DRDO develops ‘health monitoring system’ for INS Arihant

http://idrw.org/drdo-develops-health-monitoring-system-for-ins-arihant/

SOURCE : UNI

Taking lesson from the past accidents involving the Navy’s submarines, Indian defence scientists have developed a health monitoring system for underwater vessel that can alert about any potential breakdown thereby averting a possible mishap.

India’s nuclear submarine INS Arihant was being equipped with this system, a exhaustive book on the navy’s submarine fleet has revealed.

“System works on the philosophy of predictive maintenance and has been installed on the first indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant,” recently launched book, the story of Indian Navy’s Submarine Arm, “Foxtrot To Arihant” has disclosed.

“The Kilo-class and Shishumar class submarines were lacking a health monitoring systems that can alert technicians ashore,” author of the book Joseph P Chacko, told UNI.

A separate chapter on submarine mishaps gives an idea as to how underwater vessel accidents had been jolting the navy’s vital arm.

Don't know if this has been posted. What do Chinese media think about India's nuclear submarine programme? They are also talking something about surrounding India with Chinese subs in case of war.

They should also fast-track K-4 SLBM right now. Also is there any news on INS Aridhaman?

Nuke U-boat to test underwater missile fire
— By FPJ Bureau | Jul 11, 2015 12:39 am

BASIT called all senior Hurriyat and JKLF leaders immediately after Modi-Sharif meet in Ufa was confirmed

New Delhi : The nuclear-powered INS Arihant submarine is ready to undergo its first-ever underwater missile firing test later this year to become India’s first submarine-launched ballistic missile.

The missile to be mounted on is of medium range variety code-named ‘B-05’ capable of carrying a nuclear-tipped warhead. China has five such operational submarines with its missile range much more than ‘B-05’.

DRDO director-general Dr S Christopher confirmed the plans to let INS Arihant go for deep sea diving with a series of tests. He said it would be a strategic weapon carrying the nuke warhead, though he skirted the question whether ‘B-05’ can carry one-tonne warhead to be launched from under water.

On DRDO’s other weapons in the offing, he said a new missile Agni-VI will have the range of 10,000 km albeit with a smaller warhead than Agni-V. He said this was, however, at the thinking stage as DRDO still does not have the sanction to make it, though it has the capacity. It would soon present its case before the government on the need for such a missile.

China’s inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) like the Dongfeng-21 have a range of 11,000 km. A missile that can travel more than 5500 km is classified as an ICBM.

The construction hours of some warships have been reported as follows:

Country Ship type keel Displacement Tonnes Time Man-hours to Commissioning
US DD651 8315 30 5,000,000
US FFG-7 3500 30 2,500,000
Japan
DD173 9485 34 2,036,000
Japan DD158 4500 29 1,000,000
Italy
D-560 5400 42 -
Germany
F-215 4490 38 -
Canada
FFH300 5235 51 2,100,000
Canada
DD6280 5100 42 2,300,000

India
Godavari Class 3600 72 10,800,000
India
Delhi class 6500 100 18,200,000

The Indian shipyards take about 10 times the man-hours taken by Japanese shipyards and 3 times the calendar months. There is a lot of room for improvement in modernizing Indian shipyards and reducing build periods.

US, Germany, UK, Italy etc are building warships since World War II. India has just started manufacturing state of the art indigenous warships and don't forget how corrupt Indian bureaucrats with Swiss bank accounts are forcing our brave men in uniform to import from other countries. Now common people in India have realised this mistake and that day is not far when India will compete against other countries shipyards in terms of quality control and man-hours at a low cost.

INS Arihant prepares for International debut in 2016

With President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who are expected to attend the International Fleet Review (IFR) in Visakhapatnam in February next year, DRDO and Indian Navy are sweating it hard to make the event special by Showcasing India’s indigenously developed nuclear submarine INS Arihant at the event.

Naval Sources who have informed to idrw.org that INS Arihant might make its International debut at International Fleet Review (IFR) in Visakhapatnam which will see participation from 50 nations, including the US, China and Japan but warned it will happen only if INS Arihant Successfully competes few tests which have been planned for the submarine later this year.

DRDO Chief Dr. S Christopher few weeks back had confirmed that INS Arihant is currently been armed with B-05/K-15 India’s first Submarine launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) with range of over 700km and first test firing from the submarine likely will take place by year-end, but it is not confirmed if it is related to Missile firing tests.

International Fleet Review (IFR) will take place between February 5 to 8 which is to be held in port city Visakhapatnam. India had invited 79 countries of which 37 have already confirmed participation. It is expected that nearly 50 countries will confirm their participation by year end.

Navy is making elaborate arrangements for the meet and Top Naval Commanders are keen to Showcase INS Arihant at the event which will see heavy attendance from VVIPS but it still can be no Show if there is some level of objection from other Agencies or NSA Ajit Doval who has been critical of the program and wants to keep Submarine away from the limelight .

Why show the Arihant? It should only be shown once Aridaman and the next boat are in water.
