India Develops a Cheaper MLRS

February 18, 2008: After 25 years of development, the Indian army has begun receiving locally produced Pinaka self-propelled multiple rocket systems. These 12 barrel weapons fire 214mm rockets from tubes mounted on a truck. Maximum range is 40 kilometers. Pinaka will replace a similar Russian designed system that fired 122mm rockets and cost a bit more, at $850,000 per system. U.S. MLRS (multiple launch rocket system) systems cost over four million dollars each. Over the next two years, the army will receive 80 Pinaka systems. The 12 foot long rockets weigh 610 pounds each and contain a 220 pound warhead. Longer range (120 kilometers) rockets are also in development. A Pinaka regiment (18 launchers) was organized eight years ago, but mostly for show. Indian weapons development projects have long been criticized for being poorly run, and endless.

India's indigenously developed multi-barrel rocket launcher weapon system, 'Pinaka' was successfully tested on Wednesday jointly by the army and scientists from a defence base at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 km from Balasore, Orissa.

'Pinaka', which has undergone several tough tests since 1995 and in its advance stage of development, were put to sample trials at the Proof Experimental Establishment by army and scientists from Defence Research and Development Organisation, defence sources said.

"The objective of the trials was to assess its stability in flight as well as accuracy and consistency," a defence official said, adding that the MBRL, capable of acting as a force-multiplier, can gradually replace the current artillery system.

The first round of trial, conducted at 1214 hours, yielded the desired results, PXE director Maj-Gen Anup Malhotra said.

The tests coincided with the golden jubilee celebrations of the DRDO.

The sophisticated 'Pinaka' is an area weapon system aimed at supplementing the existing artillery gun at a range beyond 30 km. Its quick reaction time and high rate of fire gives an edge to the army during low-intensity warlike situation.

The unguided rocket system is meant to neutralise bigger geographical area with rapid salvo of rockets. With a range of 40 km, 'Pinaka' can fire salvo of 12 rockets in 44 seconds. One salvo each (12 rockets) from the battery of six launchers can neutralise at a time a target area of 3.9 sq km.

The system's capability to incorporate several types of warheads makes it deadly for the enemy as it can even destroy their solid structures and bunkers.

Wednesday's exercise involved six rounds of sample trials for which rockets were picked up randomly from 102 samples, the sources said.

Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), which is the nodal agency to develop the 'Pinaka', has also reported to have developed a high performance artillery rocket system, which can fire up to a range between 70 km and 120 km, they said.

ARDE has announced that it is developing a 7.2-metre rocket for the Pinaka MBRL, which can reach a distance of 120 km and carry a 250 kg payload. These new rockets can be fired in 44 seconds, have a maximum speed of mach 4.7, rise to an altitude of 40 km before hitting its target at mach 1.8 and can destroy an area of 3.9 sq km.

Integrating UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) with the Pinaka is also in the pipeline, as DRDO intends to install guidance systems on these rockets to increase their accuracy.

Development and trials will continue and the rocket is expected to enter service by 2012.

The first Pinaka regiment was raised in February 2000. A regiment consists of three batteries of six Pinakas each, plus reserves, the sources said.

Tata Power's [Get Quote] advanced material division and Larsen and Tubro's heavy engineering division were awarded a Rs 200 crore contract to produce 40 Pinaka MRBLs each.

Balasore (Orissa): India successfully tested Wednesday an advanced version of the indigenously built multi-barrel rocket launcher 'Pinaka' from a defence base in Orissa, officials said.

The multi-barrel rocket launching system (MBRLS) was tested from the Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE) in Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore district, some 230 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

“It was a product launch,” S.P. Dash, director of the Chandipur defence base, told IANS over telephone. PXE is part of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Capable of firing 12 rockets in a single salvo with 1.2 tonnes of high explosives within 40 seconds, the Pinaka system has already been tested on the field during the Kargil war.

“The developed version is a sophisticated shoot-and-scoot high mobility system. The test today (Wednesday) was aimed at improving the system and sub-system,” defence officials said.

I am highly awaiting for the launch of 120km advanced version of Pinaka, although ARDE has claim to have develop it, hopefully we will going to see first launch very soon. This high range MBRL has much more importance then current pinaka, since we can use 120km range rockets as a short range Ballastic missiles, it will help us to target key cities of Pakistan like Lahore.

