Three militants killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir

Three militants were killed today in the three-day old operation launched by security forces in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. "Three militants have been killed so far in the operation that was launched on August 6," an Army spokesman said. He said three weapons and some ammunition have also been recovered from the scene of the encounter. "The operation is still in progress to ensure that all the militants, if any remaining, in the area are neutralised," he added. An Army jawan was killed in the initial firefight between the security forces and the militants.

Lance Naik Bharat Kumar Chhetri has been awarded the Shaurya Chakra, the third highest peacetime gallantry award, for killing two members of Pakistan's notorious Border Action Team along the Line of Control (LoC).

IAF's Wg Cdr Huvey Upadhyay was given the award for saving lives of two Army pilots whose ALH Dhruv helicopter had crashed in the Siachen Glacier along with two Navy officers Lt Cdrs Manoranjan Kumar and Kapish Muwal who died while saving the crew of INS Sindhuratna submarine in February.

The 31-year-old Major's buddy Sepoy Vikram Singh and two naval officers who died on board the INS Sindhuratna while trying to save fellow sailors, are among 12 others who have been awarded the Shaurya Chakra. This year's list of 55 gallantry awards also includes 39 Sena (Army) Medals, one Nao Sena (Navy) Medal and two Vayu Sena (Air Force) Medal.

Militant Killed in Encounter

SRINAGAR: A militant was killed today in an encounter with Army near the Line of Control in Tangdhar sector of Kashmir's Kupwara district. "The troops along LoC in Tangdhar sector observed some suspicious movement past midnight. On being challenged, the militant opened fire at Army positions which was retaliated," an Army spokesman said here. He said a militant was killed in the brief exchange of gunfire and an AK rifle was recovered from the spot. The spokesman said it was not clear yet whether the slain militant was infiltrating from or exhilarating to Pakistan occupied Kashmir. The operation is still in progress to look for any more militants in the area, he added.

August 19, 2014: The Indian Army and National Aerospace Laboratory have come together to solve an age-old nuisance: the primitive type of marksmanship training, the manual system which involves the marksman firing shots at a target and then having to walk up to the target, sometimes more than 300 metres, and identifying the accuracy of his shot. The Experimental Aerodynamics Division at National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore and the Indian Army's Simulator Development Division, Secunderabad, have put their heads together and developed a state-of-the-art Location of Bullet on Target System (LOBOTS) named DHVANI (Detection and Hit Visualization using Acoustic 'N'- wave Identification) to ease the process of marksmanship training by by accurately determining the location of bullet impact and providing real-time feedback to the shooter. According to NAL, "Marksmanship training systems available from advanced countries for sale are mostly based on 1980s technology. Further they have exorbitant cost of ownership since they are not customized for the Indian environment and necessitate expensive after-sales service due to the black-box approach of the manufacturers. The need was to develop a modern indigenous system which is tailor made to meet the requirements of the Indian Army at a cost lower than similar systems available elsewhere without compromising the performance. The system has undergone rigorous field trials at Army ranges in Bangalore, Secunderabad and Infantry School Mhow. The formal handing over of DHVANI by Director CSIR-NAL to Commandant SDD Secunderabad took place on July 03, 2014."

India plans US$10bn mountain strike corps to counter China

India is building a new 620-billion-rupee (US$10 billion) mountain strike corps to counter China along the China-India border in the northeastern part of the country, according to a report from the New Delhi-based Hindustan Times.

The report said General Dalbir Singh Suhag, Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army, is set to visit the Kolkata-based Eastern Command before the end of the month to track the progress of the new 17 Corps, which is being set up to counter China's reconnaissance and intelligence along the 4,057-kilometer Line of Actual Control (LAC) between the two countries. The corps is likely to be operational by 2022, the report said, adding that it is expected to reduce China's combat power advantage over India from the current ratio of 3:1 to 2.1:1.

Singh, who recently completed a tour along the the disputed LAC in the sensitive Ladakh area of India-controlled Jammu and Kashmir, has also served as an inspector general in a covert China-centric unit comprising Tibetan soldiers called the Special Frontier Force, the report added.

