Are the underpowered Gypsys safe and speedy enough to rush an Army QRT towards an ambush zone of high tech terrorists of today???

Yes Gypsy is not a suitable vehicle for high risk area. Why Army is not buying Mahindra Axe etc. in big numbers??

Tata is not allowed to move technology of JLR from UK to India. That was one of the conditions to preserve their intellectual property.

If the army has to acquire Land Rovers, it will have to import from the UK.

Tata is not allowed to move technology of JLR from UK to India. That was one of the conditions to preserve their intellectual property.

These gypsies should be replaced ASAP.. Are Indians getting emotional with this car. It makes the IA seem outdated. Bring in the safari or the scorpio would make the job easier and safer. Gypsies are totally vulnerable. I think the Safari or XUV 500 would be the best for the job,and upgrades in the IA like replacing vehicles and weapons with newer ones will be able to attract more young men to serve in the armg.

no Toyota fortuner is look beautiful than the said above, what's the problem in you guys , every one looks for a shiny new vehicles, earlier some one comes with Stryker, Now XUV 500

Because it's completely analog. It uses an analog fuel injection and engine management, and can withstand an EMP. A modern vehicle with electronic engine management will turn into paperweight after an EMP attack. It's the same reason why senior officers still use petrol Ambassadors, with analog engines. 1. they're immune to EMP, 2. they don't trust engine electronics (ECUs) sourced from China.

Even a shuddh-desi Tata Indica eV2 with Indian Tata CR4 engine uses a Chinese-made ECU. The ARM SoCs on those ECUs could very well have a surreptitious GPS module. All it takes is a ping to a Chinese satellite masquerading as a GPS sat, to give away your pos.

True, the Gypsy only needs a structural upgrade, i.e lower weight, redesign of structure for better off-road performance, newer suspension, a new analog engine with double the HP, powerful LED lights, a night vision sight for night driving without lights for SF units, newer gen upgrades to old analog tech is good enough as well. Weapon mounts, easy mounts for add ons like vehicle GPS, Battlefield management systems, comm radios.

NEW DELHI: The Army will replace its iconicMaruti Gypsy fleet with a new range of SUVs, having selected the Tata Safari Storme for an initial order of close to 3,200 vehicles, which could increase 10-fold in the coming years.

While an official announcement is yet to be made, ET has learnt that Tata Motorsbeat off the Mahindra Group, which fielded its Scorpio SUV for thecompetition that kicked off in 2013. Both locally developed SUVs passed rigorous technical trials by the army, which tested the vehicles in all conditions – from high-altitude, snow-bound regions to deserts and marshy land.

However, the Tata Group appears to have presented a better financial deal to the army, which has sought to replace its fleet of Gypsyvehicles that are used extensively at the battalion level to transport troops and officers.

The army has over 30,000 Maruti Gypsyvehicles in service and willprogressively replace them starting next year. “The initial order is for 3,198 new SUVs but the total number is likely to go much beyond that. The army prefers a single model across its units and formations as it is easier on logistics,” an official involved in the process told ET.

While the Gypsy has been an army favourite for its ability to navigate tough terrain, the need was felt for a new SUV with additional safety features and more power that runs on diesel, a fuel that’s more readily available, given its large fleet of trucks and heavy-duty vehicles.

Once signed, this will be the second major order for Tata Motors this year, having bagged a Rs 1,300 crore deal in January to supply high-mobility military trucks for the army. The 6x6 high-mobility vehicles can be used for various purposes – from transporting men and material to being the platform for multi-barrel rocket launchers and surface-to-air missile systems.

it's mahindra axe..... it's a prototype. going throughout trials. army will select one or two models of vehicle in long term.
