First batch of armoured ambulances rolled out:India

BY: PTI
The first batch of Ambulance Armoured Tracked Vehicles to be used by the Indian Army to evacuate casualties from the battlefield was rolled out at the Ordnance Factory here on Friday.
Designed by the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment , a branch of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and manufactured at the Ordnance Factory, Medak, the armoured ambulance is equipped to administer emergency medical care to battle casualties . It has in-built medical facilities including a continuous ECG monitoring, a ventilator, a suction unit to remove unwanted fluids, a DC refrigerator for preserving drugs and an air-conditioner with optional heating facility .
With the same mobility as an Infantry Combat Vehicle , the ambulance can cross a variety of terrains and even traverse through water. Features include a special blower and absorbent filter for nuclear, biological and chemical protection, and external and internal radio communication for navigation.
The seating capacity of 10 plus two includes medical attendants, but this can vary depending on the number of stretcher patients. Four stretcher patients, or two stretcher and four sitting patients, or eight sitting patients can be accommodated at a time.
Although the first model was ready in December 2005, it had to undergo several changes before a trial in September 2006. Three years and 56 modifications later, 10 vehicles were rolled out ready to be used by the Indian Army.
The Army has already ordered 288 armoured tracked ambulances. So far however, the Ordnance Factory has assembled only 50 such ambulances so that the army can recommend further changes, once the vehicles have been used in combat operations.
“You will get such large orders from the Indian army in the future that your machines will be running for the next 15 years,” Lieutenant General Duleep Bhardwaj, Director General Mechanised Forces said. He was there to receive the first ambulance on behalf of the Chief of Staff. Saroj Vinayek, Director General and Chairperson, Ordnance Factories Board was the chief guest .

City firms to roll out anti-bomb robot for Army soon

BY: The Indian Express Limited.
The first lot of DRDO’s bomb detection and disposal robot, Daksh, for the use of the Indian Army will roll out soon. City-based Dynalog India Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited and Theta Control are in the process of manufacturing Daksh, a two-foot-high, remote-operated, battery-run vehicle that weighs 350 kg and is designed to detect and defuse Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).
After the Army had placed orders for 20 robots in March, DRDO has been trying to sell the concept to security agencies like the National Security Guard and the police, as a tool to fight terror. “In the last two months the Mumbai Police and the CRPF have been showing interest,” said Alok Mukherjee, DRDO scientist at the Research and Development Establishment (Enggrs) and a key member of the Daksh team.
Daksh can be used in urban areas and country terrain. It can be used against militants in J&K and the North East as well as against Naxalites in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and other states, said Mukherjee. DRDO believes Daksh will be of use to paramilitary forces, the Airports Authority of India and Indian Railways to secure their areas.
“With this technology, we would be able to do what the US is doing with the drones in Afghanistan,” said Ajit Kavishwar, Director, Dynalog.
“Daksh can handle IEDs, take it out of a crowded place and scan the device with its X-ray component to confirm if the device is an IED. If it is a bomb, the on-board water-jet disrupter can defuse it,” Mukherjee said.
Daksh can lift a weight of 20 kg from a distance of around 3 metre. When operated on wireless mode, the robot can be controlled from a distance of 500 metre. “As compared to an imported model, an indigenously developed robot would be easy to maintain and can cater to Indian terrain,” said a BEL representative. “All the three companies together would be able to supply two robots a month; the first will take four months to make,” he added.
For many security agencies that may find the cost, Rs 1.75 crore, somewhat high, DRDO says they are in the process of devising a smaller version.

Joint exercise to feature largest deployment of US Stryker vehicles

Monday , Aug 24, 2009

The biggest joint Army training exercise between India and US set to take place in October this year will also feature the largest-ever deployment of America’s modern Stryker Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs) outside Iraq and Afghanistan.

The mammoth exercise, involving close to 300 US Army personnel, will also be the first-ever mechanised infantry exercise between the two countries. It will involve 17 Stryker ICVs from the 25th Infantry Division of the US Army.

Unlike earlier exercises, which have been restricted to infantry troops and typically involved close to 100 soldiers from each side, the ‘Yudh Abhyas’ exercise taking place at the Babina firing ranges near Jhansi will significantly take up the interoperability of the two armies.
While deliberations on the theme and scope of the exercise are still on, it would either be an anti-terror war game or a simulated UN peacekeeping mission. “It is a step forward in the military relationship. A series of smaller exercises have given us the confidence of managing one of such a scale,” a senior official said. This would be the second Indo-US Army training exercise this year after the ‘Shatrujeet’ exercise that took place in Belgaum in January. The two nations will also engage in an air exercise. The latest edition of the Cope India series of air force war games is set to take place in October.

The US Air Force will bring its C-17 heavy transport aircraft as well as the smaller C-130 J aircraft for the exercise. While India is keen to see the C-130 J, which have already been ordered by the IAF and are likely to be delivered by 2011, it has also expressed interest in the C-17 for an upcoming tender for transport planes.

While the two countries have been holding regular naval exercises since the late 1990s, training exercises between the two land forces started a few years ago. Besides the annual ‘Shatrujeet’ series of anti-terror exercises, several other training programs have also been scheduled.

