine, completed with Russian help, is part of a $2.9-billion plan to build five submarines.
The design was based on a Charlie 1 submarine that India leased from the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. Sea trials and weapons tests will take place in the Bay of Bengal, and the submarine is expected to enter service in two or three years.
