China's Chip Production Jumps 40% Amid Growng Dominance in Legacy Chips

China’s total integrated circuit (IC) output surged 40 per cent to 98.1 billion units in the first quarter, a sign that the country is expanding its production of older-generation chips while being constrained by US trade restrictions on advanced chip-making equipment.

National IC output jumped 28.4 per cent to 36.2 billion units in March alone, reaching an all-time high, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday.

...

China’s IC output has risen sharply thanks partly to strong demand from downstream sectors, such as new energy vehicles. Government data showed that the country’s new-energy-vehicle output in the first quarter rose 29.2 per cent to 2.08 million vehicles. Smartphone output expanded 16.7 per cent during the same period.

China has expanded its IC production capacity in recent years, with output in the first three months of this year almost tripling from the same quarter in 2019, as semiconductor manufacturing facilities mushroomed across the country.

...

An unintended consequence of US export controls on advanced chip technology to China may be a wave of state-backed investment leading to overproduction and, potentially, Chinese dominance of global legacy-chip production,” researchers wrote.

The mainland’s global share of mature-process capacity is expected to reach 39 per cent by 2027, up from 31 per cent last year, Taiwan-based IC research company TrendForce said in an earlier note.

China imported $349.4 billion in chips last year.

overproduction doesn't exist,

China's semiconductor industry still has a big gap to fill
Yes, the over production is in the rest of the world!

China is 50% of the world's market. Chinese semiconductor companies have many years of growth left just to supply China's own industries!

Just like China's aircraft industry, many years of growth just to supply China's own market.

Outside China, a lot of companies in both industries will shrink or die as they lose sales to the Chinese market.

ASML has a monopoly on chips litho. If you are not buying from them, you are not building new semicon plants.

So far mostly China is buying :)

Tesla's new mega factory project in Shanghai to start construction

SHANGHAI, April 17 (Xinhua) -- U.S. carmaker Tesla Inc. will break ground in May on its new mega factory project capable of producing 10,000 Megapacks a year in Shanghai, the company has announced.
As Tesla's first energy storage mega factory project outside the U.S. market, it is expected to go into mass production in the first quarter of 2025.
The factory will initially produce 10,000 Megapack units every year, equal to nearly 40 GWh of energy storage.
Megapack is a powerful battery that provides energy storage and support, helping to stabilize the grid and prevent outages, according to details on Tesla's website.
In January 2019, Tesla broke ground on its Shanghai Gigafactory, becoming the first to benefit from a new policy allowing foreign carmakers to establish wholly owned subsidiaries in China.
The plant showed remarkable efficiency and delivered its first batch of made-in-China vehicles within a year. ■

Apple has peaked. It'll be an accelerating downhill run from now on.

It suffered a 10% decline in a year when the global market expanded!
