Range : 80Km (max) for 9G manoeuvring target; 100km for not manoeuvring targets
will complement "KS-172"

IAF have KS-172 or it's just wrong reporting as usual ? @p2prada @Austin
While HAL has confirmed its existence only recently, IAF has not. It is referred to as the K-100.

The KS-172 project is cancelled as Russia has decided to go for RVV-BD based on proven R-37 design.( least risk and a decent trade off )

Not sure if they would pursure the KS-172 project as future LRAAM might have better design solutions , For now for MKI RVV-BD is the only LRAAM available.

India is the primary partner here. Unless there were technological obstacles, how will VVS decision affect IAF's project?

VVS may have chosen a R-37 derivative for their long range needs rather than opt for K-100. IAF may go for the K-100 as their long range missile regardless of VVS's decision. There is no guarantee IAF will choose the RVV-BD either. Anyway, I doubt it makes a significant difference. Both are of a similar class of missiles, I think K-100 comes with an extra booster for extended range though.

The Novtar Project K-100 is virtually cancelled it did not go beyond mock up stage as VVS has decided to go ahead with RVV-BD for themself and export keeping time ,cost and risk down for this project.

They are working on new LRAAM beyond RVV-BD for PAK-FA and its being worked by Tactical Missile Bureau but this will come beyond 2016

There is virtually no news from Russian side or Novtar design bureau that they are going ahead with K-100 project , I doubt IAF is go alone and fund that project and likely go with RVV-BD if they feel they need it.

I am not particularly convinced because the K-100 was supposed to be funded by IAF. VVS interests shouldn't have affected the project. Quite like how VVS's opinions on FGFA will be moot considering it is an IAF funded project. VVS shouldn't have any say here.

Missiles for PAKFA/FGFA shouldn't be counted in this discussion.

I think Super 530 on M2000 will be replaced by MICA so Astra MRAAM is just a addition to already hugely diversified Indian missile inventory, Sir .!

Livefist: India's Astra BVRAAM Flight Firing This Year

Aero India 2013 afforded the first view of a full-scale model of India's Astra BVRAAM. In an interview to a newspaper recently, DRDO chief V.K. Saraswat said 2013 was 'Astra Year' for the agency as the missile would finally see flight trials. The missile has already been tested from a ground launcher a few times and had captive trials on a Su-30MKI. The weapon is intended to be integrated on the LCA Tejas, Su-30MKI, upgraded Mirage 2000 and Jaguar.

Indigenous critical component for missiles developed

Radome, one of the most critical components for high speed, target-seeking missiles, has been developed indigenously by Indian scientists, paving the way for saving hundreds of crores of rupees in foreign exchange for future systems.

Saving foreign exchange:

India has been importing these structures, each costing Rs.30-Rs.40 lakh for its missile requirements. This technological achievement would not only help in saving crucial foreign exchange but also give a fillip to the home-grown Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, said a scientist involved in the project.

A radome is positioned at the nose cone of the missile. It is meant to protect and insulate the electronics of the projectile from scorching temperatures and atmospheric disturbances outside as it zooms towards the target at supersonic speeds with the help of a seeker. To enable the seeker to receive signals and track the target, the radome has to be transparent.

Scientists at Research Centre Imarat, a key missile complex laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), have conceived and developed a high-precision Radome Calibration system covering different mechanical and electromagnetic aspects required for the Air Defence interceptor and other missiles.

The missile scientist said the first ceramic radome which can withstand high speeds and temperatures up to 800 deg c has been developed for the Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Astra missile.

Various qualification tests were carried out and it was found to be on par with the imported systems. It was found to withstand high temperatures, vibration shocks and atmospheric disturbances, while supporting the required aerodynamic profile.

Besides, Astra, the indigenously-developed radomes would mainly cater to interceptor missiles. They would also be used in BrahMos, MRSAMs (Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles) and Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARMs).

RCI also started work on developing 'reaction-bonded silicon nitride' radome which can withstand temperatures of above 1,000 deg c.

Agni-V warming up for a canister-style trial launch - The New Indian Express

Giving an update on various ongoing missile projects, Sekaran said that the Astra has completely undergone a design change following issues it had in the past. "We have had good flights, post new-design and also conducted some captive trials. It is in a good shape now and it should gear up for firing from an aircraft soon. The project is definitely out of woods," he said.

Captive Flight Test of ASTRA Missile on Su-30 MKI Aircraft
Issue 73, June 6, 2013, HAL-CONNECT

ASTRA missile integration scheme was sucessfully designed and developed by Design Electrical Department of AURDC, HAL(ND). It was a major modification on Su-30 MKI aircraft carried out by AURDC for enhancing its operational capabilities. This includes electrical integration, avionics integration and also Flight Test Instrumentation (FTI) activities.

Captive Flight Test (CFT) for Astra missile on Su-30 MKI aircraft was planned in three phases. Phase-1, to carry out aero-structural and mechanical integrity for carriage of ASTRAunder steady and maneuvering conditions, phase-2, to carry out validation of weapon control system and its electrical and avionic interfaces with ASTRA missile and in phase-3, to check the performance of missile system in transmitting and receiving mode of missile seeker with
designated target under different flight conditions and the live firing of the ASTRAmissile from Su-30 MKI aircraft. Significant contributions, exceptional professionalism and support provided by the team of HAL Nasik Division for Integration of India's first indigenous (Air-to-Air) ASTRA missile on Su-30 MKI aircraft was appreciated by Project Director ASTRA, Shri. PVenugopal, Sc-G, DRDL, Hyderabad.
