India asks Russia to
upgrade two submarines

MOSCOW, July 25. /ITAR- TASS/. India has asked Russia to upgrade two its submarines, director-general of the Rubin Central Maritime Design Bureau Igor Vilnit said on Friday. "The Indian governments filed a request to the Russian Federal Service for Military- Technical Cooperation to extend the life of two Russian Kilo Class submarines (Type 877EKM)," he said. Specialists of the Zvyozdochka ship repair centre and the Rubin design bureau are expected to leave for India to inspect the first submarine. "We're optimistic about military-technical cooperation with the new Indian government," Vilnit said. Russia and India develop military-technical cooperation since the mid 1960's. In the mid 1990's Russia and India signed an interstate agreement on military-technical cooperation. The ten submarines were supplied to India's Navy from 1986 to 2000.

INS Shivalik Calls at Hai Phong, Vietnam

In a fine demonstration of the operational reach and pursuit of India's 'Look East' policy, the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet, under the Command of Rear Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, is on an operational deployment to the South China Sea and the North Western Pacific region. Three Eastern Fleet units, (frontline warships) departed Indian shores in mid June and have since been operating in the South China Sea and Western Pacific. The warships earlier participated in the Indo-Russian bilateral naval exercise INDRA 14 and the trilateral naval exercise MALABAR 14 with the US Navy and Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF), in the N W Pacific & Sea of Japan. As a part of this deployment, INS Shivalik, a guided missile stealth frigate, under the Command of Captain Puruvir Das NM, has arrived at Hai Phong on a three day goodwill visit. The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing inter- operability between navies of the two nations. During the stay in harbour, various activities are planned including official calls, reception on board ship, ship open to visitors, guided tours for Indian naval personnel and professional interaction between personnel of both the navies. On departure, the ship will exercise with Vietnamese Naval ships for improving inter-operability in communication, search and rescue procedures and other areas. The Eastern Fleet had earlier visited Hai Phong in May 2012. The ship along with two others INS Ranvijay, a guided missile destroyer and INS Shakti, a fleet- support ship, would return to India in mid Aug 14 after a two month long deployment.

MOSCOW, August 05. /ITAR- TASS/. Russia's Kamov helicopter design bureau is ready to supply jointly with the Russian Helicopters rotocraft producer the necessary number of modern seaborne helicopters for the Indian Navy on request, Kamov Chief Designer Sergei Mikheyev said on Tuesday. "Upon request from the Indian Navy, we are ready to supply jointly with Russian Helicopters the necessary number of seaborne helicopters and offer the latest developments to the Indian side, including the Ka-52K helicopters," Mikheyev said. Helicopters operational in the Indian Navy and Coastal Guard have long grown obsolete over the absence of programs for the purchase of helicopters in the past decade, strict armament-buying procedures and the scandal-hit Augusta- Westland chopper deal, India Today reported recently. The deteriorating condition of helicopters prompted Indian Defense Minister Arun Jaitley to raise the problem at a session of the Defense Acquisition Council on July 19. Many Indian warships equipped with two hangars have no helicopters on their board. In particular, only three out of six Talwar-class frigates are supplied with choppers while others have none. The Indian Navy and Coastal Guard have only 20% of the required number of helicopters.
