It's not really a setback. Do any of the local companies have the capacity to produce 72K rifles in a year. Sig did so with the first batch. I however am in favor of dropping the AK-203 for the SSS P-72 family.

Did the army tried P 72 yet ? Let sss defence export it to American market and see how they perform.

However AKs can be built here even OFB are doing good. But it's the production ethics quality control equipment metallurgy etc where we need to learn and gain from the AK 203 deal. Truth is if Sigs will be built here they'll be expensive too.

What I am not sure abt is around 7 lakh AKs for army. If they had gone for 6.8 round perhaps for both carbine and assault might have been better. MCIWS project really need to be revived again with atleast 7.62 *51 mm and 6.8 round . That project can ease the logistics and give army a better deal in long term. Infact Sig can be asked to do that too.