Indian troops had gone to Alaska in March last year for a counter-terror war game that got mired in a controversy after two soldiers from the Gorkha regiment disappeared from the barracks in an apparent illegal migration scheme. Later last year, a high-profile exercise between the Indian and American Special Forces were carried out in Mizoram Army’s famous Vairangte Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School.

Forces to get own mobile sat network

Forces to get own mobile sat network
Shalini Singh, TNN 24 August 2009, 03:01am IST

NEW DELHI: To augment its strategic communications infrastructure, government is proposing to build a state-of-the-art mobile satellite network for the dedicated use of the armed forces, Indian Railways and Safety of Life services.

The Department of Space (DoS) has sent a detailed note to the Cabinet secretary, principal secretary to the PM and to the empowered group of ministers (EGoM) on spectrum warning that this fresh requirement for an exclusive satellite network will reduce the quantum of spectrum that can be offered for the upcoming Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) auctions that are to be held along with the 3G auctions.

Pointing to the strategic importance and urgency of the satellite network project, the note warns that the satellite network will operate in the globally accepted S Band (2,500 to 2,690 MHz), but that detailed analysis now revealed that it may not be possible to release the entire committed 40 MHz of spectrum in this band for BWA auctions.

DoS explains that the characteristics of WiMax (based on BWA standard) to be auctioned in India show that it will severely constrain the operation of satellite services through harmful interference. Interference in adjacent bands will not only make the deployment of spectrum inefficient for both commercial as well as military use, but more importantly, will affect national security.

Before the auction process the technical characteristics of WiMax transmission should be specified in such a way that they will not affect satellite services. Due to this requirement, quantum of available spectrum for WiMax operations may become less, the DoS note cautions.

DoS further says the S Band was retained by Isro after prolonged negotiations with other countries and then registered with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

International registration requires a long and difficult coordination process, it says. Apart from this, the S Band is a global specification for satellite services in order to create adequate volumes to enable firms to produce equipment.

The strategic defence and safety of life priorities as well as the DoS's lucid and technically specific arguments are likely to override the government's and operator's commercial interests. This fresh development, unless resolved quickly, also promises to delay the BWA auctions to next year.

Demolition of historical monument sparks controversy

STAFF WRITER 23:43 HRS IST
Kannur (Kerala), Aug 23 (PTI) The demolition of a historical monument by army authorities here today sparked off a controversy with the public and political parties demanding its restoration.

The monument at the 'Vilakkunthara maidanam', situated in an open ground in the Cantontment area here, was demolished by army authorities this morning.

Senior army officials were unavailable for comments.

Sources in the Cantonment area, where the 122 Batalion of the Territorial Army and a unit of Defence Security Corps is located, said that the monument was demolished to pave way for widening road network.

The monument stood witness to crucial moments of freedom struggle after it came into being in 1918 and people used to light a lantern every day at the open ground to pay tribute to freedom fighters.

It later came under a trust floated in memory of freedom fighters and an electric light replaced the lantern.

The development of MSMC is a part of the Indian small arms system (INSAS) programme created by ARDE to build an indigenous small arms weapons system for India.
DDM ?
Shouln't be F-INSAS Futuristic Infantry Soldier As a System ?
Both are different terminology, one is stated for the indian small arms development program- INSAS,

while other is for India's future solider/ mordernisation of Infantary soilders-F-INSAS( not to be confused with INSAS) ---but F-INSAS soilder will carry a version of the INSAS rifle :D

3 Indian Armymen charged

NEW DELHI, Aug. 22: The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed its chargesheet in the coffin scam of the Kargil war. The agency has charged three senior Army officials and a US national in the chargesheet filed before the Patiala House court on August 19.

According to sources, the name of the then defence minister George Fernandes has not been mentioned in the chargesheet. The three Indian Army officers who have been named in the chargesheet include Major General Arun Roy (Retd), Colonel F.B. Singh and Colonel S.K. Malik (Retd).

The case relates to purchase of aluminium caskets, which was later rejected. The US National Victor Baiza, which supplied the aluminium caskets and body bags, had reportedly obtained payment against the LOC (letter of credit) which caused a loss of Rs 89 lakhs.

Talking to this newspaper, a high-ranking official of the CBI said, "The ministry of defence had imported substandard caskets and body bags in 1999-2000 at the exorbitant rate which caused loss to the tune of Rs 89 lakhs." The agency had registered a case in 2006 under Sections 120 B (Criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating) and Prevention of Corruption Act.

The agency sleuths also found during investigation that the accused Army officials showed haste before the Kargil war broke out. In 2007, US officials reportedly confirmed that Baiza was not a manufacturer of aluminium caskets. The CBI chargesheet added that Baiza purchased these caskets at $1,559 per casket and supplied the same to the Indian Army for $2,500 (approximately Rs 1.20 lakhs).

India artillery upgrade stuck, Pak gets howitzers from US

Tuesday , Aug 25, 2009

India’s artillery modernisation has been stuck due to scam scares ever since the Bofors scandal but Pakistan has gone ahead, equipping its army with the latest guns that now threaten to give it an edge over the Indian Army.

