So it looks like deliveries will now commence in 2023 and end in 2025 instead of 2020-2025.

It seems the deliveries start from 2021..
Or the first regiment delivery starts from October 2020, and ends by 2021.

Oh ya you are right they delayed the delivery from Oct 2020 to 2023 now strange . such a long delay . Ruskies done their delay taqqiya again to milk our desperation or was it at the orders of uncle xi to delay S-400 so that we don't take any concrete actions if something goes wrong in 2020 or 2022

The delivery of the "game-changing" S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems by Russia to India will be delayed by at least two years.

The original timeline stipulated at the time of the signing of the 40,000 Crore ($5.43 Billion) contract on October 5, 2018 required the delivery of five S-400 systems to India between October 2020 and April 2023.

But Russia on February 17 conveyed that the revised deadline would delay delivery to 2025.

Sources disclosed that the payment of the first instalment of 15 per cent of the value of the contract was delayed by several months as the two sides took time to work out a payment mechanism to get around the US sanctions regime.

The Russians have so far given repeated public assurances that they would make up the time lost in devising an alternate payments mechanism, and stick to original timelines.

In the backdrop of these assurances, the declaration of delay now has come as a surprise, particularly so as India has been pressing for speeding up the original delivery schedule. This was reiterated as recently as in November 2019 during the meeting of the India-Russia Commission for Military Technical Cooperation which was chaired by the respective Defence Ministers.

After the payment of advance, the subsequent instalments are linked to contractual and delivery timelines.

Acquisition of the S-400 is critical to India's military preparedness plans in filling up glaring air defence gaps. It was on account of the critical necessity that even the requirement for offsets (counter-trade obligations) was waived off for Russia. The delay prolongs India's air defence vulnerabilities.

our ashwin surface to air missile is also having similar range which is spinoff of AAD. so if armed forces really require it drdo can provide them instead of expensive import.

Now India Gets Capability To Target Chinese Hypersonic Missiles, Stealth Jets
Russian S-400 missiles have successfully targetted hypersonic missiles during drills at the Telemba training range in Buryatia, Tass quoted Russia’s Eastern Military District. The targetting of hypersonic weapons is good news for India.

As per the Russian news agency, the anti-aircraft gunners also fired from Pantsyr-S2 surface-to-air systems during the drills, the press office stated.

“During the live-fire exercise, over a dozen targets simulated by Armavir target missiles and Favorit smart hypersonic missiles were destroyed. All the targets were hit,” the press office said in a statement.


The S-400 is one of Russia’s most sophisticated long-range surface to air missile systems and is arguably the most versatile in the world with over half a dozen types of surface to air missile each specialised in intercepting different types of target at different ranges.

The system makes use of an advanced cold launch system and is capable of guiding up to 160 missiles simultaneously and engaging up to 80 targets at a time – including combinations of ballistic and cruise missiles and all types of manned and unmanned aircraft.

The S-400 is prized for its advanced capabilities against stealth aircraft and now hypersonic weapons.

Following the signing of a $5.4 billion contract in October 2018 for the acquisition of five S-400 battalions, the Indian air defences directly threaten advanced next-generation jets fielded by China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force such as the Chengdu J-20 – as well as upcoming Pakistani stealth fighter being developed with China under Project AZM.

Vladimir Drozhzhov, deputy director of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, announced on February 5th that Russia would begin training Indian specialists to operate the S-400 system shortly – and that the implementation of the contract was on schedule.

India’s S-400 purchase will make it the largest operator of the system outside of Russia, and the country is expected to require more S-400 specialists than any other country.

Belarus and China each operate two battalions of the S-400, while the number of systems operated by Algeria which is also considered to operate them is thought to be similar. Turkey is also expected to operate two battalions. The number of S-400s in Indian service will thus be more than double that of any other export client.

MRSAM, Spyder SAM, CIWS , QRSAM --- India is only buying long range 40N6E and 48n6 missiles of system. --- probably 9m82m missile is also part of a deal --- who knows.
