It was already the case before F35I.Well Israel continue to bomb deep in Syria against Iranian targets.

True. If only the F-35 could be as cheap as the French stealth fighter--- and just as invisible.LOL !
LM reduce the F35 frame price, but PW F135 engine cost rises of 15% ....
3.6 $ millions more. quite nothing

Just FOC will be a great achievement .....True. If only the F-35 could be as cheap as the French stealth fighter--- and just as invisible.
At least Rafale is not so limited...Source please....
Seems like it only happens at the extreme edge of high altitude envelope of around 65K feet, also to use afterburner more than 80 seconds is burning through fuel like crazy. This is hardly ever used in real life. Moreso, going supersonic means they loose their stealthiness. At least Rafale is not so limited...
The Pentagon will have to live with limits on F-35’s supersonic flights
The Navy's and Marine Corps' versions of the F-35 will have restrictions on how long they can fly at supersonic speeds because of a risk of damage to the tail section.www.defensenews.com
"An issue that risks damage to the F-35’s tail section if the aircraft needs to maintain supersonic speeds is not worth fixing and will instead be addressed by changing the operating parameters , the F-35 Joint Program Office told Defense News in a statement Friday.
The deficiency, first reported by Defense News in 2019, means that at extremely high altitudes, the U.S. Navy’s and Marine Corps’ versions of the F-35 jet can only fly at supersonic speeds for short bursts of time before there is a risk of structural damage and loss of stealth capability.
The problem may make it impossible for the Navy’s F-35C to conduct supersonic intercepts."

These issues do not have much impact in real life. The DAS, F-35s integrated sensors and missiles do the maneuvering for the pilot. Second, the use of afterburner and higher speeds increase detectability of aircraft. So its rarely used. Hence, notice why US stealth cruise missiles are always subsonic.Les F-35B et F-35C seront incapables de conduire des interceptions supersoniques
Après avoir enquêté plusieurs mois sur cette question, Defense News a finalement obtenu la confirmation que les problèmes structurels rencontrés par le F-35www.meta-defense.fr
They say that B and C variant can only fly to mach1.3 forty seconds, and mach 1.2 the double (80 sec)
They say the full reheat can't be used more than 1 minute.
They say that beyond 20° AoA the plane is unstable.
They say the limitations are probably the same for A variant, but as the plane is on ashore airfield, it is easier and faster to have the information about the dammage in case of, so USAF accept to go further these limitations.
All of that 14 years after first preserial flight ! ie the flight quality of the bird will never be improved. Too late. The flight domain is the first thing opend in a plane developpment shedule. F35 will remain a fat and lazy jet.
And when the stealth will vanished (thanks to late radar improvements, made by russia, china, even iran) what will remain? a fat and lazy jet.
They put a speed limit on the new F-35 because it can lose its tail
Published May 4, 2020 | By admin SOURCE: EASTERN HERALD The risk that the tail of the all-new Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II multipurpose fighter might collapse at supersonic speeds, has forced military authorities to modify the flight regulations for that ship. There will be no structural improvements to its fuselage or other actions to fix the already discovered technical problem, they said at the Pentagon in a message sent last Friday to the Defense News website. Simply put, pilots will be advised to only overcome the Mach barrier for very short periods. The matter was filed last December “under the category ‘no plans to correct’ (the flaw)”, due to the high costs that the full repair would have entailed, according to the official response. A review of the aircraft’s length and some materials would be essential, as well as subsequent flight tests. In the middle of the year 2019, the medium already denounced the problems of the fuselage and the stealth coating and realized that the solution conceived by the military was to set a limit of less than a minute for accelerations to Mach 1.3. Since then, it has only become obvious that the Pentagon is unwilling to undertake anything to make the plane justify it’s ‘Lightning’ name again, which means ‘lightning’. Officials say the supersonic flight is not that important to a fifth-generation fighter, an optimism some experts don’t share. “Authentic condemnation” Defense News picks up the comment from a retired naval aviator, who last year said those limitations could be deadly in direct combat scenarios. The operational idea for the F-35 is to destroy the enemy aircraft before it can detect it and engage in combat, but it is not feasible to always rely on that option. The veteran cited the experience of the Vietnam War when military aviation relied heavily on missiles and put aside his “front weapon,” something that caused additional deaths in air-to-air battles. An analyst from the Russian media Svobódnaya Pressa (‘Free Press’) described what happened on Tuesday as a “real condemnation for the F-35, as a fifth-generation fighter.” Distinguished Russian military pilot Vladimir Popov explained, in statements to RIA Novosti, that the ability to maintain stable flight at supersonic speed is one of the most important characteristics for this class of aircraft. In his opinion, the defect is exposed at the end of the combat: “If all the ammunition is depleted in the attack, the value of the aeroplane as a combat unit tends to zero,” he said. “In this case, the pilot’s primary task is to break free of the chase and land safely on his airfield. If he has a supersonic regime, it is much easier to do so.”
never forget that F35 was studied to replace A10 and F16 in CAS, so no real need to be supersonic.Only on B and C models. But pilots are not worried since most flights are done in subsonic region.
They were meant to be multi-role fighters with more focus on attack. USN F-35C are designed for matitime strike and CAP while USMC's (RNs and RAF's) F-35Bs is designed for ground attack, and if needed air supremacy over legacy fightets.never forget that F35 was studied to replace A10 and F16 in CAS, so no real need to be supersonic.
