Main battle tanks (part 11) Al-Khalid (Pakistan)
July 16, 2011 | Views: 8343 | Print |

On the first day of October, 1988 between the PRC, which was represented by NORINCO and Pakistan, with the representation of Heavy Industries Taxila signed an agreement on the design development and manufacture of a new joint battle tank MBT-2000, according to the instruction - "Type 90-II». The work program was approved by the China Council for the Defence January 16, 1990, and in May of that 1990 was already signed the main contract. In parallel to the tests in China, the tank MBT-2000, a similar test in Pakistan. Production of military vehicles was planned at the plant P-711 companies «Taxila». This factory had already made war machines "Type 59", "Type 69", as well as an upgraded version - "Type 85-IIM».

In the mid 90s, the Pakistani side has taken the decision to purchase a license for the production of MBT-2000 with further modernization. Comprehension of technology and series-built main battle tank, its own name - "Al-Khalid" was produced on the Pakistani military factory «Heavy Industries Taxila» (HIT). Tank "Al Khalid" has minor differences from the MBT-2000. First, it has a hinged dynamic extra protection made in China, which gives the appearance of a specific tank. Additional reactive armor blocks are located on the main front projection turret and hull like a tank, "90-II» with DZ than cheekbones tower, where the shelves are protective "corner" like tanks produced in Ukraine and Russia. Additional blocks of special dynamic protection installed directly on the tower basket. The real battle tank weighed 48 tons. Automated control and fire control made in France is similar to the FCS main tank "Leclerc" and contains a low-level panoramic sight for the commander, combined with the sight for the gunner's thermal imager, the control panel, two-plane stabilizer arms, a set of sensors and a digital ballistic computer. Armament consists of a 125-mm smoothbore gun 2A46 with automatic loader made in Russia, as well as a 7.62-mm coaxial main and 12.7-mm anti-aircraft machine guns additional production in China. Additional systems "Al Khalid" are: navigational aids system launch smoke grenades, NBC protection system with HLF, fast-fighting equipment. There was information that Pakistan are ongoing and well-funded work to develop unique types of armor alloys for further use in tanks "Al Khalid." Set as Ukrainian diesel power unit with identical power to the German "Condor", the Pakistanis maintain the necessary power density and flexibility of the tank at the level of the prototype. Within 10 seconds the tank reaches a speed of 30 km / h Ultimately, this work aft combat vehicle acquired complete similarity with the MTO tanks produced in Ukraine - T-80UD/T-84. In 2000, the Pakistani company «Taxila» announced the completion of pre-production of a limited batch tank "Al Khalid." It was made 15 combat vehicles, which were referred to military units for trial operation.

Main battle tank of Pakistan Army "Al-Khalid" was created as part of a large-scale international project involving Pakistan itself, as well as China and Ukraine. Under the contract, which was signed in 2002, the Kharkov Plant. Malyshev within 3 years must deliver to Pakistan 285 engine-transmission compartment for these combat vehicles worth about $ 100 million. The contract for the supply of 285 units of the above was the second successful transaction between Kiev and Islamabad after the famous contract under which the Kharkov Plant. Malyshev in the period from 1996 to 1999. sent to Pakistan 320 Ukrainian T-80UD in the amount of $ 650 million. Most likely, the delivery of the T-80UD and ultimately played a decisive role in the choice of the Pakistani government of Ukraine as a key partner in the production of their main tank Al Khalid.

The Director General of the plant. Malyshev G.Gritsenko, currently partners are already conducting further negotiations for the modification of previously established transmissions, equipping the tank with new anti-aircraft guns of the unique closed-type complex optoelectronic laser suppression of the "Warta", as well as fire protection systems. Complex "Warta" includes a system of warning of laser irradiation, that is, to signal a induced by a laser beam weapons, and a system of infrared jamming systems, spray and smoke protection.

Further strengthening of cooperation between Ukraine and Pakistan in the field of armored vehicles can also contribute to the "Indian factor." In the late 90's India was armed with his troops about 3300 tanks that without set 320 Ukrainian T-80UD is significantly higher than the Pakistani tank fleet (over 900 units). At the present stage in the Pakistan army has made 120 American tanks M-477 and 280 M-48, 1200 T-59 and T-69 is manufactured in China, and 40 T-85. After signing the contract for India $ 800 million for the purchase of 310 T-90S tanks in Russia, Pakistan will probably try to increase your own answer tank fleet that could eventually bring Ukraine expensive new orders. Obviously, these defense programs Islamabad, will be implemented in the near future.

@Dazzler your pictures from posts no. 888-893 are not shown here.
Turret interior form post #903 is definetly not AK -it's cast steel turret from propably Type 59 or smth.

turret composite (multi layered) armour thickness is somewhere between 650-700mm without ERA, 400-500 at hull. Estimated on my part

As per Collins....

Tank Protection Levels
Collins estimatous can't be taken serious - nubers of huge mistakes made in case Leo-2 and T-xx family takes this sources good only for PC gamblers. And value 650-700 looks to be overestimated in that case.
Do you have andy AK draw?

So it's not (what was quite obvious) taken from Leclerc. It's the same based on Leclerc FCS as PT-91MZ Saavan-15 was based :p

I know bro, Collins has multiple flaws and all is just guess work but this is better than nothing, atleast for a general idea :D

AK FCS is certainly not Savan-15, see the pics, it is little different, i also initially though its S-15 but saw it in Ideas 2008 first hand and its not. Maybe in earlier AK but not in later batches. :)

Actually its 8-10 seconds to reach 30 kms, the engine is Malashev 6-TD-2

o_O why...I don't get it...

Here You have values for Leo-2A4(MB783) and T-72B (V84MS) and T-90 (V92S2):

More or less for Leopard-2A4 from 0 to 32km/h it's takes 6s.

this is the new round, AK autoloader was modified to fit these, i have been saying this for ages since i have seen it. Also, the brochure is NOT photoshoped because it is the one presented to Peruvians when MBT 2000 was tested there.
