ROI on BRI is very low ... It has gone beyond that .. now because of state control of banks and loans to the same infrastructure companies their entire banking system is exposed .. A consequence of this is less money for productive investments.

ROI on any infrastructure in developing country is very low, without 20-30 years, you won't even be able to get your money back, but that is not where the profitable point is. The real profit is coming from the following yearly maintenance, industrial products export and other services, those won't see on the P&L of the infrastructure companies.

For Chinese banks now, the problem is that they got too much money but less profitable investment opportunities. If you see China as a company, this company is making around 500 billions dollars profit. A country with such a huge surplus need to find ways to spend it. A country itself has limitation to absorb these money unless you wants super inflation (actually real estate bulb in Chia is one of the results). Or they can send these money overseas to buy: 1. luxury goods; 2. western companies/technologies; 3. the asset in developing countries. Chinese doesn't want spend too much on luxury goods, the westerners don't want sell their best companies/tech to Chinese either. So, that leave Chinese option 3. But these assets in developing countries won't produce profit without a proper infrastructure. That is why Chinese BRI comes in.

And everyone forgets that the CCP spends more on internal security than on their military ... They are fully prepared for any level of protest.

Why Tanks? Fear

Authoritarian regimes rely heavily on fear of gov to subdue its population. This element of fear keeps population submissive even to their own detriment. This fear gives power to regime to do whatever they desire.

Banks are symbols of a nation's wealth. They are also symbols of confidence of people in gov. If visuals of banks overrun by people in desperation to get their money appears, it will permanently shake people's trust into CCP regime. This will create a snowball effect for future problems. Also CCP's carefully crafted image of China will take a major dent internationally.

The tanks only serve as optics to install fear in citizen's minds that system is overwhelmingly powerful and therefore they must not rebel against the system.

CCP taking extreme measures like parking tanks outside banks shows that they themselves don't have much faith in their population. They are afraid of mass rebellion. All these measures indicates that something isn't right in China.

So any sign that CPC is weak or public over powering state instrument is a threat and can be a catalyst for something larger in future . In india farmers running down Delhi with tractors , removing national flag in lal quilla hurt some sentiment but it does not have bigger consequences . But same thing if happens in China , its a danger for CPC . They have to maintain that all powerful state in imagination of chinese citizens as well as in reality . Their response to covid is also due to this reason .

Agreed . Economic rise of china is the reason for stable rule of CCP . But It has to be sustainable . With such debt problem future might not be so secure .

Every nation has different doctrine and operational procedures for the military
