Tupolev claimed a radius of action of only 2,200km for the early model Backfires. The US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) initially had estimated the Backfire's unrefuelled combat radius at approximately 5,000 km, sufficient to pose a strategic threat to the United States, while the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) estimate was about 3,700 km. subsequently the DIA estimate was reduced to about 4,000 km, and the CIA estimate to 3,360-3,960 km.

Question for Navy Nerds--
Can new VLS be added on existing vessels of indian navy as new missiles come up?

Yes, provided space has been pre-allocated for it. Like Kolkata class & Visag class has pre-allocated empty space in Hull. Can add more VLS if and when needed.

Ideally would be to re develop Andaman and Nicobar islands in the lines of British Virgins Island.
We develop it like an offshore financial centre for India. Gateway for investing in India, so that we stop losing money of offshore in Mauritius, Singapore etc.
Second step re populate it with ex servicemen and their family.
Third, fortify it with additional squadron of Sukhoi 30mki to reinforce Jaguar.
Fourth develop the bunkering and shipyard.

Govt doesnt want to mass displace people, which is okay too. We can reclaim land from sea there, then build mil facilities

yeah for sure but I was saying that if we station tu22 not even tu 160 it can give total dominance over ior.

A warship is as good as it's weapons. All our new ships (frigates and destroyer) are underarmed. They are neither air defence platform, nor a strike platform. So i will think twice before calling them a solid platform.

most ships now days are overarmed as in a real battle scenarios,you wont get a chance to use 70-120 missiles on your ship,most likely if you are targetted,your ship will go down after the enemy sends 10 missiles at you max.that means you might intrcept 5-7 missiles and 5-3 missles will hit.it will then take down a whole ship with precious unsed missiles in the number of 50-70 missiles.

in the case of attack you will at max use 10 missiles at a time,even less if it is a weak target that cant defend itself much.

carrying a lot of missiles that will probably never be used is just wsting space and money.

Better to have it and not having one when required. Especially in multiple battle fronts where a ship might need need.to go to another area of battle.without reloading.
IN has also planned on using our ships to Northern IOR for now. So it has accepted less numbers of missiles as a compromise. When it thinks bigger, we would need bigger numbers.

So can it add more vls as they have understood the problem
If so when can we expect it
Ample space is there we shouldn't waste time anyway how much time will it take add vls if they have already made plan for it and kept the proposal for future

No ship is getting it till their mid life upgrade. Barak is getting costly as hell. India is copying some aspects of Barak in their new MRSAM. I don't think for the next 10 years anyway.
Again it also depends upon requirements. If IN decides we are going to fight only in the IOR, 32 SAMs and 8 AshM is more than enough for frigates.

Some funny thing is our older, but not.too old ships Shivalik class, which we built with some design consultancy from Russia, has 32 Sam, 24 SSM, 8 AshM etc. Our new ships have lesser loads.

Our newest destroyer has just extra 8 more AshM slots than our frigates. We can build 32 more. It's all fine if we fight within BoB, Andamans and Arabian Sea. But in open waters, it's not enough.

Am not sir for sure. No we can't. Unfortunately we don't have an universal launcher. Barak and Brahmos have different VLS. DRDO is working towards a common system. So they can't increase Brahmos without adding VLS for Brahmos.
