ARMY TO GET MORE M4 ARMOURED VEHICLES, WITH SPIKE MISSILES
Bharat Forge Limited which has supplied 60 of its M4 armoured vehicles to the Army, some of which have been deployed in eastern Ladakh since the standoff, is set to supply another 30 vehicles while also looking at exports. The M4 is also getting a firepower upgrade with the addition of Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) on the request of the Army, according to company officials, and plans are under way to upgrade the existing 30mm gun to a 76mm gun.

“We have delivered 60 M4s to the Indian Army till date including some sent for United Nations Peace Keeping missions. We are looking for another order of 30 vehicles and expect further orders. There are also orders coming in from abroad,” a company official said at DefExpo-2022 held in Gandhinagar last week. This will become the main troop carrier in dangerous territories, the official remarked.

Anticipating further demand, Bharat Forge is ramping production capacity to 100 vehicles a year. There were several enquiries from foreign delegations during the DefExpo, company officials said.

In 2020, as the standoff began with China in eastern Ladakh, the Army went scouting for troop carrying vehicles offering better mobility and protection in high altitude areas and evaluated several vehicles fielded by Indian companies. The Army has since placed orders for protected troop carriers from Bharat Forge and TATA Group.

Bharat Forge had entered into collaboration with global aerospace and technology company Paramount Group which shared its Intellectual Property (IP) of its vehicles. Speaking at DefExpo, Paramount Group Founder Ivor Ichikowitz said they were looking at making India one of their primary partners. “We have collaborated with Kalyani Group to build a range of systems for the world. We believe that India can become one of the largest defence exporters and so we invested here,” he said.

In this regard, stating that their current order book is close to $1bn, Mr. Ichikowitz said he believes that a third of their sourcing could be done from India.

On the M4, Mr. Ichikowitz said it was 100% made in India. It was extensively redesigned by Kalyani in India and was about 95% indigenous, he stated. Stating that the India specification of M4 was the most advanced version available, he added, “It is not only an opportunity for Indian forces but also export. We are collaborating with Kalyani for a portfolio of orders for M4 from Central Asia, Africa and Middle East.”

Bharat Forge described the ‘Kalyani M4’ as a quick reaction fighting vehicle designed to meet the specific requirements of armed forces for quick mobility in rough terrain and in areas affected by mine and IED threats. It is capable of carrying an Infantry Platoon in full combat gear.

In February 2021, Bharat Forge announced that it has received an order from Defence Ministry under emergency procurement worth ₹117.95 crore to supply its Kalyani M4 mine protection vehicles to the Army. The deal was for 27 vehicles according to Army sources. The Army has since placed further orders for these vehicles.

INDIAN ARMY ISSUES RFI FOR PROCUREMENT OF 1,2000 PROTECTED MOBILITY VEHICLE
Indian Army issues a RFI for Procurement of Protected Mobility Vehicle (PMV) for High Altitude (above 4000m) and Standard (below 4000m) reports Hindustan Times.

The approximate quantities are : For High Altitude Operations 500 and for Standard Operations 700.

The army, in a request for information issued on Thursday, has spelt out the operational characteristics of the vehicles it needs for high-altitude areas.

The defence ministry plans to equip the Indian Army with protected mobility vehicles (PMV) for use in high-altitude areas, above 4000 metre, officials familiar with the matter said. The army needs similar vehicles for other areas too.

In a request for information issued on Thursday, the army spelt out the operational characteristics of the vehicles it needs for high altitude with details such as ballistic protection, payload capacity, speed, operating temperature, firing ports and operating altitude.

The army plans to buy 500 such vehicles for high altitude.

The PMVs will have to be a wheeled, 4x4 drive mode vehicle with automatic transmission, and a minimum seating capacity of 10 soldiers excluding driver and co-driver - all with combat loads not less than 30 kg.

The RFI said the PMV should optimally function in temperatures ranging from 40˚C to minus 15˚C. The army also requires standard PMVs for deployment at heights less than 4,000 metre. In another RFI, the army said it needs 700 such vehicles.

Indian Army looking for indigenous LAMVS; Sends out RFI for 800 vehicles
Besides carrying troops these vehicles will also be used for carrying loads of ammunition, surveillance and communication systems to be used for mandated operational tasks.

For high altitude areas, deserts and plains, the Indian Army is looking to buy around 800 light armoured multipurpose vehicles (LAMVs). On Friday a Request for Information was sent to several vendors for LAMVs which will be deployed with the mechanised and armoured units of the Indian Army. In the recent conflicts including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, when the US led troops were in Afghanistan or Iraq, these LAMVS proved that these are the “to-go’’ vehicles which are needed in a war zones where the troops need to be moved around and be protected from threats posed by small arms fire, hidden explosive devices and shell splinters.

The main requisite of the RfI that has been issued to identify the vendors here in India who can deliver the 800 vehicles from the time the contract is signed.

These vehicles will be in line with the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat’’ initiative and will be used for surveillance as well as reconnaissance operations once they are deployed in different terrains across the country. According to the RFI these LAMV should have adequate mobility, and should also be able to protect the troops inside.

Besides carrying troops these vehicles will also be used for carrying loads of ammunition, surveillance and communication systems to be used for mandated operational tasks.

Since the vehicles will be deployed in different terrains –desert, plains and high altitude they have to have the capability to issue early warning and intelligence and also be adaptable with drones.

TATA Motors displayed LAMV in 2014

For the first time, an Indian company TATA Motors had put on display LAMV at the DefExpo in New Delhi in 2014. This LAMV showcased its capability to be used for reconnaissance mobility, protection and firepower.

The vehicle was displayed at the TATA stand in 2014 and had a modular design which could be upgraded and also retains its functional superiority throughout its service life. With technological edge the vehicle is good for tactical battlefields and can be deployed in different terrains in the country.

It also has low life cycle cost as it is mostly indigenised and as was reported back then the subsystems shared commonality with the other standard vehicles.

Reports in the public domain have identified the TATA built LAMV among the top such vehicles in the world.

The TATA vehicle also has composite and ceramic armouring, there is a separate crew compartment and a blast deflecting “V’’ shaped hull. There are bulletproof windscreens too and take a six person crew.

Indian army to get and deploy AATV Articulated All-Terrain Vehicles along Line of Actual Control
The procurement of 18 Articulated All-Terrain Vehicles (AATV) for mobility and carrying mounted artillery guns to be deployed along the northern borders is under process, Mayank Singh reports. As per requirements projected in March 2022, the Articulated All-Terrain Vehicle (AATV) should be capable to operate up to 18,000 feet in High Altitude Areas (Glaciated and Snowbound) and marshy terrain (salt waste dry/wet) in plains. Twelve have to be sent to Ladakh and 6 to Gujarat.

As earlier reported by the New Indian Express, the Indian Army is set to get stronger firepower along its northern borders with China. Authorities have issued a Request For Information (RFI) to procure mounted (self-propelled) 105mm/37 caliber mounted gun systems. As per the RFI issued by the Indian Army on April 29, the field regiments will be equipped with mounted gun systems.
