Won the competition over Mahindra Scorpio.





Even though I am a big fan of TATA Safari but still feel more modern and better options are available now;Tata Hexa could have been a better option in the similar budget range:





Correction, Gypsy out for the General Staff Vehicle role but it will very much remain in tactical roles for the time being (sadly). The Gypsy was used as a one fit all solution for pretty much every role the Indian armed forces required (GSV, LSV, utility, recce etc etc).

Now the IA is rightly segmenting its roles and going for specialised vehicles according to role instead of going for a single solution so the GSV role (carrying officers and other support work) will be done by the Safari Storme, the Light strike role will be tendered for seperately as will the special forces strike vehicle. So there will be 3-4 different vehicles replacing the Gypsy.

Those are some tiny wheels for an SUV, it also looks kind of unstable cornering at high speeds with a high center of gravity.

Rear is the only part of the car which seems to have been modified for military use. The fuel can is totally perplexing. The tow hook is definitely useful though.

Sumo 4x4 in IA. Note the bullet proof doors and jamming equipment on one of them. Or are those Mahindra Rakshaks?

What is the bullet proof protection level...mean what type of rounds can it stop..?
The armoring can withstand an attack from AK-47(s) from a distance of 10 meter and at 90-degree angle of attack. Even the underbelly is secured with high-grade Kevlar and steel reinforcements that can withstand the impact of 2 HE – 36 Hand Grenades.

Its BR 6 level of protection according to CEN 1063 standard.

I think journalist have taken liberty in writing the report. Although its true, but not upto the mark. This tender which was put somewhere in 2012 has asked specifically for 2 tonnes SUV for troop and officer movement.



Now although we would see Gypsy being phased out from transporting officers or general movement, but it would always be there for strategic movement unless and until something better comes out.

Yes t will be verymuch possible. ALH is a very very powerful chopper and it should not have any problem in lifting safari to some 8000 to 10000 ft.

Its not only about whether Druvh could lift them or not, its also about what would be its effect on the vehicle. For strategic movement LMV like Gypsy are most sought for. Safari would serve the purpose of general movement, but for strategic use Gypsy would always be there.

Sir, does the military spec vehicle also have limited slip diffs/locking diffs fitted? These are important from off reading perspective. Can you also shed light on if these are extremely important from a day to day routines of the army?

Um why? It is already outdated and if the IA had the ability to do so they would have phased it out long ago. The Gypsy will likely not be in any role within the Indian military within a decade or so.
