On a lighter note:
T-90s may have thousand problems and shortcomings, but unko maaf kar do..galti ho jaate hai..when it comes to Indian products - kitna dete hain? Kitne mein aate hain?
Long live the brown sahibs of our army and our Imported Air Force - they are customers and customer is King, even when they pay with tax payers' money.
Benefits of indigenization - who cares?
IP rights - nehi chahiye.
Ability to upgrade continuously - kyun pareshan karte ho bhai
Forex savings - Bhai mujhse kya matlab hai. National security hai. Kharcha to karna parega.
Spend on RnD - Ye Saab chaye pe charcha karke Kya hoga. Point par ao.
Foreign maal - Abh Aya na point par..
I could have added few more, If it was written in English , well

When Pakistan rolls T 80 from Ukraine , Our Army guys have no option but to get what Russia offers, with lot of kickbacks and shits , When they know Russia fucked us with that monkey T 90 , we again have no option but just to buy in numbers and overwhelm Pakistani Tank coloumn

The main issue here is, Our idiotic Military officers and Think tanks have no idea to counter the enemy even before they adopt new fighting option , This was proven again and again, Once the enemy brings new attack method or inducted new technology , then only we ask DRDO to make similar one or buy from foregin,

We all saw what happend post Balakot strike, still we are handicapped infront of PAF

Sir, you are at right point.
I have heard even army generals in the media forum saying "we need indigenous products" but all of them are retired(those who I heard).
But,still I get perplexed when this type of favor of import happen.
ONE of them is saying a lie, either OUR PRODUCTS REALLY DON'T PASS THE TRIALS or someone else does not want it.
Anyway, can I use your post in other forums. It is really good in sarcasm and right sarcasm.
I've heard from many served officials, that the testing items and initial products are in good quality, while they start delivering in large numbers, the quality sucks

Just think how many guys we lost cuz of fault Mines developed by our DPSU's, are they accountable for the crime that they committed

Well for that I think quality assurance must be done.
Just few months before there was news na how armed forces were not satisfied with qualities and then government made some decision.

Dont worry about pak armour..most of it is old junk t55 upgrades...t80ud and al khalid only modern types. We have twice the number of t90s than both combined.Apache..cbu 105 anti armour cluster bombs..is enough for them.
Kornets are kept for china though small in number..and 464 t90ms are coming for LAC because they have relikt and can fire better svinets1 apfsds with 750 mm pen at 2km rather than current 500-550mm with mango on t90s which is enough for pakis.
We have enough breathing space to develop indigeneous options.
Sounds nice, we have enough option to counter the PA armours, So is it time to stop buying more T90 and invest the amount in FMBT program

whats the reason to waste around 13,000 cr for just 464 Tanks, are the govt and army officials are idiots or kinda corrupted asses

see, we just buy the old platforms , once Pakistan induct newer generation tank , then only we wake up and invest in FMBT ,

Very interesting.......:pound::pound::pound:

What is "nation First" ? I suppose security of nation first than the security of PSUs and DRDO.
What is national interest ? When it comes to modernisation vs third class indigenisation, which one serves the nation better ?
You say Chinese products are poor quality ? It means your products are much superior to defeat Chinese mal. Which one is that ? Name a few .... including prices.

Is not PSU and DRDO paying money to foreign firms when a product is only of 20-30 indigenous component ?

Is there a competition between MoD and PSUs as to who will make payment to foreign company / country ? (thereby who will get commissions) ?

To sara jhagada ye hai ????:pound::pound::pound:
realistic , Agreed , all peoples are defending the corrputed DPSU in the name of indeginsation

Na, they want three man crew tank that is 50 to 54 tons fully loaded.
After so much discussion on arjun tank this is the path army is choosing.

K2 is a 55 Tons with three man crew ... South Koreans are open to technology transfer unlike what we have seen with the Russians did with T-90 transfers...

K2 can be quickly Indianized as per IA requirement... We have good experience with K9 ...

else we have to go for a new Tank design probably with Israel and that will be another 15 years ...

Indian Army it seems has made up it mind for not to accept a 60 / 65 Tons Arjun Mark 2 ...

One hear that DRDO is working on a lighter Arjun Mark - 3 with a three man crew and re designed turret ... that will bring down the weight to 55 tons...