While India has not received even a single new artillery gun in the last two decades, Pakistan recently received a batch of 67 self-propelled artillery guns from the US using War against Terror funds granted by Washington.

Latest United Nations data reveal that delivery of the M-109 A5 self-propelled artillery guns took place last year. The guns were transferred under the US Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme that was granted to Pakistan for the fight against militant groups on its border with Afghanistan.

Experts say these M-109 A5 155 mm howitzers give Pakistan a definite conventional edge over the Indian Army that is years away from induction of similar systems. The most modern guns in the Indian Army are the Bofors that were procured in the 1980s.“While the Indian Army modernisation is getting nowhere, Pakistan is steadily modernising not only its artillery but other arms and services as well. This will lead to erosion in India’s conventional superiority if not checked immediately,” said Brigadier Gurmeet Kanwal, a former artillery officer, who heads the Army’s think tank, Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS).

In the Nineties, the Indian Army had put forward a requirement for guns similar to the ones that Pakistan has now got. While the plan took off in 1999, it got scrapped after eight years of trials after South African firm Denel was blacklisted by the government. Israel’s Soltham and Singapore Technologies, the other artillery giants, have also been blacklisted by the government

British austerity: Army chief treated Kapoor to £5-meal

Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor was served cheap wine and food at an official reception hosted by his counterpart in London to cut government expenses, a scrutiny into records of money spent by top UK officials on entertainment of foreign dignitaries has revealed.

Official records, obtained by British tabloid News of the World under the Freedom of Information Act, show that General Kapoor and senior officials including Indian High Commissioner Shiv Mukherjee were “treated” to a £-5.15-per-head meal at a reception hosted at Kensington Palace by Armed Forces chief General Sir Richard Dannatt.

General Kapoor, it seems, was served a meal consisting of “pastry, cheese and salmon” that was bought off the shelf from a mass retail chain during his tour of the UK in August last year. Total expenses on the reception, including 23 guests, came to £123.58

While expenses of politicians, including money claimed as food expenses, have kicked up a row, this is the first time that money spent by the armed forces chief have been made public. While Dannatt incurred official expenses of £19,290.77, Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth claimed £130,817 in expenses

Ex Indian envoy defends frugal meal served by UK Army chief - Indians Abroad - World - NEWS - The Times of India

LONDON: Describing General Richard Dannatt as a "gracious host," former Indian envoy to UK said the meal served to Indian Army chief General Deepak
Kapoor by his British counterpart last year, was "wonderful" after a tabloid reported that the guests were offered a "fiver-a-head cut-price meal".

The then Indian High Commissioner Shiv Mukherjee said the food was "wonderful" and General Dannatt was a "gracious host," defending the frugal meal served to the Army Chief and 21 others at a reception hosted in August last year.

"It was an excellent party and Dannatt was a wonderful host," Mukherjee told PTI, when asked to react to the media report.

"It was an elegant and very, very enjoyable party. It was a wonderful party. Mrs Dannatt and the chief of army staff were gracious hosts and they made us personally welcome. The food was wonderful," he said.

His remarks came following a report in The Daily Mail that said "rather than serving delicacies from the nearby upmarket Harrods superstore, they (Indian Army chief General Deepak Kapoor and 21 others) were served pastries, cheese and salmon bought from the supermarket Tesco".

The entire meal had cost a mere 123.58 pounds - or 5.15 pounds per person, the tabloid said, lauding the British army chief for his frugality.

Indian Army sees no threat from Chinese build-up along border- Hindustan Times

Indian troops are on a high state of vigil along the frontier with China and the infrastructure build-up on the other side does not pose a threat, a top Indian Army commander said on Wednesday.

"The Chinese infrastructure across the LAC (Line of Actual Control) does not pose any threat to us," Lt. Gen PC Bhardwaj, the general officer commanding-in-chief of the strategic Northern Command that guards India's borders with China and Pakistan, told reporters at its headquarters in Udhampur, 70 km from Jammu and Kashmir's winter capital Jammu.

To specific questions about China's emerging strength and its activities across the 646 LAC in Kashmir, Bhardwaj said that these were not causing any undue concern as "our troops are also maintaining maximum vigil all over".

Indian And Chinese Armies Clash

Indian and Chinese armies have reportedly been locked in sporadic exchanges of fire across the Nathu-La border in Sikkim, 54 km east of Gangtok.
A senior defence ministry official in Kolkata, where the Eastern Command is based, said the conflict had been on since Tuesday night. In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of Defence, however, denied any shooting on the border.

The Kolkata based defence official, who refused to be identified, said, "The gun battle intensified during the early hours of Wednesday. There are, however, no reports of any deaths or serious injuries."

He said although India had not deployed any additional forces in the area, all civilian traffic had been stopped. But the ministry statement said roads had been closed in the area because of landslides.

The official said, "The skirmishes caused concern as both sides recently reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen the existing relationship at a special joint meeting on August 15."

Situated at 14,140 feet, Nathula reopened for trade in 2006, which had stopped in 1962 following the Sino-Indian War