Additionally, India is seeking greater opportunities for defense cooperation with the US in the development and production of modern weapons systems, the report said, though plans to buy 145 BAE Systems M777 ultra-light howitzers from the US for the 17 Corps have stagnated due to the high cost.

The Tribune, another English-language Indian daily newspaper, has also reported that India is ramping up military defenses in Jammu and Kashmir after Beijing "ringed the area" with six airfields, fighter jets and special forces. As part of the movie, New Delhi will reportedly move an armored brigade of 150 T-72 tanks to Ladakh and deploy Smerch multi-barrel rocket launch units — which are capable of hitting targets 70-80km away — at key locations.

The Indian media reports were published shortly before new claims that Chinese troops crossed what New Delhi perceived to be its side of the LAC before entering 25-30km deep into in Burtse area of north Ladakh on Sunday. India reportedly despatched a quick reaction team to the site but the Chinese troops refused to budge. A spokesperson from the Indian army downplayed the incident by saying that there are areas along the border where India and China have differing perceptions of the LAC.

Zhao Gancheng, director of the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies at the Shanghai Institute for International Studies, told China's nationalistic tabloid Global Times that India's bolstering of defenses along border comes as no surprise. Due to significant differences in perception over the LAC, Chinese and Indian troops have had many confrontations in the area in the past, Zhao said, though it is clear that recent actions from New Delhi are not in the interests of Sino-India relations.

JAMMU: Army troops today killed a foreign militant in an encounter in North Kashmir. There was an encounter after militants opened fire on a Army patrol party in Handwara belt of Kashmir Valley, a Defence spokesman said. In the encounter, one foreign militant has been killed, the spokesman said. Further details are awaited.

Lashker-e-Taiba commander killed in gunbattle in north Kashmir

JAMMU: A top Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) foreign militant was killed in a gunbattle on Tuesday with troops in Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir. Based on specific intelligence input about presence of a terrorist in general area Laribag, a search operation was launched by the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) unit located in Handwara area, a defence spokesman said. The area was cordoned off and the terrorist was effectively engaged, he said, adding that in the ensuing firefight, the militant was killed at about 0600 hours. The terrorist has been identified as Umaar Bhatti, a LeT commander operating in Kashmir valley for the past 20 months, the spokesman said. An AK-47, a grenade and other war like stores were recovered from near his body, he added.

India on Thursday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni-I missile from a military base in Odisha, a defence official said.

The missile, which can strike a target 700 km away and can carry a one-tonne nuclear warhead, was tested by the armed forces as part of user trial from a facility on Wheeler Island near Dhamra in Bhadrak district, 170 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

"It was a perfect launch," director of the test range M V K V Prasad told IANS.

Agni is an intermediate range ballistic missile. It uses solid propulsion booster and a liquid propulsion upper stage, derived from India's first indigenously developed ballistic missile Prithvi

CHENNAI: Amidst the backdrop of bugle and drumbeats, 246 cadets from the Officers Training Academy marched into the ranks of Indian Army, at a passing out parade held on the academy campus here on Saturday. The young army lieutenants to be deployed across the country, including remote frontiers of Kashmir, Rajasthan and the North East, include 42 women. Twenty one cadets from abroad— 16 from Afghanistan, four from Seychelles and one from Lesotho in African union—also successfully completed the training course at the academy. Lieutenant General Philip Campose, vice chief of Army staff reviewed the parade and presented medals to meritorious cadets. Philip Campose said cadets should focus on keeping themselves updated on modern and technological developments in the military. Lt Gen SS Jog, commandant, OTA and Major General G Murali, deputy commandant and chief instructor of OTA were also present at the event. Cadet adjutant Maninder Pal Singh received the sword of honour for overall best performance while battalion under officer Preeti Mudela won the overall order of merit gold medal. Senior under officer Mokshita Singh got silver medal and academy under officer Chander Shekhar Guleria got the bronze medal for coming third in the batch. Family members and relatives of the cadets, senior Army officers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka were also present. The cadets who passed out from the academy also received certificates for the successful completion of post graduate diploma in defence management and strategic studies from University of Madras. As many as 20,400 officers have passed out in various short service commission courses from the Officers Training Academy.