Our real problem is poor project management ... In next 10 years we have to bring down the import content to 10 - 15 % max else we will continue to pay a high import bill ..

#Indian Army inducts limited number of Israeli 'tank killers’ till DRDO develops indigenous ones

.

Indian infantry soldiers now finally have a new weapon to destroy advancing enemy tanks on the western front with Pakistan.

The Army has begun to induct a limited number of Israeli Spike anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) to meet immediate operational requirements till the indigenous man-portable “tank killers” being developed by DRDO are ready for induction.

Sources on Thursday said the “first lot” of the 210 Spike missiles, with a dozen launchers, “arrived in India about 10 days ago” as part of the “Army vice chief’s emergency procurement powers” exercised by the force amidst the ongoing heightened tensions with Pakistan.

The Army moved to buy the initial amount of the fire-and-forget Spike ATGMs, which have a strike range of up to 4-km, for around Rs 280 crore after the Jaish-e-Muhammed training facility at Balakot in Pakistan was bombed by Indian Mirage-2000 fighters on February 26.

“The order will be repeated if the man-portable ATGM being developed by DRDO is not ready by next year. We don’t want to be slowed down any longer in plugging our critical operational deficiencies by DRDO,” said an Army source.

DRDO, however, is quite confident about offering its MP-ATGM for “user trials” in 2020 after having conducted three successful trials of the weapon system at the Kurnool range in Andhra Pradesh in early last month.

“The third-generation MP-ATGM, which has state-of-the-art infrared imaging seekers along with advanced avionics, hit the targets mimicking operational tanks in top-attack mode to destroy them with precision at 2.5 km range,” said a DRDO official.

Whether it’s indigenous or Israeli man-portable “tank killers”, the fact remains the 13-lakh strong Army has an alarming over 50% shortage in its “authorised holding” of different kinds of shoulder, vehicle and helicopter-launched ATGMs, which are crucial to halt advancing enemy tanks in the plains as well as “bunker-bursting” across the volatile line of control with Pakistan.

The Army’s existing second-generation Milan-2T (2-km range) and Konkurs (4-km) ATGMs, produced by defence PSU Bharat Dynamics under licence from French and Russian companies, do not have night-fighting capabilities.

The Army for well over a decade has been clamouring to upgrade from these wire-guided ATGMs to third and fourth-generation ones that are top-attack, fire-and-forget and night-capable. In late 2017, India had scrapped a proposed Rs 3,200 crore deal for 8,356 Spike missiles, 321 launchers and 15 simulators that had been first approved by the Defence Acquisitions Council in June 2009.

This was primarily because the DRDO said it could deliver a more technologically advanced MP-ATGM in the next two-three years, as was then reported by TOI. The Army is now keeping its fingers crossed, keen as it is on equipping all its over 380 infantry battalions and 44 mechanised infantry units with third and fourth-generation ATGMs in the long run.

Indian Army successfully test-fires Spike LR missile at Infantry School Madhya Pradesh
The firing was witnessed by the top Infantry hierarchy of the Indian Army, including the Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat, who were all at Mhow for the annual Infantry Commanders' Conference.

New Delhi: The Indian Army has successfully test-fired two newly-acquired Spike LR (long-range) anti-tank missiles at the Infantry School at Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.

The firing was witnessed by the top Infantry hierarchy of the Indian Army, including the Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat, who were all at Mhow for the annual Infantry Commanders' Conference.

Spike LR is a fourth generation missile that can engage a target with precision at ranges up to four km.

In addition to fire and forget capability, the missile also has the ability to fire, observe and update, providing substantial flexibility to the firer to pinpoint the impact point, as also the ability to switch to a different target mid-flight, should he want to do so. The firer also has the option to fire from either low or high trajectory.

The missile has an inbuilt seeker, which gives the firer the flexibility to use any of two modes: Day (CCD) and Night (IIR). The dual seeker adds to the missile's reliability, already established at more than 90 per cent during the field evaluation by the Indian Army in 2011.

Since the induction and training, this was the first time that soldiers from the Indian Army carried out practice firing of the missile. The confidence of the firers in the missile was such that difficult firing scenarios were deliberately selected.

This included firing into the sun with CCD, and firing with IIR without any heating of the target, using only the ambient temperature difference. All missiles successfully engaged the target.

