1) It is not a flaw, it is just design solution. You can have isolated ammunition compartment but this makes vehicle more bulky, heavy, more complicated, etc. etc. etc. Or You can make just a trade off and sacrifice crew survivability to make vehicle cheaper, simpler etc. etc. etc.

2) So what, Italian tank is a good example that being inspired by other design does not mean it will have all design solutions same. Arjun might be inspired by Leopard 2, but is not same, do You still remember side turret armor issues? So if Arjun do not have the same side turret protection as NATO tanks, it might be same thing in case of ammunition storage.
1. Yes, but that is not the case here, As there is clearly a blow up panel above the ammo storage, Also it mentioned in DRDO page..

2. As respect to my point one and other post where i mentioned this before also adding that Arjun have reason for bigger mantal and its deigned as per Army demands, Unlike LEO2 A4, Arjun height is also lower, less visiable..

1) We have only such photos, more, one of photos is taken from Arjun Mk2 video presentation. So what, they started to test Mk2 without such important structural modifications?

2) OPSEC is important, however it is good if OPSEC is done smart, not the stupid way to make everything classified... British were also such super happy when they claimed that nobody, ever see Challenger 2 interior... untill one day, pitty I never saw faces of some of these guys.
1. There are two Prototypes of MK-2, What DRDO did with these is one known to them..

2. If that Gov decides than its Ok till then its a OPSEC..

India is equipping its Arjun tanks with the LAHAT missile produced by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The missile will provide the tank with the ability to hit moving targets from great distances while in motion.

IAI developed and produced the LAHAT – a laser-guided missile that can be launched from a tank's cannon, reaching its target by homing in on a laser spot. The shell-missile weighs approximately 12 kg and has a range of 8 km, including a lethal 2.5 kg warhead.

Arjun Mark II Battle Tank with New Upgrades Undergoes Trials in Rajasthan for Army

Arjun Mark II Battle Tank with New Upgrades Undergoes Trials in Rajasthan for Army
Posted on: June 25, 2012

The state-run Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has started a fresh round of trials for the Arjun Mark II battle tanks with upgrades in the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan. According to DRDO spokesperson Ravi Gupta, the trials will continue for about two months and the focus will be on 19 parameters that will highlight the improvements in the tank. The Arjun MBT Mark-II is to become the mainstay of the Indian Army's armoured fighting units from 2014.

According to DRDO, the follow-on order by the Indian Army of the Arjun Mark II tanks stipulates certain changes that are to be made in the battle tank. While the Indian Army has already accepted 124 tanks, the follow-on order hinges upon 93 improvements to the Arjun Mark II tank including 19 major modifications.

Regarding the major modifications and upgrades on the Arjun tank, these will include missile-firing capability against long-range targets, panoramic sight with night vision to engage targets more effectively, containerization of the ammunition, enhanced main weapon penetration, additional ammunition types, explosive reactive armour and an advanced air-defence gun to engage helicopters.

The Arjun Mark II tank will also witness a hike in the auxiliary power unit providing 8.5 KW instead of the earlier 4.5 KW. The tank will also feature an improved gun barrel; changes in the commander's panoramic sight with eye safe LRF, night vision capability for the driver and digital control harness. The Arjun tank is operated by a four-member crew comprising a commander-cum-navigator, gunner, loader and driver.

In an earlier statement, DRDO chief VK Saraswat had indicated that the new variant (Arjun Mk-II) is likely to achieve 90% indigenous component. The Arjun tank hull and turret has been modified to achieve the target weight of about 55 tons from 59-64 tons. Israeli firm Elbit is helping to enhance its firepower and battlefield survivability and IMI is helping to augment Arjun Mk II's mobility, redesign its turret and hull and improve its production-line processes.

The Indian Army is now operating the 124 Arjun Mark I as part of two regiments in the western sector and has placed an order for an additional 124 tanks, primarily to keep the HVF production line running before the Mark-II version was ready for manufacturing. The Army has been skeptical about the capabilities of the Arjun tanks, but after the first two regiments were pitted against the Russian-built T-90 MBTs in comparative trials in the desert terrain, the Army has been convinced of its potential.

Arjun Mark II MBT will be a world beater : DRDO
Published July 17, 2012 | By admin
SOURCE: Millennium Post

The advanced Mark II version of the indigenously built, Arjun Main Battle Tank [MBT], is undergoing 'development trials' since last month in the presence of representatives of the user agency, the army. 'The current phase of trials is expected to continue till September 2012,' a source in the Defence Research and Development Organisation [DRDO] said.Though the senior levels of the army have decided to hold back their counsel till the end of the trials, the DRDO claims that the army sought 89 changes upon the Mark I model, and all 89 of them have been incorporated in the final version of the Mark II. 'We have done that in record two years,' a source said. The changes include 19 improvements, which are major. For example, the main gun can now launch missiles; the tank commander in Mark I just had a viewer which gave a panoramic view of the battle-field, now night vision capability to the commander's viewer. That means the nigh blindness will no longer be a problem either for the gunner [he had night vision even in Mark I] or the commander. The DRDO source claimed that Mark II will be capable of performing day and night in 'hunt and kill mode'.

Advanced explosive reactive armour [ERA] has been incorporated for additional protection for the tank and its crew. Mine ploughs have also been installed. Added to this, is the remote firing capability with 360 degree coverage for the Air Defence weapon.

Experts say that there are three main elements that constitute the attributes of a MBT: armour, firepower and maneuverability. To attain optimal level in one element is to give in to sub-optimality in another. For example, the German tank Leopold has heavy armour but is not all that maneuverable. The American Abrams is focused on fire-power. The Israeli Merkava IV has fast maneuverability.

The DRDO sources say that all the protection army wanted for survivability, have made the Mark II heavy, but its powerful engine provides it enough maneuverability. Also, a unique feature of the tank is that it can pivot around 360 degrees, while firing its main gun.

The sources however do not want to indulge in any discussion about the specifications of the tank. But they claim, 'It is noteworthy that these 89 changes, make Arjun Mark II among the best tanks in the world in its class.'

just think about with LAHAT missile Arjun will do non line of sight shooting of enemy tanks and other target up to 8 km , which will be pained by others, tanks/UAV/infantry teams and special ops.

some like this in land warfare, watch it after 3.00 frame.

enemy wont know what has hit them...........:cool2:

A third generation semi-active laser homing low-weight anti-tank guided missile developed since 1992 and manufactured by Israel Aerospace IndustriesIt has a range of 8 km when launched from a ground platform, and up to 13 km, when deployed from high elevation. The missile hits the target at an accuracy of 0.7 meter CEP and an angle of over 30 degrees, providing effective penetration of up to 800 mm of armor steel with its tandem warhead to deal with add-on reactive armor. LAHAT might also carry embedded active protection system countermeasure capabilities.

well urban survival kit for Arjun is cool. BTW they did commented on the comparative trials. P2P would like to watch it carefully.

Bobby started with trust deficit from history, then going rounds and rounds and finally said that arjun was not asked in numbers because of trust, looks like silly excuses, plus he said in start that he has not commanded any arjun tank.
