India should have pushed its own issues, not the "Xinjiang human rights" one, and there are plenty.
The Winter Olympics boycott led by the US was on the stated terms of "human rights violations in Xinjiang". Either we join that or we boycott separately stating our reasons- the first was a multilateral bandwagon of Western libbies , the later would've been purely bilateral with hardly any outcome (who gives a shot about Winter Olympics, there's just one player qualified to participate) when trade is soaring at an all time high. Joining the multilateral group would've a message, bilateral boycott means nothing to either of the countries

How much of this trade deficit between India and China is inflated as prices of products have increased anywhere between 25% to 300% across the spectrum.

Regardless, we should work to plug the trade deficit. Indian companies are still shamelessly sourcing from China.

Manufacture of consumer goods components which were manufactured in India till a couple of decades back have moved to China as the margins added to the companies top and bottom line.

Continuous targeted attacks by Babudom on sme's has further compounded the problem.

Ambattur in Chennai used to be a SSI hub. It was also called Ambattur industrial estate.

A sharp growth in BPO's, IT Parks resulted in demand for real estate which in turn turned these hubs into residential areas. Babudom in its infinite wisdom ordered most of these small scale units to shift to a place close to the AP-TN border. How many would do that? Many of them shut shop and left.

Successive Govt's go out on an arm and a leg to support large businesses or big brands. If the same is extended to SME's, they will absorb a good number of people passing out of technical institutes and ITIs.

Tom-tomming ideas is one thing. Putting it successfully into execution is another.
Actually a curious observation is that increased imports from chinks is in part an indirect consequence of schemes like PLI, SPECS, EMC 2.0 etc as well (apart from obvious global commodity price hikes; which is probably the biggest reason). Companies are sourcing equipments, key starting materials and intermediates from chinkis while/after setting up plants here and those add up to the import list. At later parts even those can be sourced domestically but for now focus is more on finished products.

Exactly my point.

Opindia is also making fuddu- percentage jump is based on base size. 45-50 percent rise with big trade partners like the US, China and UAE is obviously way more than 102 percent with Aussies.
Statistical dishonesty aside, their point on intermediates is not really much off the mark imo.

I meant their stance in UNSC, the persistent attacks like the West makes on them(and even on us in the past). Post 370 abrogation, we saw the first statement by China on "unilaterally change of status quo" in Kashmir. And how many times have we seen the Western asshats commenting on everything in India. CCP are total dickheads, agreed, but joining these hypocritic goras on a bangwagon of "hooman rights violations" in Xinjiang isn't very smart
Its ok to keep the enemy guessing.

Imo we should happily go for militarisation of IOR with Quad, do military exercises with the Muricans in Ladakh and have full-blown military deals with the West. But riding on their ideology driven subversion tactics is something we should stay wary of- because those who set the "just" ideology get to decide who is and who isn't a part of the tribe, and they'll do it solely on their interests.

True that capital goods/equipment may be adding to the deficit, but import patterns haven't changed a great deal over the past few years. Literally entire sectors are supported by imports from China. Practically the entire corporate gifting industry barring garments such as t-shirts, jackets etc is dependent on imports from China. Indian producers have not been able to match the quality at that price point nor the delivery deadlines.

I think thats a given, trying to always save a buck first is what has got us here.
Nationalism isn't a factor for businesses anywhere. Chinese will buy stuff from India if they can get it cheaper.(It's said that the Chinese have a cash register for a heart)
Poor policy decisions, misguided socialism, corrupt bureaucracy among 100 other things are responsible for what got us here but lack of nationalism among businessmen ain't one

Covid has changed all of that, we had go begging to the Chinese to resume export of their mostly substandard medical equipment at inflated prices during the 2nd wave and then had to lobby the US to lift their ban on vaccine raw materials - the capability of our industrial base was completely exposed, not able to produce even mid level technology items during a national crisis. High tech items like semiconductors tho is door ki baat.

And the same US was begging the Chongs for toilet papers and diapers during the container shortage time. Supply chain efficiency (low cost, profitability) and resilience (ability to absorb shocks) are inversely proportional. Most of the global manufacturing was wired towards efficiency including ours. Going ahead, we should just try getting a larger chunk of (Get out of China, China+1, Make in India) programs. Interdependence is here to stay, kahin nahi jaa rha. Haan, government will be fool to not try and get hands on stuff that'll have strategic importance in future like Lithium, Semiconductors, Pharma APIs etc

Activism funded by foreign governments, babudom overreach probably paid for by the same dubious interest groups has nearly killed small and midsize manufacturing in India.

Just one example -

After a lot of protests and pressure from activists and the civil society, the Anglo-Dutch multinational, Unilever, will permanently close its polluting thermometer manufacturing factory in the tourist town of Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu.

The unit in Kodaikanal is considered to be the largest mercury based thermometer manufacturing factory in the world.
Sterlite anyone? Same modus operandi. Tried the same in Kudankulam.

Some interesting information can be extracted from the import data from China.

^ This is costing our heavy industries big.

The above is for two digit codes only. The amount we import is mind boggling.

You can get the data here.

A lot of these things used to be made in India, instead of nurturing them we let them get destroyed with cheap Chinese import. Per some conversations i have had (in electrical sector) the govt has only woken up now, but with depressed economic situation and entrenched Chinese players it will take a long time to get on the right track.

Question.
Can low skilled industry survive in cities like Bangalore? I mean not the company itself but employees in terms cost cost of living of the city?

Hmm. PLI like schemes and large scale parks have been proposed for electrical equipments, heavy engineering products, chemicals, pigments and dyes, fertilizers, plastics etc. The upcoming budget is supposed to address import dependencies in some more sectors .......
