cos,a rifled gun will fire a projectile more accurately and with greater range, but at a somewhat lower velocity, because the rifling actually carves grooves into the projectile as it travels down the barrel. The spin imparted to the projectile gives it better aerodynamic properties, but the lower velocity means less energy is delivered to the target by momentum.
As Ace009 said it is not true. In fact if rifled guns are so superior how fans of rifled guns will explain the CAT competition effects when smoothbore gun armed MBT's defeated both Chieftain and Challenger 1 armed with rifled guns? Besides of course that both Chieftain and Challenger 1 had completely obsolete FCS... but hey in Greece Challenger 2 with modern highly accurate FCS was also defeated by MBT's armed with smoothbore guns... how this could happen! Rifled guns are sooo accurate! Well we know currently that this is not true and the future brightly smiles only to smoothbore guns only (if we talk about MBT armament). ;)

Oh BTW, the current APFSDS in Arjun gun also do not spin, because of complex design of sabot with ball bearings. Same ball bearings would be needed for HEAT, because HEAT do not like spin even more than APFSDS.

Actually smoothbore gun have only advantages over rifled gun. It is easier to manufacture, have longer service life, can fire all types of ammunition without any problems, APFSDS, HEAT, HE, Cannister, Beehive, HEOR, MPAT and other types would not be a problem, just add fins to the round and voila.

Oh, also Israelis are slowly starting to scrapp tanks with rifled guns, Sho't, Magach and Merkava Mk1, many of them are allready standing on old storage posts as scrapp metal, unoperational. There are also plans to scrapp Merkava Mk2 in future, so the tanks fleet will be completely made from Merkava Mk3 and Mk4 armed with smoothbore guns. Well at least these are rumors, how it will end in reality we will see.

You're right.Smoothbore has only advantages over rifled ones.
But I think that the poor performance of L30 was more due to its very low maximum chamber pressure limit of just 6100 Bars which kept them from firing high energy rounds where as much shorter Rheinmetall L44/M256 has 7100 Bar which enabled them to fire high energy rounds.Just a thought.I may be wrong though.I would like to know your views.

Pressure would have more to penetration levels (APFSDS needs high kinetic energy to achieve optimal penetration values over range from 1000m to near 4000m).

It is just a fact, tanks armed with both L11 and L30 120mm rfled guns were beaten by tanks armed with RH-120/M256 L44, RH-120 L55 and CN-120-26 L52 120mm smoothbore guns.

Besides this the Greece trails were a circus, real and complete circus, Americans had problems with ammunition, and in the end they needed to take training or combat ammunition from USAEUR stocks in Germany, British also had problems, even more fucked up than Americans problems, this is because two piece ammunition, they just got different projectiles that were obsolete and they got completely different not intended for these projectiles propelant charges, so British team also needed to wait untill proper ammunition was send to them.

But even after solving all problems, CR2 failed to be superior than other contenders from NATO.

I also had somewhere a fragment of ARMOR Magazine with article about CR2 trails in Saudi Arabia or Kuwait, it was mentioned there that CR2E not immpresed Saudis (or Kuwaitis?) and that M1A2 (armed with 120mm M256 smoothbore gun) performed much better in trails.

Unfortunetly I did not made copy of that and ARMOR magazine internet archieve is currently unavailable.

There must be pictures of this best firing on the move during this exercise. Curiously, the barrel is covered. IN any case this machine looks mean. Indian factories must be able to produce it faster though as the pictures loudly declare that these tanks are not in sufficient numbers.

It is normal way to stow camouflage net, tank can normally fire it's gun with this net on barrel.

Ok, but with net on the barrel You can still fire main gun, search for videos of BAOR Chieftains or Challenger 1's, they were also often stowing cammo nets on barrels.

Yes ! it is is quiet a mean machine, at present with the current set up we can produce 50 Arjuns / year. Arjun MK-II will be a more rugged mean machine.

Come off it!

How much and how long would the DRDO walas flog this Saraswat assembled foreign Mal called Arjun. G@@d men Dam nahin aur ham kissi se kam nahin....

At best this Arjun needs a Dronacharya to be a Guru and not Saraswat !!!

That is long time to come folks before someone appoints Dronacharya as DRDO chief !!

I was looking at HESH capability for Arjun , OFB website says accurate up to 1100 m and capable of engaging target up to 2500 m and capable of defeating 135 mm RHA plate.

Ordnance Factory Board

I was under the impression HESH can accurately engage at up to 4 km with rifled gun.

OFB website is for enemy to underestimate its (OFB) capabilities.

Wonder why they would do only with HESH when other figures for ammo looks quite good , ofcourse the real figure to the last meter will also be classfied for all ammo.

Do we have any videos of Arjun firing HESH round ?

Firing any unguided ammo at ragnes up to 4000m and further is like artillery engagement, You fire, if miss, adjust and fire again.
