Considering a few years ago there was a spate of attacks on convoys of security forces that resulted in a lot of injuries and fatalities, this was desolately needed
Why this? MRAPS provide more protection and r also mass produced by many companies like OFB ,TATA , mahindra etc. If it's because of more troop capacity then we already operate Ashok Leyland MBPV which is almost similar in all aspects. it's not gonna stop anything more than small arms fire, I bet it will get shredded if attack by VBIED like Pulwama.

In the past buses carrying Para military Soldiers has been attacked with small arms. That's why AL has developed armoured bus.

Due to the high number of troops that have to be transported across many areas a bus sized vehicle is only feasible and not MRAPs that carry just 8-12 personnel.

Army inducts India-made Kalyani M4 Bulletproof and Bombproof truck for carrying troops: IN PICS
Developed by Bharat Forge, operating under Kalyani Group has recently handed a total of 16 units of Kalyani M4 armoured troop carrier to the Indian Army for UN Peacekeeping missions.

The cabin is armoured to NATO STANAG 4569 Level III standard, however, it is upgradable to Level IV. In addition, there are holes for firing in the cabin, along with a weapon-mounting rig on top.

A centrally-operated tyre inflation system is used on the Kalyani M4, and it also gets 20-inch forged alloy wheels.

An operational range of 800 kilometer is claimed for the Kalyani M4, and the cabin on this behemoth is air-conditioned, bullet proof, bomb proof.

The kerb weight of the Kalyani M4 APC stands at 16,000 kilos, while it has a payload capacity of 2,300 kilograms, and the vehicle can top out at 140 kmph.

The armoured truck features tow hooks and airlift hooks for emergency situations, while it is powered by a 6-cylinder turbocharged engine that develops 465 hp and 1,627 Nm.

The Kalyani M4 armoured troop carrier was inducted by the Indian Army as a part of emergency procurement for deployment in Ladakh after the Indian-China clash at Galwan Valley.

MRAPs are frontline combat machines, the most you’ll get in one is maybe 12 guys.

these buses are needed for the convoys of 100+ Thin skinned vehicles that regularly ply the roads of JK taking security forces between bases (mostly from foreword staging stations to operational positions coming/going from leave). These were quite regularly attacked a few years back and led to a lot of casualties. After Pulwama this has largely stopped because they’ve gone back to aggressive tactics (closing the entire stretch of road with ROPs etc) unlike the situation that created Pulwama (pressure from civilian leadership to allow civilian vehicles to inter-mix with convoys and to keep roads open. This armoured bus can take over 30 people, that’s comparable to the buses in use today for the same role and I’m sure they are a LOT cheaper than MRAPs

+ the IED threat outside of the Naxal belt is almost non existent