As of date, more than 5,000 Spike missiles have been fired worldwide, with the overall hit percentage being more than 95 per cent.

For the last nearly three decades, the Indian Army has been using now-outdated second generation missiles. The need to replace the inventory with third generation missiles was recognized nearly ten years ago.

Consequently, in 2011, an RFP was floated for more than 8,000 missiles with transfer of technology to Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). The Spike missile was the only one to qualify after going through the complex labyrinth of the Indian procurement process, and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) even completed the negotiation in 2016.

The programme, however, did not see the light of the day as the government decided in favour of indigenous development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Since then, while there seems to have been some progress on the DRDO development programme, it will take a long time for it to reach the user in the field.

To overcome this critical capability void, the Indian Army procured a limited quantity of Spike LR missiles, so as to meet the urgent operational requirement. India became the 33rd country to have the Spike missile as part of its inventory.

Far better than DRDO missile: Israel's Rafael makes strong pitch for Spike
In January 2018, India had cancelled a $500-million purchase of Spike LR missiles just two weeks before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was to ink the deal on a visit to New Delhi

On Wednesday, the Indian Army successfully test-fired the Israeli Spike LR anti-tank guided missile (ATGM), which can home in on, and destroy, enemy tanks at ranges up to 4 km.

On Thursday, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which builds the Spike, boldly stated: “With confidence in the Spike missile established, the Indian Army may need to revisit their plans” to develop an Indian anti-tank missile.

This is an unusually bold statement, since foreign vendors usually tread softly around New Delhi’s sensibilities and avoid giving procurement advice.

In January 2018, India had cancelled a $500-million purchase of Spike LR missiles just two weeks before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was to ink the deal on a visit to New Delhi. Army chief General Bipin Rawat said at that time that the purchase was cancelled because the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was going to develop and supply an indigenous ATGM.

Since the DRDO missile would be ready only by 2022, “the Indian Army procured a limited quantity of Spike LR missiles, so as to meet the urgent operational requirement”, said Rafael in a press release on Thursday.

Two of these ATGMs were fired at Mhow on Wednesday. Witnessed by top infantry generals, including Rawat, both struck their targets.

Encouraged by that success, Rafael now claims the DRDO’s missile will be only a ‘third-generation’ ATGM, while the Spike LR is a fourth-generation missile.

“Both the DRDO’s ATGM programme, as well as the invitation to Indian industry to develop a 3rd Gen missile will need a rethink, as having a 4th Gen missile will put the plan for development of a 3rd Gen missile questionable,” stated Rafael’s unusually forthright statement.

The Israeli firm explained why its ATGM was better than what the DRDO is developing. “Spike LR is a 4th Gen missile, which (has) fire and forget capability (that does not require the firer to keep the enemy tank in his cross hairs until impact). The missile also has the ability to… switch to a different target mid-flight, should he want to do so.”

Rafael argued that the Spike LR’s inbuilt seeker allows the firer to engage tanks by both day and night. “The dual seeker adds to the missile’s reliability, already established at more than 90 per cent during the field evaluation by the Indian Army in 2011. As of date, more than 5000 Spike missiles have been fired so far worldwide, with the overall hit percentage being more than 95 per cent”, claimed Rafael.

India is the 33rd country to have the Spike missile as part of its inventory.

For decades now, the army’s infantry (foot-soldiers) units have been equipped with 2nd Gen missiles like the French MILAN, which had a range of under 2.5 km.

In 2011, the defence ministry floated a tender for 321 ATGM launchers and 8,356 missiles worth an estimated $500 million (~3,600 crore).

Rafael was required to discharge offsets worth 30 per cent of that value and to transfer technology to Bharat Dynamics for building 30,000 more Spike missiles in India.

Over the preceding two years, Rafael has strengthened its case by putting in place the tools to manufacture the Spike LR in India, in a joint venture (JV) with the Kalyani Group in Hyderabad. “The JV is capable of manufacturing Spike missiles in India, and will also look at export opportunities from India”, stated Rafael on Thursday.

By 2016, Spike LR had cleared user trials and the defence ministry had completed price negotiations. At the last minute, however, the government decided in favour of indigenous manufacture.

Now, with the DRDO programme under way and reportedly making good progress, Rafael has moved boldly to make its case for the Spike.
