The A-50 first entered service in the Soviet Union in 1984. It was based on the IL-76 platform and carried a Mechanically steered array. The Chinese tried getting an AESA based A-50 in 2000, which was sanctioned by the US. The Israelis signed the AESA based A-50 with India in 2002 after the China deal failed. The Condor sold to Chile was based on the Boeing 707 while the Indian Phalcon is based on the IL-76. The Russians supplied both India and China with the platform. The Israelis supplied India with the AESA radar while China has tried making one on their own based on whatever they could get from Israel.

The AWACS with China and India look the same, but they are different in capability.

The Indian Phalcon has 3 AESAs in the rotodome. That means, they needn't whirl and will get a 360deg surveillance every 2 seconds.

A50 is different from Phalcon and KJ2000 competely.....A50 is generation behind Phalcon and Kj2000...

Now Phalcon AWACS operate in IL 76 platform right? After Russian AF grounded IL 76 planes, shouldn't IAF be worried about carrying such AWACS in IL 76 platform? Can Phalcon be fitted in C-17 globemaster?
Our platform is refurbished and with new engines. So a mishap like the Russian IL-76 shouldn't happen.

Have IAF started the data integration process of the AWACS with its fighters?
It was started some time back. The datalinks will be ready only in the 2011-12 period. Right now, the fighters can be vectored by AWACS through voice commands.

Well, I just debunked your notion that Phalcon was copied from the KJ-2000. Both KJ-2000 and Phalcon simply share the same platform that's all. The new Eitam will have a different platform and the radar will be an entire generation ahead of the Phalcon. Eitam will be based on the Greenpine. Please don't compare the Phalcon to the KJ-2000. The Chinese officials have themselves said the KJ-2000 is outmatched by the Phalcon in every parameter.

Sir, i beg to differ on you regarding the complete ToT of APG - 79. I am well awar of the present discussion that is going on & US has agreed to provide india with unpreceedented ToT in SH but complete ToT of APG- 79 seems impossible at this moment as USA dosnt seem to have come up with an AWAC which is way better than APG - 79. Even APG 77 , though some what better in crude power generation, it is not substantially better than APG 79 in performance. For most of the mainstay USAF figheter jets of 4.5 gen will continue to have APG 79 as the standered radar for a long time to come.So its unlikely that US will share its frontline tech of such a vital importance with another country.
The Wedgetail is the most advanced AWACS built to date. It is American. The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is among the best too. The APG-79 does not compare to these 2.

Fighter radar is not equal to an AWAC radar. End of story. Stop comparing both of them together. AWACS is a system not only the radar. There are a lot of other things that makes up the AWACS not only the Radar.

AWACS inducted into Pak air force
Pakistan has become the second country in the region after India to have inducted the sophisticated surveillance aircraft, Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) in its Air Force. Pakistan, on Tuesday, received the first of four such AWACS fitted aircraft, Saab-2000 from Sweden, which is likely to boost the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) capability to a great extent, The Daily Times reports. Guys, any update on the status of the data link between these Phalcons and our existing fleet of fighters? Are all the fighters linked or will only the frontline birds like the m2k, M29 and the MKI be linked.

when AFNET is in place it will be fully operational. till then they will go by voice commands probably.

We are not importing any foreign technology for the new Air Force Network (AFNET) but are doing it indigenously. Work is being carried out on an optic fibre technology and simultaneously through satellite," IAF Maintenance Command Air Officer Commanding-in-chief Air Marshal Gautam Nayyar told the news agency in Nagpur.
IAF to switch over to modern communication system, AFNET

added later:

The AWACS, a major force multiplier for the Air Force, is also an important link in the IAF's plans to go network centric by establishing an advanced Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) through the Air Force Net (AFNET) communication network.

Under the AFNET project, the IAF has already linked about 70 per cent of its land-based assets and platforms to the IACCS, the officer said.

3 more are stated to have been signed/or to be signed. no confirmation but.

India and Israel are said to be in advanced negotiations for the purchase of three more Phalcon AWACS, which the IAF proposes to integrate with other air and ground assets. All six AWACS would be linked with the country's first military satellite proposed to be launched by the middle of next year.

in addition india's own AEW&CS aircrafts will be added. numbered to be 20 over a period of time. starting 2011.

India's second AWACS to arrive in March

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics/nation/Indias-second-AWACS-eye-in-the-sky-to-arrive-in-March/articleshow/5455419.cmshttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics/nation/Indias-second-AWACS-eye-in-the-sky-to-arrive-in-March/articleshow/5455419.cms

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force (IAF) will get its second Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), called the eye-in-the-sky, in March
providing a dramatic boost to its capability to see beyond enemy lines and to detect incoming airborne threats.

"The second AWACS will arrive in March. Though a little delayed than the scheduled delivery, it would enhance IAF's capabilities tremendously," a senior IAF official, requesting anonymity, told IANS.

The IAF has purchased three AWACS from Israel to give it a capability beyond conventional ground-based and tethered electromagnetic radars. The first one arrived in May last year.

Like the first one, the cutting-edge technology Phalcon airborne radar is being integrated with the IL-76 heavy-lift aircraft.

"The second AWACS will also be based at Agra air base (home to the IAF's Il-76 and Il-78 transports and mid-air refuellers) only," the official added.

Agra airbase is one of the largest in the country and has immense strategic importance. It already has an extended runway and an avionics lab. The ground exploitation system that will sift through and disseminate the data transmitted by the AWACS is already in place.

With its ability to detect aircraft, cruise missiles and other flying objects at ranges far greater than is possible through existing systems, the AWACS can also collate surface information about troop movements and missile launches even while "listening-in" to highly confidential communications between the enemy's front line units.

To this extent, the second AWACS, as a potent force-multiplier, will significantly enhance the effectiveness of the IAF's offensive and defensive operations. Given the intensity and pace of modern-day air warfare, the AWACS will provide an impregnable aerial umbrella to neutralise any incoming threat.

India is in the select club of nations - the US, Russia, Britain, Japan, Australia and Turkey - that operate such a sophisticated system. Other countries - notably Pakistan, Brazil and Greece - too operate AWACS but at a much lower end of the scale in terms of capability.

The AWACS project is a tripartite contract between India, Israel and Russia. The $1.1 billion deal for the three AWACS was signed in 2004.
