Any new design is looking at no less than 6 -10 years of trail and error ..

Give Dhanush manufacturing to TATA or L&T besides just OFB and you will have numbers ..

45cal is gud enough, Just increase production rate ..
Why do you say that?

The ATAGS is being designed with the explicit goal of touching 50 km range. Something that can only be done with 52 Cal. The difference in weight for the 45 cal and 52 cal is not going to be too much.

Ultimately even 400 pieces of 45 cal are a good number. I mean if they make it, which is likely to be the case.

ATAGS is design specifically for mountain region, And it will take time to induct it, Mean while dhanush has cleared trails and in limited production and has better chance of mass induction ..

With regular charge and shell both 45 and a 52cal gun range is 18-19kms, With special rounds the range is 40 and 50 kms for 52cal respectively ..

But there has to be a JV for Kalyani otherwise they will never be able to move up the value chain. Also their share has to be increased to at least 700 to make it economical. The 400 OFB + 1000 ATAGS would give too much to Defence PSU with not much for privatization of MIC. Focus of OFB should be on things that can simply not be done by private industry without our exchequer bankrupted. So possibilities of increased requirements during war time should be met by Defence PSU otherwise the private sector will cost too much. For Defence PSUs this is justifiable also since they are running on public money and no risk basis.

Towed Arty is one the best places to start privatization.
The ATAGS is a DRDO project only in Name, the Gun itself and most of the mechanical parts are being made by Bharat Forge, TATA SED is supplying the electronics and targeting aids.
DRDO is simply a Nodal agency for coordination here.

With a weight pushing 12 tonnes, the ATAGS is not a mountain Gun in the terms of a M777, rather it'll be a gun to augment the firepower for 155 units we have sitting below the mountains.

Its for mountain region, The requirement for it says so ..

Its should be light-weighted to carry via medium helicopters as whole or in parts ..

Umm Both Tata and Bharat Forge were aided and guided(hand holding) to produce components as per design spec authored and specified by DRDO. Hence the role is more than coordinator.

Who will manufacture the guns in bulk ? Anywhere OFB involved ?

Tatas & BF will produce their components efficiently, as DRDO is not a production agency.. I think OFB will be final assembler.

I think Indian Army is heading from situation of having too few guns to Sabzi Mandi of Guns. Why cant they finalze on one Gun platform and then adapt to various versions, Be it Towed, SP, Tracked etc?
They are so many arms dealers for imported weapons and ways, means has to be found to oblige them.

Uttarakhand, Garhwal region and North East India has probably the worst road network. For north east India at least there are historical military reasons.

At both these places JCB Backhoe Loaders show up regularly for repair works. Thats 7.5 tons.

They have already transported 11 ton FH-77 to Kargil.

How difficult is the 12 ton ATAGS going to be, to handle?

The wheels are already closely spaced so there should not be any problem during turns. And if one thinks the weight is too much then articulated wheels can be arranged for to reduce ground pressure.

Keeping in mind, ATAGS is a 52cal gun not a 39 or 45cal, Generally a 52cal gun is 14-20tons ..

This is a light weight 52cal gun which is more mobile in its nature ..

The firing of certain rounds for the purpose of testing the serviceability of a weapon or its mount, Proof tests may be performed before a new design or unit is allowed to enter service.

Nnibody answered my question

What is proof firing ?

Dunno what are the plans, but I think They could go the Pinaka way for manufacturing.

Is it not $7 million price per artillery piece of L & T and Samsung is on the higher side, especially 50% of it is to be cheaply manufactured in India.