Indian defence scientists have successfully tested the Russian-manufactured Smerch (Tornado) Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).

At least five tests, which gauged flight stability, accuracy and consistency, were held at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur.

"The Smerch can launch 12 rockets at a time," a defence scientist told Express Buzz. "It is able to fire single rockets or salvo from two to all 12 rockets. A full salvo lasts 38 seconds."

The scientist also explained that the MLRS was capable of launching surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles. "The system can be integrated with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to provide a new dimension to artillery defence system," he added.

According to Army Technology, the 9K58 Smerch 300mm MLRS was designed to defeat soft and hard-skinned targets, artillery and missile systems. The MLRS fires a 300mm 9M55K rocket with a solid propellant rocket motor capable of a 20-70km range.

The 9M55K rocket, which measures 7.5m in length and weighs over 800kg, can be fitted with a warhead containing 72 HE-FRAG (High-Explosive Fragmentation) submunitions. Alternatively, the rocket is capable of handling a HE-FRAG separable unitary warhead as well as five Bazalt MOTIV-3F anti-armour submunitions.

It should be noted that the Indian Army test-fired a modernised Smerch-M system in 2002, which featured an automatic rocket preparing and launching system, along with an increased projectile range of up to 90km. X

I don't think Pinaka rockets will be employable as SRBMs they will be more in the class of Russian Smerch rockets than American ATACMS.

They will be rumouredly in 300mm+ class up from 214mm class of 40km Pinaka and the warheads will field submunitions akin to Smerch.

Lahore is easily under Pinaka and Smerch range though with 120km ranged Pinaka Islamabad will be in range from Baramullah, irresp no point in using either artillery system for attacking cities as their limited warheads which carry cluster bombs and mines as submunitions are designed for taking out armour, personnel, logistics, command and control sites. The war will be, initially at least, fought professionally and PGMs, and CMs will be used to target vital assets in cities to reduce civilan losses and artillery and Theater BMs will be used to target enemy military assets.

Modes of Operation

The launcher can operate in the following modes:

Autonomous mode. The launcher is fully controlled by a fire control computer (FCC). The microprocessor on the launcher automatically executes the commands received from the FCC, giving the operator the status of the system on displays and indicators.

Stand-alone mode: In this mode, the launcher is not linked to the FCC operator, and the operator at the console enters all the commands for laying of the launcher system and selection of firing parameters.

Remote mode: In this mode, a remote control unit carried outside the cabin up to a distance of about 200 m can be used to control the launcher system, the launcher site and to unload the fired rocket pods from the launcher.

Manual mode: All launcher operations including laying of the system and firing are manually controlled. This mode is envisaged in the situations where the microprocessor fails or where there is no power to activate the microprocessor-based operator’s console.

The Pinaka was tested in the Kargil conflict and proved its effectiveness. Since then it has been inducted into the Indian Army and series production has been ordered. The Pinaka MBRL is stated to be cheaper than other systems. It costs Rs 23 million per system compared to the M270 which costs Rs 195 million.

apparently the stats you posted belong to the 40km ranged Pinaka and not 120km ranged Pinaka (block 2?) in development and of which I am talking about ... :)

The ARDE is also working on an advanced version of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system (MBRLS), which will have an improved trajectory for the missile, he added.
Referring to Pinaka, he said, the army was already in the processing of raising two regiments of the Pinaka MBRLS after the same was successfully tested and cleared for induction in the armed forces the process is now on. "We are now improvising on the Pinaka's trajectory and demonstrations for the same are scheduled for 2011," he added.

Using advnaced Pinaka and Smerch rockets does makes lots of sense since we just want to annihiliate our enemy and not to devastate it completely by using BM. At the same time use of MBRL is quite cost effective as compared to BM since implication of BM is lot more then rockets. :sAni_monkey:

if we are developing a 120 kms ranged rocket,we should also integrate gps/ins/laser guidance into it just like other advanced mlrs systems around the world.I think china has a MLRS(cant remember the name maybe a90 or something) that fires upto 300 kms,and it is exporting it to pak,it is of higher calibre though

weren't the chinese using russian smerch? I highly doubt 300km is the range for the chinese reversed engineered pile of junk??

the ws2 advanced version has a 400mm rocket ranged at 200-350 kms
