I intend to pull aside an Indonesian(s) and ask them what are the faultlines in their society, what are the historical controversies, which historian/academic in the US or Europe has raised heckles with Indonesia the way Audrey Truschke or Christopher Jaffrelot has with Indians, what type of discussions go on on Indonesian TV. And why their country is not scrutinised the way India is. I expect an intelligent answer.
In fact, for the 4th most populous country, it is the least media scrutinized place on earth.

Indonesia is comfortably within the Anglosphere's guild. (Apart from the Konfrontasi where Indonesia sought to annex British Malaya which ended with the removal of Sukarno, the guy who initiated the whole fiasco). As is the case with the West Pakistan's brutal crackdown on Bengalis, the entirety of NATO/first-world countries actively aided Suharto as the Indonesians destroyed the East Timorese even when they had already lost everything. So, politically they were aligned with the West since the very beginning despite being a part of NAM (to a greater extent than India's lean towards the USSR during the same era).

The Chinese don't want to rile the Indonesians up too much because they already have plenty of enemies in the entire Indo-Pacific region, especially someone who mostly controls the actual passage through the Strait of Malacca and not just the entering point as is the case with India, so even their state media refrains.

They are a Muslim-majority country so they won't be criticised by Al Jazeera either. That pretty much covers all bases for those that take advantage of a country's faultlines.
