Astra Mark 2 will feature both Rail and Ejector Launch capability : Former Air Marshal Sinha

Air Marshal SBP Sinha (retd), who headed Rafale negotiations from Indian side said, recently made an interesting revelation while speaking to a Defence Journal that the upcoming improved version of the Astra Mark 2 missile is already in development and will have a head-on range of more than 110+ km and also will have ejector launch method which was not seen in Astra Mark 1 program.

Astra Mark 1 uses the rail launched method when launched from mother aircraft towards its target. In the ejector launch method, the weapons system is physically ejected away from the aircraft, ensuring that it is clear of the aerodynamic flow around the aircraft before motor ignition.


Rail launched method is most commonly used the method when air to air missile is fired towards its target but in many high g turns while performing excessive maneuvering there is a tendency for the missile to become jammed in the rail but the development of Ejector Launch capability for upcoming Astra Mark 2 most likely is to do with 5th generation AMCA fighter jet which will have Internal weapons bay and will use an Ejector Launch mechanism for launching air to air missile when in Stealth mode.

While DRDO is tight lipped about its Astra Mark 2 program it is expected to come with a dual pulse rocket motor with a software-defined Active radar seeker to achieve extended range.

With dual pulse motor Astra mk2 will be no less than 160km+ missile. It will match performance of derby ER.

Astra air-to-air missile waits for Integration clearance from IAF on LCA-Tejas



Indian Air Force and DRDO are in talks to clear path for bulk orders for nearly 200 indigenously developed Astra air-to-air missile for the entire Su-30MKI fleet over 50 units which was ordered last year by IAF and produced by Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) as part of pre-production order for testing and evaluation purposes but with priority given to the Su-30 fleet, HAL and ADA are waiting for IAF clearance for integration of the Astra BVR AAM with the LCA-Tejas.



While ADA wants to start integration and developmental trials with the limited series production (LSP) aircraft available with the agency so that it can be enabled for the 40 Mk1 already ordered by IAF, while HAL wants to keep it exclusive with the 83 Mk1A variant which it has been developing for the IAF.


Tussle seems to between ADA and HAL and who will execute integration work since both Mk1 and Mk1A has different Fire Control Radar (FCR) and both variants require software updates to the Mission Computer (MC) and both agencies want to carry out software and integration work which require fresh funds influx from the IAF.



ADA already has called the Mk1A variant has an Internal development project of the HAL which has no role for the agency in its development. Sources close to idrw.org have said that the ball is in IAF’s Court now. IAF will need to take a call if it was to enable Astra BVR AAM with ELTA-MMR FCR in the Mk1 or clear it only for ELTA-2052 FCR to be used on the Mk1A variant developed by the HAL.


Israeli developed Derby beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air missile (AAM) and Russian R-73 Close Combat Missile already have been cleared on Mk1 but IAF plans to use Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile developed by United Kingdom’s MBDA instead of Russian R-73 on Mk1A variant and a decision between Derby and Astra BVR is one IAF will take soon.


BEL official who spoke to idrw.org earlier this year had informed that gradually in phases production of the Astra Missile will be scaled upwards year over year since IAF placed orders only for 50 units last year. with 200 more orders to be placed soon, BEL official had predicted orders for nearly 1000 units for Mig-29, Mirage-2000 and LCA-Tejas fighter fleet shortly.

Yes, but at what cruise speed? Everything I am looking at says it is so slow any fighter that turns at BVR ranges can outrun it.
A more knowledgable writer has described the speed around mach 4.5. I doubt a loaded fighter/bomber can outrun this missile. Potentially, the scientists are underplaying the actual speed/velocity numbers to keep the guessers guessing!

All R-77 and Derby should be replaced with thousands of orders for Astra. This is the single biggest breakthrough that India can use to ween itself off of foreign missile dependence.

200 Astra Mk1 order soon with two different seekers
Five successful test-flights of air-to-air missile Astra from Sept 16-19, over the Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast earlier this year has cleared the path for a bulk order of the missile system with DRDO and along with 50 other public and private organizations which are part of the supply line of the missile system. According to reports coming in and as per information provided to idrw.org. IAF is close to ink a deal for 200 Astra Mk1 long-range air-to-air missiles with a range of 100 km and equipped with modern guidance and navigation techniques for its Sukhoi-30 MKI platform which has seen successful integration and trials in combat mode. IAF already has placed orders 50 units of Astra BVR-AAM to be used for testing, trials, and integration into other fighter aircraft in near future and to also to niggle out production issues at early stages. Astra which was equipped with Russian supplied 9B-1103M Agat active radar seeker borrowed from RVV-AE (R-77) was later replaced by Indian made active radar seeker but according to reports coming in due to production constraints order for 200 Astra BVR-AAMs will be split between Agat and Indian Seeker and IAF is ok with the arrangement since both seekers have been tested successfully onboard Astra in last few years and both have performed exceptionally well in trials. Once production is scaled up, Indian seeker will be used in all future orders of the Astra Missiles with some further improvements in scan and target acquisition range against a 5m² (54ft²) fighter-sized target in a range of over 40km.

How many kills do F-22, Mig-31 or Eurofighter have, and how many f-16s were shot down by mig-21s until this year?
BVR Missiles generally can be classified into 3 parts. Propulsion, seeker and algorithm/codes. I believe Russia is very strong in first area, Both are equal in second and India is ahead in third. If master our own IR seeker and Propulsion such as duel pulse motor and controlled burning of solid fuel as planned in SFDR, I think we can go ahead of atleast R 77 very easily when we incorporate these two technologies. Astra MK 1 in my opinion is ahead of R 77 (old). Astra Mk2 will be much ahead.

I doubt IAF or IN look at missile commonality, while ASRAAM is bound to be a common IR WVR missile, for BVR I think IAF likes to have plenty of seeker types for use in different tactics.

It seems old solid fueled Astra-2 is cancelled. Astra 1 will be followed by Astra Ramjet = Astra SFDR = Astra 2
