AL31FP mai Russians charged us exorbitant money for translating the ToT documents from Russian to English.
Cost of wrenches was in lakhs, the entire titanium HAD to be imported from Russia.

Dont even start about Russian TOT
I can't comment on the translation part because I haven't heard the concerned people talking about it explicitly but as far as tech transfer is concerned , UEC and NPO Saturn have held up their part of the deal and HAL Koraput has also done an excellent job is absorbing the know why and know how.

Coming to titanium, yes Ti alloy ingots,billets are imported from Russia as raw material. One of the reasons we don't produce them in country is because of the limited usage of such ingots which won't justify setting up a greenfield plant. Let alone making a profit, the enterprise won't even be able to break even and recover the set up costs.

Since I have talked a lot about titanium , let me add some more. Ti alloys are used in the IGV which are variable, the first four LPC stages( both stator and rotor) and the first HPC stage. It is supported by ball bearing in front and roller bearing at back and has a 3.5:1 . The disc to which the blades are attached is made from high speed carbide steel.



HPC has a compression ratio of 6.6:1. Only the first three HPC stators are variable. The other 6 stators are fixed. Leaving the first stage, the blades of the 8 stages are made from Nickel based alloys. The discs are made from carbide steel.

Intermediate casing supports the LPC and HPC casing and is also a primary load bearing element of the entire engine. It is through this casing that the engine is attached to the airframe. Central bevel drive is placed here. Its manufactured again from Nickel based alloys.


Now the main part. Everyone is talking about the GE F414 deal and the associated tech transfer. The key buzz word is single crystal turbine blades.

Well let me say. Besides DMRL which has developed this tech indigenously, HAL Koraput Sukhoi engine division also makes single crystal HPT blades for the AL-31FP. This was part of the tech transfer from Russia. Investment casting is used in this process with ceramic/urea moulds.

Investment casting produces ultra high finish and further machining or profiling isn't required for the turbine blades. Its an intricate process comprising of core mass preparation, core inject from die,levelling of core, centring of core, pattern making and assembly,ceramic coating, de waxing, calcination and metal pouring, cooling, knock out and cutting,leaching in KF12 and KF14 alkyl solution followed by heating to remove central core.


What GE promises to transfer to us today has already been transferred by the Russians more than a decade back and this was part of the original deal signed in 2004.

I frequently see "Jelcz" in roads, very good vehicle, even it's ordinary troop transport version also really nice, Not counting rebranded Czech Tetra but we should give more space to Tata LPTA like polish giving priority to Jelcz chassis for all their equipments..

The only flaw I find in this system is that very graceful turret shot trap...otherwise the system looks perfect to upgrade old T-72s
DRDO & CVRDE personnel should mandatorily go kiss the bums of Turkish counterparts every-morning.
