This will be the most important part of the three tier Bmd.
Very important test. Now that we have had all the excitement of rockets going up (Mangalyaan GSLV et al), important to also get back to the business of stopping missiles raining down on our heads.

Pdv can be viewed in a defensive role but it also has an offensive role if you use your
Imagination.

PDV tests dates are given at least 10 times in past. God knows what is going on.
July turned to September turned to January.

Also PDV is a completely new missile. I don't see how one successful test can be sufficient to justify deployment as Saraswat implied earlier in the year.
still looking forward to seeing this baby fly.

The plan was:
  • Phase-I (2000km)
    • Endo-Atmospheric: AAD
    • Exo-Atmospheric: PAD
  • Phase-II (5000km)
    • Endo-Atmospheric: AD1
    • Exo-Atmospheric: AD2

In some reports it is said that PDV is replacement/upgrade for PAD. In other reports it is said that PDV belongs to Phase-II.

If PDV is a replacement for PAD, then it cannot be a part of Phase-II, and vice-versa. Which is it?

If PDV is part of Phase-II, then it is the new name for AD2. Where is AD1 then?

Pdv will complete phase 1 of Bmd phase 2 can then be started some radars already tested for phase 2.
Also do not know where ashwin will fit in?

Bmd is ineffective against cruise missiles? What makes you say this?
cruise missiles fly horizontal to the ground and close to the ground - usually at subsonic speeds. BMD is for missiles which follow a sub orbital ballistic trajectory travelling at Mach 4 plus. Even the second stage of BMD cannot hit below 15km height.

Yes, it was, but it is still 5-7 yrs away.

Meanwhile India is really interested in David's Sling for Anti-CM. With 70-250 km op range, 6 batteries along the northern and western borders, and 5 batteries along the China border is what they are probably looking for.

India is anyway creating a much more advanced version of US' JLENS. JLENS operates at 3km altitude, whereas DRDO's Nakshatra will operate at 5km with 450km detection range and 1ton payload. The next one being developed would operate at 10km altitude with even higher payload and range.

Maitri was suppose to play a part against cruise missiles

Is this BMD capable of defeating cruise missiles?????
bmd is definately capable of defeating cruise missile threats in terms of speed and manuverability though in terms of detection it will require other air force assets like awacs, uav, low level radars satellite recon etc.the present programme is to build a credible bmd system mainly to intercept pakistani irbm's of upto 2.5k km range and in the next phase it will be capable of intercepting chinese icbms of 5-6k km range.the cruise missile defence with deals subsonic, supersonic, hypersonic cruise missiles as well as stealth fighters and uavs etc is an offshoot of the bmd programme and will require additional surveillance assets and software upgrade to the present system which the drdo is actively working on as illustrated by the following:
