Uber suspends Pakistani driver in Australia over bomb plot allegation

https://www.dawn.com/news/1330394

Uber has suspended a driver in Australia while police investigate allegations that he told a passenger he led an organisation related to the militant Islamic State (IS) group and planned to blow up Parliament House, the ride-hailing company said Monday.

The passenger, a woman who declined to be identified out of fear for her safety, said on Monday she was heading home from downtown Canberra after a night out with friends when she caught an Uber early Sunday morning.

The woman said the driver said he was from Pakistan and asked if she had “ever eaten human flesh.”

He said he planned to blow up a Canberra shopping mall as well as Parliament House and told her he was not taking her to her home on Canberra's outskirts but to the town of Cooma, 100 kilometres to the south, the woman said.

She said she told the driver to pull over at a gas station so she could use the toilet, and called the police emergency number from there. Two police cars arrived about 10 minutes later, she said.

Police said they searched the Uber car but found nothing suspicious. Police drove the woman home and did not arrest the driver.

“Police conducted initial background checks and established there was no threat to the public or the complainant,” a police statement said.

It said an investigation of the woman's allegations was continuing with the involvement of national police and security agencies.

The driver's access to the Uber app was restricted when the company became aware of the allegations, Uber said.

“We'll continue liaising with the police as the allegations are assessed,” Uber said in a statement.

The woman said police told her the driver didn't dispute her accusations but explained to them “he was just trying to wind me up.”

“It was a terrifying experience. I'm so stressed I can't even explain how I feel,” she told the AP on Monday.

“I want Uber to be doing a lot more screening of the people that they're bringing on, because apparently it's not doing enough,” she said.

The gas station where the journey ended was on a highway to Cooma, but before the turnoff to the woman's home.

Canberra became the first city in Australia to regulate ride sharing when Uber launched there in October 2015.

Mubashir Lucman of Awaaz network recently reported that prostitution has increased 100% in last three years:
A survey by awaaz network shows 50 percent women are indulging into part time or full time prostitution to pay daily bills.
Electricity bills, transportation bills are at all time high. Daily wage workers are the most hit as Chinese workers only work in infra projects now

I get a mixed feeling of pity and anger whenever I hear or see their name. If they would stop destroying countries like India,Bangladesh and Afghanistan, they would likely be prosperous. Instead of spending unnecessary revenue on military, they should divert it onto their education considering their literacy is only 56%.

Trainee pilot flew Pakistani jet with 300 on board as captain slept in 1st class – media

A London-bound Pakistan International Airlines flight with over 300 people on board was left in the hands of a trainee pilot for more than two hours while his captain was in the first-class cabin grabbing some shuteye, local media revealed.
Amir Akhtar Hashmi, a senior pilot for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), was supposed to train his first officer, Ali Hassan Yazdani, during the flight. The young trainee was joined in the cockpit by another first officer, Mohammad Asad Ali.

Shortly after flight PK-785 departed from Islamabad, Hashmi, a former president of Pakistan Airlines Pilots Association (PALPA), handed over the controls to Yazdani and left the cockpit for the first-class cabin, Dawn newspaper reported.

The London-bound flight was carrying over 305 people, including 293 passengers in economy class and 12 in first class.

According to the newspaper, one of the passengers spotted the uniformed pilot sleeping peacefully in the flat bed seat. Fearing that a sleeping captain was a danger to flight safety, the passenger raised the issue with a senior flight attendant, who had to mention it in her report.

“Passenger (Seat 1D) complained that while the captain was sleeping in the business class cabin, [the passenger did not] feel safe. It had been explained that two other crew members were in the cockpit, but he said that he would follow the matter and write down a complaint card as well,” said the flight report cited by the newspaper.

Neither co-pilot reported the incident to management in order to protect Hashmi from an inquiry.

PIA, Pakistan’s flag carrier airline, was also reluctant to look into the matter, but eventually caved in to pressure from superior authorities. Hashmi was taken off flight duty as a result, according to the airline’s spokesperson, Danyal Gilani.

Earlier in March, a somewhat similar incident occurred on a British Airways transatlantic flight departing from Houston, Texas. As the Boeing 747 was taxiing to the runway, one of the pilots left the cockpit to help the cabin crew point out the emergency exits during the safety demonstration.

According to the Daily Mail, the captain of the plane told passengers: “We’re short of crew today so the pilot is helping with the safety demo.” He then returned to the cockpit just before the plane was ready to take off.

A BA spokesman later said that all of the airline’s flights are manned by sufficient crews, adding, “our cabin crew and pilots always work as a team to ensure the safety of our customers.”

The incident on the PIA flight may have also been caused by pilot fatigue – an issue believed to be widespread in the aviation industry. Last year, numerous pilots working for some of the world’s most prominent airlines, including Emirates, told RT they had experienced runs of several sleepless nights at a time because of tight flight schedules.

One whistleblower from flydubai – a UAE-based low-cost airline – sent documents to RT showing that pilots, particularly young ones, were being assigned multiple flight shifts in a row, saying that crew members often did not have enough time to sort out their sleep cycles.

“Everybody at the company has these dangerous shifts from day flight to night flight, and then back to a day flight, and then back to a night flight, and it has definitely been a big issue for a long time,” the whistleblower said.

New law in Pakland
Imprisonment and fine for eating, smoking at public places during Ramadan
MAY 11, 2017

Senate standing committee on Religious Affairs on Wednesday have adopted Ehtram-e-Ramzan (amendement) Bill 2017 in which penalties of up to 25000 have been set for hotel owners who deny to follow the Ehtram-e-Ramzan Ordinance, 1981.

Under the amended bill, offenders who will eat openly at public places during Ramazan hours would pay fine of Rs500 along with three-month in prison. Likewise, media outlets or cinema houses will pay a minimum fine of Rs500,000 upon violation of law.

It is appropriate here to mention that Senator Tanveer Khan had introduced amended bill during senate sitting back on Jan-16 this year. The bill was forwarded for further consideration to standing Committee on Religious Affairs.
