WASHINGTON - Israelis hold a higher favorability of India than any country in the world, according to a new Pew survey.


While Israel is in the median of countries that believe India's global influence is growing stronger – with 50 percent of Israelis saying its influence is staying the same – Israelis have notably higher views of India compared to the rest of the world. Seventy-one percent of Israelis hold favorable views while 20 percent hold unfavorable views and nine percent did not share an opinion.


These views come on the heels of burgeoning ties fostered by the United States, with the Biden administration forming the new I2U2 partnership between the three countries alongside the United Arab Emirates. Beyond this, India is the top destination in the world for Israeli arms exports.


To that end, Israel's political right holds notably more positive views of India compared to their ideological opponents on the left. Seventy-seven percent of right-wing Israelis hold a favorable view of India, compared to 65 percent of the Israeli left. This 12-point swing is similar to differences in countries like Hungary and Australia, as opposed to the United States where the left holds a notably higher favorability view of India compared to the right.

These views, however, do not necessarily extend to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is often described as promoting a Hindu nationalist ideology. Forty-two percent of Israelis do not have confidence in him to do the right thing regarding world affairs, 41 percent view him favorably, and 16 percent did not answer. This lack of confidence in Modi is slightly greater than the 12-country median in the survey.


The high favorability comes amid the backdrop of notable similarities between the two countries. Both are marking the 75th anniversary of their respective independence in 2023, while religious and conservative elements in both countries are taking on the independence of their respective judiciaries.
