Indian Army hunts for sniper rifle under F-INSAS infantry modernisation programme

The Indian Army is looking to identify new sniper rifles for its infantry regiments under the ambitious F-INSAS infantry modernisation effort. The Army expressed its urgency, asking for early responses from interested vendors. The Indian Army currently operates the Russian Dragunov and Israeli Galil sniper rifles, the latter almost solely by its Special Forces units.

The Army has called upon vendors to quickly respond with information pertaining to calibre, types of ammunition, maximum effective range with various types of ammunition against human targets, length and weight, muzzle velocity, full details of the integrated sighting system, modularity, details of mounting systems for add-on sights, details of flash suppression systems, reliability and effectiveness. Interested vendors will be called upon for quick trials in India under Army conditions. This particular procurement is likely to be a sizeable one, considering that it is for regular infantry, unlike an earlier ongoing purchase for sniper rifles specifically for the special forces units and National Security Guard.

The 2nd Annual Soldier Modernisation Conference, hosted by Defence IQ in collaboration with the Indian Army, has been confirmed to take place 11-13 September 2012 at the Sheraton Hotel in New Delhi, India. This year's programme focuses on the highly publicised F-INSAS programme, estimated at a $10Bnforecasting budget, with Lieutenant General Vinod Bhatia, Director General, Directorate Infantry and Lieutenant General Sumer Singh, Director General, Directorate Perspective Planning – both representing the Indian Army - to lead discussions on capability gaps and perspective planning for infantry requirements up to 2020+.

Lieutenant General Bhatia and Lieutenant General Singh are joined by senior representatives of the Indian Army as well as the DRDO – the Defence Research and Development Organisation in India - on the speaker faculty, which already features international military participation from the US, Israel,Czech Republic, Italy, Croatia and Spain, amongst others.

The main purpose of the event is to present attendees the much-needed networking platform for international industry professionals to meet senior military decision-makers responsible for the major programmes – notably F-INSAS – within India's defence organisations, and to hear directlyIndia's current priorities and ambitious future requirements.

Whilst there is still much speculation on the plans of the Indian Army for allocations and contracts, with global organisations weighing out their priorities between India and other emerging markets such as the Middle East, India undeniably remains at the forefront of growth in the world in terms of defence spending.

According to Visiongain's analytical report, "The Indian Defence Market 2012-2022," it is estimated that India will spend $38.51 billion on defence in 2012 alone...............

My positive guesstimate, we are atleast 5 to 7 years away from getting it oprationalized. There are many components & technologies of the FINSAS system are either under development or procurement procedure.

I do not think, IA has worked out the final version of FINSAS system & it's various components yet against it's future doctrine.

And how old is the programme? Five to ten more seminars in five star hotels and how many previously conducted? There has to be a method to madness.

The target date to equip army with the system is 2020.

The problem for future soldier systems has never been lack of technology, those are commercially available already. The problem is getting the weight down and make it ergonomic. FELIN has the been the only success thus far.

Work underwater? No, it can't work underwater since the C4I can't be transmitted. The soldier can drench himself in water or mud, crawl out and FELIN will still work. Already tested in the jungles of French Guiana. It can still work after any shock level a human can survive.
