I have a suspicion that CCP/PLA thugs are planning to operate secret underground mines on the Indian side of the LAC in Galwan, Pangong Tso finger area and elsewhere. The Himalayas are a great source of rare earth elements, because they were formed by two tectonic plates pushing against each other. China is the largest source of these rare earths which are needed in all modern electronics. China wants to keep its monopoly because it blackmails other countries by controlling the export supply of these rare earth elements. It also forces international electronics companies to remain in China by being the largest source of these elements and limiting export of them. If India were to start mining rare earth elements in the Himalayas, it has the potential to break the Chinese hold on China's rare earth monopoly and consumer electronics manufacturing.

This kind of underground mining requires water, and Ladakh is a high altitude desert with water at only certain areas. The Chinese have taken positions everywhere next to these areas. I first suspected the Chinese intention of underground mining in Ladakh on Indian side of LAC when I saw the tunnels they were digging at finger 8, and how these tunnels were wide enough to accomodate trucks carrying the mined ores. Here is a report and a video about this (note that these were already there by end of 2019):

New Delhi, Dec 26 (IANS) China has upped the ante against India''s security establishment by massively enhancing its military infrastructure in the bordering areas in Ladakh that have witnessed skirmishes between the forces of the two countries.
China''s People''s Liberation Army has started carrying out military infrastructure development work near the Pangong lake in Ladakh region, a Defence Ministry source said on Thursday.
The PLA has set up tents and has constructed underground tunnels and are constructing more tunnels at the disputed Finger 8 mountain spur near Pangong Tso region, a source said.
"It has been further found that Chinese Army has augmented deployment and patrolling the area. They are now denying movement of Indian Army forces in the vicinity of the area," said a source.
Till now, there was no military infrastructure work carried out in the disputed area that the PLA used to come during patrolling in the region. But with setting up of tents, the Chinese army has stationed itself in the region which has become a matter of concern for the Indian security establishment.
There have been regular face-offs between the two armies on the northern bank of the 134-km-long Pangong lake, two-thirds of which is controlled by China as it extends from Tibet to Ladakh.
The incidents of clashes between both forces have been occurring due to deferring perceptions about the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China.
The Indian Army said whenever such incidents happen delegation-level talks led by brigadier-rank officers take place as per the established bilateral mechanism to defuse tensions.
In mid-September this year, Indian and Chinese troops were involved in a heated exchange in eastern part near the Pangong lake after PLA personnel objected to patrolling by Indian soldiers in the area.
The disputed Finger-5 to Finger-8 (mountainous spurs) area on the north bank of Pangong Tso, incidentally, had witnessed a violent clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers, with stones and iron rods being used to injure each other, on August 15, 2017.
This video shows a picture of the tunnel at finger 8 at end of 2019 (starting from 1:47 in the video) :
Such underground rare earth mining usually requires a water reservoir. It is possible that when the Galwan River flow seemed to stop last summer, it was because the water was being diverted to fill an underground water reservoir/lake that the PLA had created for their underground mining activities. Then once the underground water resevoir/lake was full, the Galwan River's flow resumed.

I think the Indian Army should procure unmanned vehicles that can drill through rock to investigate these areas on Indian side of LAC for both PLA presence as well as to discover areas rich in rare earth elements for Indian mining exploration.

Perhaps the PLA's intent all along was to ensure that there was no Indian Army presence on the finger area as well as up to a few kilometers into the Indian side of LAC at Galwan, which is why the agreements the PLA negotiated with the Indian Army created a No Man's Land buffer area overground: Meanwhile the PLA can operate their underground mines under Indian side of LAC without the fear of being discovered (as underground mining also involves small explosions).

Another long term worry is that Chinese mining waste water could mix with the Himalayan runoff to pollute the river water downstream. We already know for a fact that the Chinese are doing this sort of mining at other parts of the Himalayas like near Arunachal Pradesh. Even in Arunachal, Chinese may have created underground mining tunnels into the Indian side of the LAC. The Chinese Communist Party is extremely greedy, and adept at stealing other countries' resources as they have already demonstrated in the South China Sea.

This kind of ideas don't come to our government. They are too busy in election mode. And if someone does have an idea and tries to implement it. Loads of underground activists, Human Rights specialist and environmentalist gets activated, not to mention the milords. Apne pass toh mineral mineral ban keh hi reh jata hai.

Yeah I have a feeling that China has a hand in the farmers' agitation, the naxalites/maoists terrorist activities (supplying them weapons), and maybe even the recent Uttarakhand flooding to keep India off balance. India needs to learn to return the favor, otherwise there are no consequences for such activites by the Chinese Communist Party.

Not exactly Arthashastra but yeah, kinda.

Perhaps DFI needs revived interest in concepts of Kautilyan state and Chanakyan state among other things.

Commentary on current affairs is exciting but also fleeting, beyond identifying patterns of behaviour of various nation states, it does little to help us learn about our own rich literary legacy.

China creating own digital currency will 'offset' US sanctions

China avoids US toothless sanctions and nullifies any future sanctions and weakens the dollar in one move.
