Upgraded Pinaka rocket successfully test-fired, range now 70km

The earlier Pinaka version, which was an unguided one, has now been upgraded into a guided version, with a navigation, guidance and control kit developed by the Research Centre.

An upgraded version of Pinaka rocket, with a guidance system and an enhanced range, was successfully test-fired from the Proof & Experiment Establishment (PXE) at Chandipur in Odisha on Wednesday.

“Two rounds of tests have been conducted and some more rounds have been planned,” said a defence source in Balasore.

The earlier Pinaka version, which was an unguided one, has now been upgraded into a guided version, with a navigation, guidance and control kit developed by the Research Centre, Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, he said.

The RCI comes under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

According to a source in the DRDO, the conversion helped in enhancing the range and accuracy of Pinaka.

If its range was earlier 40 km, it is more than 70 km now, he said.

“Radars, electro-optical systems and telemetry systems at the defence range at Chandipur, tracked and monitored the rocket all through its flight path. The guided version is Pinaka mark-II, which evolved from Pinaka mark-I,” the source said.

The success of the guided Pinaka has reinforced the technological strength of the country in converting the unguided systems into weapons of high precision, he added.

The guided Pinaka was developed jointly by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, the RCI, and the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad.

The PXE, Chandipur, provided the range and launch support.

They always have the option of painting few WS series MRL into Pakistan colors and present it as their indigenous System ..

Pinaka has still a long way to catch up with SMERCH and also with WS series

This makes Pinaka to have higher range than Pakistani Nasr missile which has 60km range. Pakistani tactical missile is worse than Indian rockets!

Smerch is 90km rockets. I guess, we have Prahaar missile for it. Too long range rockets may turn out to be too expensive but with poor accuracy. Also, 20km difference is not a big deal. We can get that much with some upgrades

DRDO to deliver advanced Pinaka rocket version by 2020

Pune: The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will deliver guided Pinaka rocket with an enhanced range of up to 75 km to the army by 2020.
The current range of Pinaka is 40 km.

“An upgraded version of Pinaka rocket, with new guided system and an enhanced range, was successfully test-fired at Chandipur in Odisha recently. The results of the trial were excellent,” PK Mehta, director general, Armament Combat Engineering (ACE) cluster headquartered in Pune, told TOI.

As per the plan, the advanced version of the rocket will be inducted into the force in the next two years, Mehta said.

“Currently, we are working on the rocket’s control and guidance system, which will be perfected in the coming months. Thereafter, the rocket will go through several trials, including user trials,” Mehta added.

Explaining the importance of the guided version of the rocket, Mehta said, “The new version of the rocket will be a force multiplier for the Indian Army as it can hit long distance target with precision.”

Asked about the specific requirement of the army vis-a-vis new Pinaka, he said, “The army is still working on this aspect. They haven’t quoted any specific number so far”

In November last year, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) had cleared a request for proposal for six additional regiments of the artillery at a cost of Rs 14,633 crore.

A senior army officer told TOI, “The advanced version of the rocket will be in small numbers but it will give us an edge over enemies. The mix attack of the rockets will generate the required lethality on the battlefield.”

Pinaka, the indigenous unguided rocket system which has been undergoing extensive tests since the last 20 years, is capable of neutralising large areas with rapid salvos. The army had used it extensively during the Kargil war while hitting the mountain peaks of the enemy

In fact, more than 6,000 Pinaka rockets have been supplied to the army. The army has a projected requirement of 2 lakh rockets.

What can I say, looks like it needed Parrikar to come and get things moving. It took just one year for expansion to take place.

Latest defence committee report should give the current status.
One good thing that might emerge from the delay (even if it wasn't intentionally delayed for strategic reasons) is that more than likely the newer regiments will be raised with the longer ranged Pinaka Mk2.

I think range below 70Km is good enough for Indo-Pak and Sino-Indo war theatre. Smerch was conceived by Russian for their own widespread frontiers.

Producing Pinaka in great numbers is the key, increasing range and payload may make it cumbersome and a logistical distress.

We already have bought Smearch so what you say is not right. Delivery of a salvo of 12 rockets at a 120 KM range with 250 KG warhead each will give us a great fire power. It may find its application in north east as well.

Snerch has 90km range with 250kg warhead. Indian Prahaar missiles have 150km range with 200kg warhead. The weight if Smerch is 850kg while that of Prahaar is 1300kg. Diameter of smerch is 0.3metre while diameter of Prahaar is 0.43metre.

Prahaar missiles are also loaded on MBRL type launchers like this -

Smerch is launched by MBRL which come in two weight category like this -
Heavy:

Light:

The smerch may be able to fire 12 rocket salvo but Prahaar missile is known to have one of the highest accuracy. Also, if Smerch has to increase its range to 120-150km, the diameter and weight of the rockets will have to increase and that will take away the advantage of 12 salvo fire. Also, being rocket, the accuracy will be lower than Prahaar missiles. Overall, smerch is not the ideal rocket. Prahaar and Pinaka-2 are the right ones.

MBRL are highly cheap compared to missile. They are used to raze a whole are of say 1 sq km. Missiles are target specific.
