There have been incidents in the past where family of officers were on the crosshairs and targeted.

Have a relative who was posted in Punjab during the insurgency days. His son was singled out and brutally murdered to send a message across.

Anyone whose parents had served in the army in field areas during the heights of insurgencies in the 80's and 90's can relate to it.

You will not be able to find a single infantry officer of that era who hasn't had a close encounter with death.

So if you look at Gen Bipin Rawat.He is from an era of young officers that has seen the most brutal form of North East ,kashmir,Sri Lankan and Punjab troubles.
And despite having seen so much death and destruction in life and still able continue rendering your services persistently for decades together is a thing only a person of Gen Rawat's temperament can do.

And that is the dangerous part. Almost all "discussions" on MOST issues lead to BJP/Hindu versus others. This boils downs to gau moothra or other offensive/provocative posts which leads to counter posts. All these things can be subjected to scrutiny if admins really want to go for an FIR as there is no real anonymity.

Something done on the spur of the moment due to an "emotional exchange with some random dude on the internet" can spoil the person's life.

When the shit hits the fan, the person will be alone in his fights.

Let's recall what happened to "secular" Navin from Banglore who is the nephew of a sitting DALIT Congress MLA. Navin the "secular guy" puts out greetings on Xmas/Ramadan etc, so as usual on a Hindu festival he puts out the corresponding greeting, all of a sudden an Islamist pops up suddenly with a highly derogatory tweet to which Navin responds.

Rest is history. Police station gherao, rioting, burning vehicles & the the sitting DALIT Congress MLAs house was burned down. Imagine that.

Point is anything or any post can be made to go viral & stuff can go bad from thereon.

So when we see a provocative post saying that helicopter crash of CDS is "divine retribution" & (or) "the souls of the murdered christians of Nagaland can now find solace", the itch to respond is severe. Once you respond, even if in a civil manner, things will deteriorate.

None of his successors had an Exit strategy... rather they expanded the footprint & Indian army got bogged down in Kashmir... with no end in sight.

Now Gen Rawat was in mid of executing a restructuring & integration plan(which was proposed decades back)... he is gone too... ab aagey kya hoga?

If you need an exit strategy you need to liberate Kashmir without increasing foot print in Kashmir would lead to a disaster and hundreds of Kargil like infiltration attempts. Restructuring issue can be debated if you shed more information on it. I think what you mean to say is less No of soldiers for CT Operations by advanced tactics & better Intelligence and more Numbers of soldiers for conventional operations.
