Putin came as China's envoy to persuade India in not to boycott Beijing winter Olympics just like US did.

Interestingly both Russian Foreign Minister and Defence Minister were present with Putin.

About the phone call with Biden, you are correct. Things may get ballistic at Russian borders in coming days.

They are protesting about the Arunachali territory that China had occupied and retained (slightly outside of Tawang today). Arunachal, just like Bhutan, had a lot more land than what we see today on our map.

Similarly, Chumbi valley was not Chinese until 1951. Even then there was no formal control until the Tibetan occupation was completed.

Jaishankar has been doing the heavy lifting and there is a reason for that as long as the troops are given free hand on the border. PM Modi coming out openly naming China would make a clear us vs them, where us is USA, NATO, India and them is China, Russia.

Given what we saw recently with Putin's visit yesterday, he wants to just keep both sides guessing. However, he needs to speed up the induction of weapons on the border and intervene in the stupid purchase decisions Kadi Ninda Singh is making.

The news said that the RELOS pact was put off while the AK deal and formalized the 2+2 Format of meeting.

IMO RELOS was put off because Putin did not want to antagonize China. Ruskies using our bases for support won't affect anyone including Uncle Sam, but if we were to hypothetically do that, it would annoy Xinnie the Poop, who is badly required given Russia's current Ukraine calculations.
