how far back in history do you read? It was amerika that saved pakistan in 1971 and armed Pakistan to the teeth in 1965 that it became so brazen to attack india and almost won. This is global politcs, there are no real friends and allies and the biggest neighbor India is not China or Russia its the USN parked in the IOR. INS Arihant is too short legged to even pose a challenge against China. So far it is only meant for Pakistan.

As far as Arihant targeting Pakistan I think thats a logical thing to do since this a test of deterrence not a real one. Arihant was a first a prototype/testing/training vessel smaller than whats really coming in the future and the K-15 is not originally designed for dropping nukes. We know this because the Soviets also had similar missiles designed to target USN battle groups. India does not need a ballistic missile to drop nukes on Pakistan, thats not an opinon, its a fact! India does not need a 700-1000 km missile to drop nukes on China, its not effective and Agnis reach more of China. There for logic dictates the Arihant and K-15 have similar role like the Oscar subs of USSR/Russia. If Arihant and future SSNs can make USN in IOR blink, PLAN and PN won't be a problem. Su-30MKI, Agni 5'/6s, Brahmos, these things are not designed to deter China. Publicly India will claim the China threat, but in reality its the USN whom are strong enough to beat India to a dark age. Imagine if the US has a bad day with Indian diplomats.

Actually, India is very well capable of defeating USA Navy. USA can't simply transport the goods from half way around the world and fight against a big power like India. China is not a threat and even a potential ally of India if concession on Tibet issue particularly Dalai lama issue is made.

If India decides to go all out and ramp up its production of defence, there is hardly anything USA can do about it. Also, India holds the key for Arab petroleum. If India decides to unleash and wipe out Pakistan or simply expel 20 crore muslims, middle east and their oil supply will go down. USA is strong only when the cowardly and poor character people like Vajpayee showed weakness. Otherwise, the mere threat of expelling 20 crore muslims and causing starvation in middle east is enough to terrorise USA and make them flinch. That has been done now and as a result, India is now getting a lot of respect in world stage along with jitters to USA. USA was shouting recently that Arabs are threatening USA and trying to extort. The reason why USA has ramped up its oil production to 11MBPD is also due to this threat of Arabs.

So, India should not simply focus on USA alone but try to build up its capability to be fit to fight against anyone and everyone who is against India, even the USA as well as other neighbours

Arhinat has 750km missiles. SHow me one single SSBN which has such low range missiles. Also, K15 is a quasi ballistic missile which acts like hypersonic cruise missile and can home in on the target. This shows that Arihant is not a SSBN but a SSN with missile firing ability, rather than dedicated to firing ballistic missiles.

SSBNs make no sense as the idea that first strike will wipe out everything is simply a joke. The measly 12 missiles per submarines can't compare to the thousands of missiles on land silos, bunkers, under lakes etc. Also, missiles are not magic elements that the will strike without warning. India can detect any missile being launched and can immediately fire in full force against the enemy. Even the best missiles take about 5 minutes to enter important regions of India after being fired from Pakistan and that is enough time to react. SSBN is simply a big waste of billions of dollars and of Uranium

The Government of India approved the construction of six new nuclear powered attack submarines (SSN)[1] in February 2015.[2] These will be designed by the Navy's in-house Directorate of Naval Design and indigenously built in the Shipbuilding Center at Visakhapatnam. Expertise gained in the construction of the Arihant class SSBNs will be transferred to the SSN project. Since India is a traditional user of Russian nuclear submarines (with INS Chakra (2011) on lease) the new domestically built submarines would be third class of SSN operated by Indian navy after leased Charlie-class submarine and Akula-class submarines.[3] All six submarines are expected to be constructed in India under the Make in India program.[

The second Arihant class sub is operational for sure. Vishnu Som has said that INS Arighat has been recently commissioned.

Modi wouldn't have announced the operationalisation of the the third leg of the nuclear triad hadn't there been another Arihant class sub which is now on deterrent patrol in lieu of INS Arihant.
Without a second sub we would have an intermittent deterrence capability as far as subs are concerned.

Also I believe that K4 is operational.

Su-30MKI and Agni5 are weapons acquired exactly for China:
Indian general made it very clear to Russian when they put down the order of Su-30MKI: they wanted something better than Su-30MKK.
Agni 5 with only 5000km (even 8000km as some claims) is still far away from USA which requires a 13000km ICBM of India.
Agni 6? Let's not waste time on sth still on the paper.
Brahmos? On one hand, Indian navy can handle PLAN in Indian Ocean quite easily even without Brahmos, on the other hand, Brahmos won't help a lot when facing USN.

For example, they can stop every western country from supplying high-tech products to India, which are generally the core part of those Indian indigenous weapons. It will take India at least couple of years to replace them with local or Russian components at the cost of lower performance

If you mean India initiates a nuclear war to wipe out Pakistan, USA is very capable of handling the rest of Indian nuclear force. But this time, the Russians will join them;

Expelling 200 million your own citizens (15% of total population) is a perfect suicide strategy.

Looks like there were more tests of K4 and also K15 than were actually disclosed.

I wonder if the hatch-flooding reports and the undisclosed patrols/missile tests are linked.
