Malaysia.... not really. They are nowhere close to Azerbaijan or Turkey in terms of openness. They are one of the most fundamentalist countries you will find in Southeast Asia. The Malaysia of the 80s was very different from the Malaysia of today.

Don't go by the image of Kuala Lumpur which is a very international city. Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur are 2 different countries. Interestingly, they have a religious police even there.
