Russia to equip four Indian subs with new cruise missiles

MOSCOW, September 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Zvezdochka shipyard said on Wednesday it will install Club-S cruise missile systems on four Kilo class diesel submarines in service with the Indian navy in the next five years.

Russia has built ten Kilo class submarines for India. Only two of them — the INS Sindhugosh and INS Sindhuvijay — have reportedly been equipped with the Club-S (SS-N-27) cruise missiles to date.

"The new missile system will be installed on the INS Sindhuratna, INS Sindhuraj, INS Sindhushastra, and INS Sindhuvir. The retrofit will be carried out at Indian shipyards," the shipyard in northern Russia said in a statement.

"Zvezdochka will finish this work in the next five years," the statement said.

The Club-S subsonic cruise missile is designed for launch from a 533 mm torpedo tube, or a vertical launch tube. It has a range of 160 nautical miles (about 300 km). It uses an ARGS-54 active radar seeker and Glonass satellite and inertial guidance.

In addition, Zvezdochka is getting ready to overhaul another Indian Kilo class submarine — the INS Sindhurakshak under a deal which is expected to be signed in spring 2010.

"The submarine will be delivered to Severodvinsk in June 2010," the shipyard said.

Russia agreed in 2001 to upgrade all 10 Indian Kilo class submarines and has previously overhauled four subs at the Zvezdochka shipyard.

The upgrade program involves a complete overhaul of the submarines, including their hull structures, as well as improved control systems, sonar, electronic warfare systems, and an integrated weapon control system. The upgrades are reported to be costing about $80 million.

Russia's Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines have gained a reputation as extremely quiet boats, and have been purchased by China, India, Iran, Poland, Romania and Algeria.

a kilo refit has been started in HSL, India, even after 5 yrs couldnt complete and may take another 5YRS to refit or upgrade,
in Russia it only takes 2 yrs for completion.

there are no pans to build 6 aircraft carriers the IN and set its priorities that it will be a 3 carrier fleet of which 2 must always be on active service, also having 6 aircraft carriers is not worthwhile a carrier is large burden on the navy to maintain its support fleet will take big chunk of the frigates and destroyers together with subs as a result lots of vessels will be tied up in time of conflict its not wise at all and the navy is moving ahead in the correct step

Steps initiated to strengthen coastal security: Admiral Verma

Kochi: Steps have been initiated to strengthen the country's coastal security, Naval Chief Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma said Thursday and expressed optimism that the targets set for the coastal defence would be met.

Addressing a ceremonial parade at the Naval base here, Verma stressed on the need for cooperation from the locals with the navy and other civilian agencies to ensure total security of the coastal areas.

Stressing on the need to constantly review the training curriculum to keep pace with the evolving security challenges, Admiral Verma, on his first visit to the Southern Naval Command, said training was the most important peacetime activity.

He later visited the recently established Joint Operations Centre for Coastal Defence where he was briefed on the Coastal Security Architecture of the Kerala Coast. He also addressed the Naval and Coast Guard officers, a Naval press release said.

Second stealth destroyer to be launched tomorrow - India - NEWS - The Times of India

Second stealth destroyer to be launched tomorrow
TNN 17 September 2009, 02:36am IST

NEW DELHI: The Navy will launch its second 6,500-tonne stealth destroyer on Friday that would be fitted with state-of-the-art weapon systems, including the supersonic BrahMos surface-to-surface missile.

The destroyer will be named INS Kochi and has been indigenously built by Mazagon Docks Ltd in Mumbai and designed by the Directorate of Naval Design. The three stealth destroyers will add to existing Delhi class fleet comprising INS Delhi, INS Mysore and INS Mumbai.

Madhulika Verma, wife of Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma, will launch the ship. It has an built-in feature which makes it less vulnerable to detection by enemy radar. Besides BrahMos, it will be fitted with the LRSAM (Long Range Surface-to-Air Missiles) and the MFStar (Multi-Function Radar System) providing accurate data on surface and aerial targets.

A Navy spokesperson said the ship's close-range defence capability will be boosted by four AK-630 rapid-fire guns and a medium-range gun. The ship will also be fitted with indigenously developed twin-tube torpedo launchers and anti-submarine rocket launchers, the Humsa-NG hull-mounted sonar, and two multi-role helicopters adding punch to the ship's anti-submarine capability. The maximum speed of the ship is above 30 knots.

The destroyer will be launched using the pontoon-assisted launch technique, to be employed for the first time in the history of indigenous warship building. This technique helps in overcoming slipway constraints and permits launching of heavier vessels.

AK630 and Kashtan are two different CIWS systems. AK630 is pictured above and you can see it is a single 30mm gatlin gun. Kashtan has twin GSh-30mm gatlin guns as well as two autoloader quad launchers for Grison SAMs.

Navy chief asks maritime stakeholders to work together

Kochi, Sep 17 (ANI): Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma today asked all the maritime stakeholders to work together against terror.

Admiral Verma is visiting the Southern Naval Command for the first time after taking over the reins of the Indian Navy.

Addressing the sailors and all ranks of the Southern Naval Command, Admiral Verma said the coastal security has become a new challenge in the Indian waters and a co-operation by all the stakeholders is paramount.

“I am talking about the Mumbai terror attacks that happened in last November. Where it was found that there were lapses in coastal security because of which such situation had arisen in Mumbai,” Admiral Verma said.

He added : “When the matter was looked into, it was found that even if navy and coastal guards work together, it is not sufficient because in maritime sphere there are lot of stakeholders. So it is important for them all to work together and closely with each other.”

Admiral Verma also emphasized the need of support from the fishermen community in maintaining the coastal security. (ANI)

Are you sure the purchase of Barak is a good idea? It failed to protect an Israeli corvette from a Silkworm missile and Israel has been bribing Indian officials to buy it. Something is fishy with it.

Responsibilities on Indian Navy increased after 26/11: Verma

Mumbai: Naval Chief Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma on Friday said that responsibilities of the Indian Navy has increased post 26/11 terror attacks and suggested to bring all coastal vigilance agencies "under a single security magnet."

Addressing a ceremonial parade at the Indian Navy's helicopter base INS Shikra, Verma said, "After last year's 26/11 incident, lots of developments took place and at the same time the responsibilities in terms of coastal security have increased. We should bring all agencies involved in the coastal vigilance like Marine Police and Customs under one security magnet and ensure effective co-ordination."

On his first visit to Mumbai after assuming office as the Navy Chief, Verma said, "Western Naval Command always had greater resposibilies ever since Navy's inception and it met all responsibilties."

"An exercise for Navy personnel was conducted in Western Naval Command recently and we have learnt several lessons in the exercise. More exercises should be conducted to enable us to keep pace with security challenges," he said.

He expressed optimism that if big responsibilties are given, the Navy will surely meet them.

"To strenghthen the Navy, more aircraft will be procured. With more equipment, we will find ourselves confident in facing most difficult of situation we may face at sea route," he said.
