BTW, this was flying few 10,000 feet above ground, well within SHORAD range. No need for ASATs.

F22 was used because the ballon was at 65000 feet, only the F15C is the only other US fighter plane that can fly that high. F22 real service ceiling and top speed is still classified, probably higher then F15.

According to pentagon the F22 launched its Aim-9X at 58000 feet.

Interesting that they used F22s really. AFAIK, all F22s are in Alaska, Florida or Langley- nowhere close to Montana. And they also were not worried about a RADAR payload on the balloon getting the F22's RADAR signatures.
