Astra performs key manoeuvre

A critical high-g (27 g) manoeuvring capability of the indigenously developed Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missile, Astra, was proved on Wednesday after it was launched from Sukhoi-30 MkI fighter aircraft against a moving simulated target from Chandipur, Odisha on Sunday.

The anti-aircraft missile's high-g manoeuvrability from a lower altitude of one km was one of the critical performance criteria and it was proved in the flight test, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists told The Hindu .

After a smooth separation from the aircraft, the missile went up and dived down to intercept the moving simulated target at an altitude of about two km. The missile's structures, guidance, control and aerodynamics were proved for high-g manoeuvre, the scientists said.

The DRDO scientists have planned to launch Astra against an actual target — Pilotless Target Aircraft (Lakshya) on Thursday.

The smallest of the missiles developed by DRDO, the 3.8-metre long Astra uses solid propellant and can carry a warhead weighing 15 kg. The state-of-the-art missile can intercept and destroy enemy aircraft at supersonic speeds in tail-chase mode and at very long range in head-on mode. The missile possessing high Single-Shot Kill Probability (SSKP) has ECCM (electronic counter-counter measures) features and smokeless propulsion. It can be launched from different altitudes and has the capability to reach up to 110 km when fired from an altitude of 15 km, 44 km when launched from an altitude of eight km and 21 km when fired from sea level.

DRDO scientists also plan to equip the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) with Astra.

and Today's test Astra planned to Kill a PTA Drone
After Akash, Astra missile would be a big hit for DRDO. Expect huge orders this time for Astra. Eagerly waiting for astra mark - 2 to make its first flight.
Just got information of Vijainder Thakur,ex pilot that It meets SQR(Staff qualitiative requirements).Hopefully Astra meets all its requirements to clear IOC.

BALASORE: India Thursday successfully test-fired beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAM) Astra from fighter aircraft Sukhoi. The indigenously built world class missile was flight tested in full operational configuration against a live target propelling its quick induction in the armed forces.

Defence sources said, the missile was launched from Sukhoi 30 MKI aircraft at about 12.30 pm and it successfully hit pilot less target aircraft (PTA) off the Odisha coast. On Wednesday, the missile was fired against a simulated target. The test conducted as part of induction phase trial was aimed at checking the control system and its stability which were validated during the experiment. Once operational, this futuristic weapon will propel India into an elite club of countries such as the US, Russia, France and Israel.

Director of Chandipur based Integrated Test Range (ITR) MVKV Prasad said the missile hit the live target at long range and met all the mission objectives. "The test is successful. The missile has demonstrated its repeatability, robustness and endurance capability," he said. The indigenously developed Astra is designed for an 80-km range in head-on mode and 20 km-range in tail-chase mode. As an anti-aircraft missile it can be fired after receiving a signal from the far away target through its onboard manoeuvres based on radio frequency.

Entirely a complex missile Astra can intercept fast-moving aerial targets at supersonic speeds (Mach 1.2 to 1.4). It has a maximum speed of Mach 4. First tested in 2003, the missile has completed a series of developmental ground trials, captive flight tests and user associate launches from fighter aircraft from different locations and different weather conditions.

The single-stage, smoke-less, solid propelled missile is one of the smallest missiles developed by the DRDO as far as size and weight is concerned. The 3.8 metre-long missile has a diameter of 178 mm with an overall launch weight of 154 kg and can carry about 15 kg of high-explosive warhead, activated by a proximity fuse.

The missile was initially planned to arm Jaguar, Mig-29 and light combat air-craft (LCA) Tejas, but meanwhile DRDO has integrated Astra with Indian Air Force's front line fighter air-crafts like Sukhoi-30 MKI. Fitted with a terminal active radar-seeker and an updated mid-course internal guidance system, the missile can locate and track targets at different altitudes.

"Unique feature of the missile is that it can't be traceable by any enemy radar thus making it successful it destroying the targets. In terms of sheer technology, the Astra is more complex than even the nuclear-capable Agni series of strategic ballistic missiles," said a defence scientist.

The Astra missiles have undergone rigorous testing on Sukhoi in the captive mode for avionics integration and seeker evaluation. Last year the missile with higher range capability was also successfully test fired from the same aircraft from a naval range off Goa coast.

Astra can be fired by all IAF platforms having radars of requisite parameters. This will give a big boost to Su-30, Mig-29, and LCA tejas fleets.

One question - was astra missile guided to the target or did missile itself identified the target to destroy?
My opinion (you may check other sources as well) is that such missiles receive guidance from the firing aircraft until the missile's own radar can lock on to the target aircraft. The small radar of the missile may be able to lock on only from a distance of 20km or so.

Astra is a very critical project for India for two reasons - a. stability of supplies, b. price. Greater availability of BVR missiles will definitely increase the potential of air force.

That is how such missiles work normally. But i am not sure whether target was guided by su-30 till missile took over action or missile glided from su-30 just to track object via its radar and destroyed it? The distance of the target is not given here.

When we make home made system we learn a lot. Not only that, we can play around. Like using third party, either AWAC or another fighters radar to guide it. As we know the frequance and source code it can be done easily in future.

This Missile Is How India Plans to Attain Aerial Supremacy

India successfully tested the Astra, a supersonic air-to-air missile.

Earlier this week, India successfully tested its indigenously developed Astra supersonic air-to-air missile. The Astra, developed by India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), is a Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile capable of being launched from India's Sukhoi-30 MKI twin-jet air superiority fighter.
The Indian Air Force currently operates roughly 200 total Su-30 MKIs, but plans to eventually operate around 270. The Astra is 149 inches in length, making it the most compact missile developed indigenously in India capable of supersonic speeds.

MVKV Prasad, director of the Integrated Test Range in the Indian state of Odisha, noted that the "missile was successfully tested to hit a simulated target" in an interview with the Press Trust of India. The Economic Times notes that the Astra "was tested to prove the maneuvering capability against a simulated target and also to validate various subsystems." When fired from an altitude of at least 15,000 meters, the Astra can travel as far as 110 km. At lower altitudes, this range is reduced: it is capable of reaching a range of 44 km when fired from 8,000 meters, and 21 km when fired from sea level, according to the Economic Times. The active homing ability of the Astra is limited to 25 km. Under normal use, the highly maneuverable Astra missile experiences up to 30 g of acceleration force.

The Astra, which has been under development for over a decade, will be continue to undergo testing until it is ready for reliable use by the Indian Air Force. S Venugopal, a project director at the DRDO, notes that while the "the fourth and fifth air launch of Astra was once again perfect "¦ more tests will follow to prove its repeatability." A longer range Mark 2 version of the Astra is planned which will increase its total range, including its active homing and tail chase ranges.

The Sukhoi-30 MKI, the intended bearer of the Astra, is a crucial asset for the Indian Air Force, particularly for a potential two-front war scenario.
With a range of 1,800 km and high maneuverability, the Su-30 MKI is India's primary aerial superiority and dominance fighter. The Astra, if it performs up to expectations, will give India's MKI fleet considerable offensive power. The following video, from a previous test, showcases the Astra being launched from an Su-30 MKI:
